5 ROYAL AIR FORCE STRUCTURE Chief of the Air Staff (CAS): Air Chief Marshal Sir Glenn Torpy RAF Strike Command (STC) RAF Personnel & Command (PTC) Location: RAF High Wycombe Location: RAF Innsworth AOC-in-C: Air Marshal Sir Joe French Overview: Strike command includes all the RAF offensive, support and defensive aircraft and systems. Organised into 3 groups, numbered 1 through 3. No 1 Group (AOC: AVM David Walker) An air combat group containing all fast-jet assets including Joint Force Harrier (JFH) and the Joint Force Air Component HQ (JFAC). AOC-in-C: Air Marshal Barry Thornton Overview: RAFPTC embraces all aspects of training, career management, welfare, conditions of service, resettlement and pensions for RAF regular and reserve forces world-wide RAFPTC establishments include RAFC Cranwell where Officer is carried out and where HQAC is based. Basic recruit training takes place at RAF Halton. Stations: Coltishall, Coningsby, Leeming, Leuchars, Lossiemouth, Cottesmore, Wittering, Mount Pleasant and Marham Aircraft: Tornado GR4/F3, Harrier GR7/T4/T8, Sea Harrier F/A2, Jaguar GR1/GR3/T4 and Hawk No 2 Group (AOC: AVM Nigel Maddox) Combat support group with all air-to-air refuelling, air transport and force protection assets, as well as the Air Combat Service Support Units (ACSSUs). Stations: Brize Norton, Lyneham, Northolt, and Mount Pleasant. Aircraft: VC10 C1K/K2-K4, Tristar KC1/K1/C2, Hercules, Bae 125, Bae 146, Squirrel HCC1 and C17 (4 aircraft, leased from Boeing). No 3 Group (AOC: AVM Andrew White) Contains all information, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) functions, the air surveillance and control system (ASACS) and search and rescue (SAR). In addition, No. 3 Group will be responsible for JHC co-ordination. Stations: Waddington, Kinloss, Marham, Coltishall and various SAR Units. Flying Stations of RAFPTC include: Barkston Heath, Church Fenton, Cosford, Cranwell, Lintonon-Ouse, St Athan, Shawbury, Valley and Woodvale. Aircraft of RAFPTC include: Mk II Firefly, Tutor T1, Tucano T1, Jetstream T1, Hawk T1 and Griffin HT1 RAFPTC also oversees the Red Arrows, based at either Church Fenton or Akrotiri. Flying: Tornado GR4A, Jaguar GR3, Jaguar T4, Canberra PR9, Nimrod MR2, Nimrod R1, Sea King HAR3 and Sentry AEW1 NOTES: 1. JHC - RAF helicopter squadrons are administrated as part of the Tri-Service Joint Helicopter Command (JHC). 2. ASTOR - The Sentinel R1, carrying the ASTOR (airborne stand-off radar) equipment entered service in late 2005 and will operate from 5 Squadron at Waddington. The squadron is expected to reach full operational capacity in Future Aircraft Developments By April 2007, JFH will be comprised solely of Harrier GR9. The Nimrod MRA4 project has a revised in-service date of 2010, with the first tests on the third (of six) phases of the aircraft completed in August The A400M Future Large Aircraft which has a 50% larger payload than the Hercules C130K is expected to enter service by A total of 25 aircraft will be delivered to the RAF under this contract. The Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft is planned to replace air-to-air refuelling and some elements of air transport capability currently provided by VC10 and Tristar. The projected in-service date is between 2008 and JCA (Joint Combat Aircraft, Lockheed Martin F35) contract was placed in 2005 with the UK to achieve Initial Operational Capability by 2014.
