Letter From The Leadership Dear Friends and Supporters of the Air Force Association, We are pleased to present to you the Air Force Association s 2012 Annual Report. This past year has seen many changes for AFA, having changed leadership at AFA National and on the Executive Board. Many key players who have helped push this Association forward retired, but in place we have a great new team, dedicated to upholding the AFA mission, bringing a wealth of knowledge, expertise, and passion. Many outside elements have pressed this Association, chiefly the looming debt crisis of our nation. Throughout 2012, and into 2013 too, the Air Force Association has stepped up many ongoing initiatives to help fill a gap and voice the budgetary concerns on behalf of the US Air Force. Being the force behind the Force, we have dedicated energy and time to facilitating open dialogue on the challenges that will face our airmen and their families and national security if things continue as is. George K. Muellner Chairman of the Board From our annual national conferences to our monthly Air Force Breakfast Series Program, we have brought together senior Air Force leadership, industry professionals, aerospace experts, and media to discuss the most pressing issues of our time. Our regular congressional and community outreach efforts have given AFA a stronger voice and presence as well. But the national debt crisis isn t the only issue we ve been working to overcome. Since 2009, there has been a strong nationwide effort to help move American students to the top of the pack in science and math achievement. AFA s CyberPatriot The National High School Cyber Defense Competition answers that call. CyberPatriot continued to expand, with more than 1,200 teams registering to compete in the season. Also, in 2012, CyberPatriot continued to gain a great amount of support and new sponsorships from major industry players who want to help create a pipeline of qualified cyber professionals for the future workforce. Craig R. McKinley President Throughout the Association, we ve seen some great successes. The philanthropic results for 2012 were better than anticipated, having seen overall individual giving revenue for AFA and the Air Force Memorial (AFM) in 2012 increase by 16%. Such achievements will serve as a foundation for our aggressive goals of Also, AFA s Wounded Airman Program, established only in 2011, was the beneficiary of the proceeds from the 2012 Cycling Classic, receiving a check for $20,000 raised through pledges made by those participating to help support AFA s program. In 2013, we will see many new field initiatives take form. By the end of 2012, AFA s Field Representatives kicked off the Year of the Community Partner: Supporting Those Who Support You campaign, which will focus on providing support for the men and women who defend this nation. We ve also begun our new focus on the people aspect of the AFA mission highlighting our airmen and their families. Just to give you a sneak peak, such initiatives will include a Transition Program for Airmen leaving the service and an expanded Spouses Scholarship Program, among others. And we continue to embrace social media outlets, such as Facebook and Twitter, so we can stay connected with members, fans, and friends, and continue to build relationships, stay current on public opinion, and get information out more quickly. We began in late 2012 working to transition the AFA National staff to more effectively support the field. Among changes that took effect on Jan. 1, 2013, we added Paula Roy to lead our new Airmen & Family Programs, and retired CMSgt. Barb Taylor to serve as AFMF Managing Director. We also created three new Vice President positions, filled by Larry Dilworth (Development & Marketing), Kari Hahn (Member & Fiield Relations), and Adam Hebert (Education & Communication). This upcoming year will host a major transition in the Air Force. Critical times lie ahead as our Air Force and industry partners must weather our nation s economic challenges and reshape to meet the new priorities set out by the current administration. But AFA will be right there, continuing to provide support. Without a doubt, we attribute the successes of this Association to our volunteers, members, supporters, and staff. As we carry on into 2013, we hope we can continue to work together to expand efforts and initiatives to EDUCATE the public on the critical need for unmatched aerospace power and a technically superior workforce to ensure US national security; ADVOCATE for aerospace power and STEM education; and SUPPORT the Total Air Force family and aerospace education. With your support, so much is possible. Sincerely, George K. Muellner Chairman of the Board Craig R. McKinley President 3

accomplishments The Daily Report brings airpower professionals up-to-the minute news either by weekday blasts or online at Air Force Magazine and Air Force Magazine Online Each month, all AFA members receive Air Force Magazine, the journal of the Air Force Association and flagship publication of the AFA publications enterprise. The Magazine has a long and proud history, having been in existence since 1918 before there was either an Air Force or an Air Force Association. Over the decades, Air Force Magazine has evolved into one of the world s foremost defense publications. It bears no resemblance to the small, parochial, inward-looking house organs so typical of most associations. It maintains the highest standards of quality, accuracy, and integrity while covering a broad range of military, foreign, and intelligence issues. Though it exists to serve the AFA membership, Air Force Magazine is also a significant voice to the wider world: read, respected, and frequently cited by members of Congress, defense officials, and other media. The excellence of our Magazine is of premier importance to the Association. It provides AFA members with the facts, figures, and straight analysis needed to stay abreast of major Air Force, airpower, and defense issues. The Magazine, with in-depth articles of a historical nature, also fosters appreciation for airpower heritage and lore. Air Force Magazine s online Daily Report (DR) allows for comprehensive coverage of breaking news. This electronic news source is now considered a must-read by those who need to know about the Air Force, airpower, and national security. Many defense officials begin their day with the Daily Report and have commented that it s the single best source for news about the Air Force. magazine.com. Additionally, the Magazine website also offers useful graphics, testimony, and in-depth pieces. Subscribers to the DR blast increased by 4,500 from 2010 to 2012, while visitors to the Magazine website increased by approximately 20 percent over the same timeframe. The staff of Air Force Magazine also produces the annual USAF Almanac and a wide variety of special publications such as conference programs and Mitchell Institute reports. The USAF Almanac, published each May, is a heavyweight compendium of facts and figures about Air Force people, equipment, budgets, bases, organizations, leaders, heroes, and much more. This invaluable reference tool is referred to throughout the year, and the Air Force orders hundreds of extra copies for airmen to use as a basic desk reference. One testament to the quality work of the Air Force Magazine staff is the large number of reprint requests we receive. Every year, we receive dozens of official requests to reprint Air Force Magazine articles from organizations such as the Air War College, the Joint Unmanned Aircraft Systems Center of Excellence, the Naval War College, NATO Special Operations School, the Spaatz Center, Squadron Officer College, and the US Army Command and General Staff College. These official reprint requests do not include the numerous and uncountable number of times our work has been cited, linked-to, or referenced by the other news organizations and blogs that draw from our work. Sometimes we are credited as a source of information, but often we are not. Whether the subject is operations, programs, policies, history, or heroism, Air Force Magazine is the trusted and valued authority. 4

Accomplishments EDUCATE Mitchell Institute for Airpower Studies AFA founded the General Billy Mitchell Institute for Airpower Studies in 2008 to honor the leadership of Brig. Gen. William Mitchell through timely and high-quality research, writing, and speaking on airpower and its role in the security of the nation. In 2012, the Mitchell Institute focused primarily on expanding its influence as a venue for discussion of airpower and defense issues, hosting three times the number of Mitchell Hours as in the previous year. Going forward in 2013, AFA plans to build on that momentum, re-energizing the Mitchell Institute. The Mitchell Hour 2012 presentations included: Layering ISR Forces presented by Michael W. Isherwood, a retired USAF colonel and fighter pilot who serves as a senior analyst with the Northrop Grumman Analysis Center. Outside-In presented by Mark Gunzinger of the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, who discussed his new report Outside-In: Operating from Range to Defeat Iran s Anti-Access and Area-Denial Threats. Strategy in a Year of Fiscal Uncertainty presented by Todd Harrison of CSBA, who discussed the disparity between the new defense strategy and the defense budget. 8 Accomplishments educate Conferences/Symposia, Technology Expositions, afa Breakfast Series, and Other Events AFA s conferences and symposia maintained good attendance in 2012, and, even with the questionable state of the economy and defense budget cuts, our technology exposition exhibit sales showed a slight growth over the previous year. Conference sponsorships remained strong in These events and others sponsored by AFA offer valuable professional development opportunities for the Total Force and help educate the public on airpower issues. And, now we waive fees for all uniformed military personnel and DOD civilian employees. Air Warfare Symposium and Technology Exposition AFA s 28th annual Air Warfare Symposium and Technology Exposition held at the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel in Orlando, Fla., attracted more than 1,600 participants. The larger venue has enabled AFA to continue to expand the technology exposition. In 2012, the square footage of the exposition floor space increased by approximately 12.8% over 2011 and the average booth size increased by 57 square feet or almost 13%. And, total sponsorships in 2012 were slightly higher than in CyberFutures Conference and Technology Exposition In 2012, AFA held its 2nd annual CyberFutures Conference and Technology Exposition at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Md. This relatively new conference provides a venue for open dialogue on the cyber challenges facing the nation, bringing together DOD leadership, industry experts, academicians, and current cybersecurity specialists. The event attracted a modest number of attendees and exhibitors. Air & Space Conference and Technology Exposition AFA s three-day Air & Space Conference and Technology Exposition at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Md., attracted more than 6,700 participants, which equates to an almost 21% increase over 2011 despite new DOD restrictions pertaining to conference participation by members of the government and the military. It featured more than 115 individual speakers in 65 workshops, panels, and addresses. The technology exposition s overall occupied square footage grew by 1.9% over 2011 despite a decrease in the number of exhibiting organizations. The 113 exhibitors had an average booth size of 435 square feet, which is a 52 square foot increase over the previous year. Industry sponsorships were down from 2011 due to the elimination of the program that sponsored ACSC participation at Air & Space Conference. AFA continues to network with industry partners, working with each company individually to determine where each finds value as a means to sustain and expand this program. 6

Accomplishments educate Global Warfare Symposium The AFA Global Warfare Symposium held in Los Angeles at the Hyatt Century Plaza in 2012 attracted 760 participants, which is just 16 participants short of our 2011 participation. The larger venue was well received by our attendees, and plans to include breakout sessions and more speakers continue. Corporate Membership Program The AFA Corporate Membership Program was launched on Jan. 1, Now in its third year, the program had 95 Corporate Member companies in Among the benefits to each company are 50 full individual memberships and a listing in AFA s online Corporate Member Directory. The program provides a variety of opportunities for industry to put its products and programs in front of decision-makers at every level and provides industry employees with opportunities to pursue professional education, networking, and to meet potential new customers. AFA Air Force Breakfast Series In October 2009, AFA began hosting Air Force Breakfast programs, which are held 10 times each year in Arlington, Va., with speakers provided by the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force. These events consistently attract leaders of aerospace industry and defenseaerospace media representatives. Other AFA Events AFA continues to sponsor an annual Air Attaché Reception, enabling USAF and corporate officials to converse with members of the foreign attaché community in an informal setting. Another enterprising venue the AFA Chalet at the Joint Services Open House at JB Andrews, Md. continues to attract an increasing number of Air Force officials, AFA industry partners, and foreign attachés and other members of their embassies. 7

Accomplishments educate cyberpatriot The National high school Cyber Defense Competition AFA s CyberPatriot (CP) program enjoyed another year of impressive growth. The number of teams registered and students we reached increased by an outstanding 21 percent from CyberPatriot IV to CyberPatriot V, and the program once again registered teams in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and US Department of Defense Schools in Europe and the Pacific. Since its inception in 2009, the program has grown from eight teams to 1,226. Growth of this national program continues to be driven in large part by the energetic efforts of AFA Chapters whose members reach out into their local communities and schools explaining how AFA s flagship science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) program can help draw more students to STEM education and careers. Television and radio interviews, along with other earned media coverage, were used by our membership to effectively communicate the CP value proposition to local communities, school districts, and high schools. The program for the first time welcomed to its All Service Division the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC). USN- SCC is chartered through organization and cooperation with the Department of the Navy, to encourage and aid American youth to develop, train them in seagoing skills, and to teach them patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and kindred virtues. More than 20 USNSCC teams registered in this first USNSCC year of participation, and through a memorandum of agreement with AFA, at least two of those teams (as with all All Service Division categories) are assured of presence at the CP-V National Finals Competition in March CP s Center of Excellence (COE) program grew as well this past year. The COE program was implemented to recognize non-commercial entities (municipalities, school districts, higher education institutions, etc.) that demonstrate sustained commitment to the CP program, recruit large numbers of teams to the competition, and bring coordinated community involvement to our efforts. The Los Angeles Unified School District continued as a COE and was joined this year by the City of San Antonio and Spokane Public Schools as the second and third entities to earn the designation. As of this writing a fourth COE has been approved for award plans target COEs to receive increased visibility in CP, to serve as a launch point for new CP initiatives, and to receive new technology in partnership with our sponsors. CP continued to benefit from the generous donation of sponsor SAIC s CyberNEXS cyber training platform and technical support. For the first time in 2012, however, CyberNEXS was supplemented in CP s on-line rounds of competition by the newly developed and wholly AFA-owned CyberPatriot Competition System (CCS) which was produced under contract by our partner, the Center for Infrastructure AFA s new Chairman of the Board George Muellner accepts a check for $1 million from Northrop Grumman Foundation President Sandra Evers-Manly as Diane Miller of Northrop and Bernie Skoch, AFA s CyberPatriot Commissioner, look on. Assurance and Security at the University of Texas at San Antonio. CCS will allow AFA to exercise complete configuration control over CP competition, will enable improved feedback and learning for CP teams, and will accommodate the continuing growth projected for CP. CP presence in Canada continued to grow in An expanded relationship with Manitoba schools is stimulating that growth, as Canadian teams are seeing the value CP is bringing to their colleagues in the US. In 2012, provisions were made to expand local and state recognition of CP teams and will serve as the basis for future regionalization of the competition. AFA Region, State, and Chapter Presidents will, at the conclusion of the CP-V National Finals Competition, be provided with certificates for presentation to leading state and local teams in their areas. This will increase local membership involvement in recognizing teams and is being done to increase CP and AFA visibility in local areas. The CP-IV National Finals Competition was an enormous success. Alamo Academies of San Antonio (in the Open Division) and the Colorado Springs Cadet Civil Air Patrol Squadron (in the All Service Division) were crowned National Champions. Our generous Presenting Sponsor, Northrop Grumman Foundation, again awarded at the National Finals Competition $54,000 in educational grants to winning 8 For information on CyberPatriot, visit or contact: Laine Martens: l.martens@uscyberpatriot.org or call

Accomplishments educate team members. Each member of the first, second, and third place teams in both Divisions received grants of $2,000, $1,500, and $1,000 respectively. Planning for the CP-V National Finals Competition expanded in CP-IV s network security event will continue and, in addition, two major expansions to the National Finals Competition were developed in First, in conjunction with Founding Partner SAIC, a digital forensics element will be added to the competition. Additionally, with the generous support of our sponsor Cisco, plans for adding a hardware element were completed as well. Competitors will learn how to configure Cisco network equipment and will be scored in the competition on how quickly and accurately they do so. Many educators and communities have asked that AFA expand the CP program to middle school students so that the STEM education challenge can be faced earlier and likely with even greater success. Accordingly, in 2012 AFA s CyberPatriot Program Office began planning for the introduction of a CyberPatriot middle school program. Plans call for a pilot program to be launched in 2013 to focus on teaching middle school students cyber safety, cyber ethics, and the fundamentals of cyber security. It will rely heavily on AFA volunteers in their communities to support the program. During the year, the National Association of Secondary School Principals again placed CyberPatriot on the NASSP National Advisory List of Student Contests and Activities for The designation provided a major endorsement of the program s strong relevance as an accredited national high school contest. As of this writing indications are that CP will receive a repeat listing for CP-VI in the coming year. The Northrop Grumman Foundation has announced it is renewing its generous Presenting Sponsorship of CyberPatriot. A new three-year sponsorship agreement will sustain our excellent partnership in improving STEM education in America. In 2012, Northrop Grumman Foundation made public the specific level of its commitment to AFA s CyberPatriot: $1,000,000 in that year alone. The new agreement significantly builds on that and assures stability and growth of the program in future years. Then AFA Chairman of the Board Sandy Schlitt stands with jubilant cadets of the Colorado Springs Cadet Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol after they were crowned National Champions in the All Service Division of the CyberPatriot IV National Finals Competition. Alamo Academies students celebrate after being declared National Champions in the Open Division of the CyberPatriot IV National Finals Competition. 9

Accomplishments ADvocate Air Force Memorial Foundation About the Foundation The Air Force Memorial Foundation (AFMF) provides the daily Air Force Memorial (AFM) management oversight and direct event planning and support that helps ensure the AFM becomes and remains a national place of reverence, remembrance, celebration, and pride for its hundreds of thousands of yearly visitors. Inherent and critical to this mission is preserving the heritage of America s Airmen. The AFMF was formed in 1992 as a tax exempt, charitable, historical, and educational organization. (It is incorporated in the District of Columbia and has been granted a 501(c)(3) status by the IRS and contributions are 100% tax deductible.) It was created to build a national memorial to commemorate the contributions, sacrifices, courage, and heroism of America s Airmen and the technological achievements that have made American airpower the most formidable in the world. The Memorial was dedicated in October 2006 to the millions of patriotic men and women who have distinguished themselves in the service of their country in the US Air Force and its heritage organizations. In April 2007 the AFMF officially became affiliated with and fully part of the Air Force Association. AFA formally signed an agreement to provide oversight governance and a day-to-day operational presence at the Memorial. This day-to-day presence is provided by the two staff members of the AFMF Events at the Air Force Memorial Promotion Ceremonies 25 Retirement Ceremonies 17 Enlistment/Re-enlistment Ceremonies 8 Band Concerts 11 Tours & Special Events (not all listed here) 101 Honor Flight Veterans Tours (48) CSAF Arrival in honor of Commander Israeli Air Force 64th FIS Wreath-laying Ceremony 446th Bomb Group Association Wreath-laying Ceremony 11th Bombardment Group H Association Wreath-laying Ceremony German Air Force Group Tour Air Force Academy Society of Washington Wreath-laying Ceremony 73rd Bomb Wing Wreath-laying Ceremony Riley Elementary Wreath-laying Ceremony University of Maryland AFROTC Commissioning Ceremony AFA/AFSA Memorial Day Wreath-laying Ceremony 309th Fighter Squadron Wreath-laying Ceremony Colombian Air Force Academy Wreath-laying Ceremony AFSA/AFA National POW/MIA Recognition Day Ceremony 307th Bomb Group Association Wreath-laying Ceremony 49th Fighter Squadron Association Wreath-laying Ceremony 42nd TRS Wreath-laying Ceremony AFA/AFSA Veterans Day Wreath-laying Ceremony Memorial Sixth Year Visitors Approximately 263,000 people visited the Memorial in Worth highlighting are the nearly 7,500 people attending the USAF Band s summertime concerts, and the almost 14,000 Independence Day visitors that enjoyed the incredible panoramic view of our nation s capital and fireworks. New AFM Managing Director Retired CMSgt. Barb Taylor (seen conducting The USAF Band at the Memorial) has replaced Pete Lindquist as Managing Director of the Air Force Memorial. Taylor retired from the Air Force last fall after 30 years in the military 26 in USAF and four in USMC. She spent the last 15 years as a member of The USAF Band, stationed at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, D.C., where she held various administrative and leadership positions within the band. She has bachelor s and master s degrees in music. She resides in Maryland with her husband, Joseph, and their two children daughter Jordan, a junior at East Tennessee State University, and son Gabriel, a high school senior. Pete Lindquist Retires Pete Lindquist, who was, for some 16 years, a key manager in the building and operation of the Air Force Memorial, retired in December After his September 1996 retirement from the Air Force, he served as the Air Force Memorial Foundation Vice President of Operations and then as AFM Managing Director. Former AFMF President Charles D. Link recalled his work with Pete as one of his most productive mutual relationships and noted that Pete s unflagging dedication to our mission and dogged determination to prevail were essential to the Memorial s eventual success. Link s successor as AFMF President, Edward F. Grillo, agreed, observing, too, that Pete was the stalwart person in place, the corporate memory for the Memorial project, and the go to guy for all the rest of us that were there for a far shorter time. 12

AFA Veteran Benefits Association Accomplishments support AIR FORCE ASSOCIATION The AFA Veteran Benefits Association (AFAVBA) is an AFA affiliate. 18 Accomplishments support Wounded Airman Program AFA started its Wounded Airman Program in 2011, working closely with chapters around the country. The program supports those wounded in action who are now returning to this country and facing challenges as they reintegrate back home. Many of these courageous men and women return to active duty with USAF. Others return home and work to get on with the next phase of their lives. MSgt. Christopher Aggie Aguilera, 66th Rescue Squadron aerial gunner, was one of two survivors from a HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter crash in southwest Afghanistan that killed five airmen on June 9, Aggie has returned to active duty and is discovering a new normal for his life as he adapts to his injuries. One thing he has found is that sports are still very important to him. He wanted to participate in the Warrior Games, an annual event hosted by the US Paralympics Committee to introduce active duty or veteran combat wounded warriors to sporting programs, but he needed a wheelchair specifically outfitted for the rigors of sports. He also wanted one suitable for everyday use. Thanks to the generosity of DRS Technologies and two AFA chapters in the DC area the Nation s Capital Chapter and the Donald W. Steele Sr. Memorial Chapter Aggie received a new sports wheelchair last April. This gift made it possible for him to become a member of the 2012 Air Force Team for the Warrior Games. In 2012, AFA s Wounded Airman Program was the beneficiary of the Air Force Cycling Classic that concluded at the Air Force Memorial. The event raised more than $25,000 in AFA thanks its members, donors, and chapter leaders who helped get the Wounded Airmen Program off to a strong start. 26 MEMBERSHIP and field activities AFA Field Report The Air Force Association is made up of a grassroots network of more than 200 local chapters, 38 state organizations and 14 regional organizations. AFA members work together through chapters to carry out the goals of the association as determined by our elected Board of Directors. Chapters and their volunteer leaders are integral in implementing AFA s mission. Chapters conduct meetings, seminars, legislative visits, aerospace education projects, and much more to focus attention on the Air Force and to support AFA s objectives. AFA Field Leaders are dedicated to supporting the United States Air Force through educating the public on the necessity for a strong national defense, advocating Air Force airpower, and supporting STEM education. While all chapters work to advance the objectives of the Air Force Association, they vary their methods based on their local community. For example, the D.W. Steele Sr. Memorial Chapter in Virginia advocates AFA s mission to the large number of Department of Defense employees in their area. Their proximity to the Pentagon creates a unique dynamic on which this chapter capitalizes through numerous events, including their many Salutes to Air Force units. AFA chapters not only support current Air Force personnel, but also create excitement and opportunity amongst current K-12 students to pursue careers in aerospace technology. Chapters provide funding for many educational events and projects in their area schools. The Northern Shenandoah Chapter worked with DOD and their Congressional Representative to approve a DOD Starbase program in their area aimed at elementary and middle school youth. The program uses hands-on demonstrations and activities to teach kids math and science principles and to expose them to how these concepts are used daily in many DOD occupations. The Starbase program includes a one-week, 25-hour course in science, math, and technology for fifth- and sixth-graders. AFA s chapter system extends outside the United States as well. The Dolomiti Chapter, located in northern Italy, was recently reinvigorated under new leadership and serves Aviano Air Base and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University s overseas campus. Chapter members work tirelessly and volunteer their time to support the Air Force personnel, missions, and organizations in northern Italy. They reach out to airmen and their families by welcoming newcomers to the base with information about life at Aviano Air Base. The chapter also plays an integral role in events that help others outside the region. Dolomiti Chapter President TSgt. Joshua Roberts organized a 5K run at the base to raise funds in response to the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. All the proceeds from the event went to the United Way of Western Connecticut Sandy Hook Support Fund. Under Roberts leadership, the base raised more than $5,000 and attracted 317 participants to the event. AFA Field Leaders also come together as the official governing body of the association. 27 Membership and field activities The Field is the heart, soul, and conscience of this association. Jimmy Doolittle actions between National Conventions. In addition to being the primary forum for official AFA business, the National Convention offers exciting opportunities for members and guests to come together for networking, additional training, Congressional engagement, and social activities. AFA Field Leaders also come together for various training sessions for Region and State Presidents throughout the year, creating an open dialogue among members, chapters, and AFA National to work together to advance the AFA mission. This past September, various chapters were recognized at our National Convention held at the Gaylord National at National Harbor, Md. Some of our most recent winners include AFA Unit of the Year Hurlburt Chapter from Hurlburt Field, Fla., led by President Fred Gross; Outstanding State Organization Florida State led by President Mike Emig; and other various outstanding chapters and exceptional individuals. 28 AFA Field Report Continued so that they may advocate for our airmen. AFA Field Leaders and volunteers sacrifice their time and efforts, and without their dedication and hard work, we would not be the great organization that we are today. Jimmy Doolittle put it best when he said, The Field is the heart, soul and conscience of this association. Chapter Matching Grants This year, AFA awarded more than $9,000 in Chapter Matching Grants to various chapters throughout the field. This grant program allows chapters to submit proposals for activities that promote Aerospace Education in their communities. AFA National matches the amount of money that the Chapter is contributing to the project up to $1,000. Through this program, some chapters have supported schools with funds for new technology and equipment. For instance, the Danville Chapter in Virginia provided much-needed Physical Science Equipment Sets to eighth grade students at Galileo Magnet High School in Danville, Va. The chapter also used funds from a matching grant to purchase materials for biology students at Galileo. The students were able to study protein analysis and purification in their biotechnology unit. Using the new equipment students explored how protein biochemistry is applied when treating diseases. They simulated exposure to a disease and tested treatments on patients within their classroom. Chapter Matching Grants also provided funds for work outside the classroom. AFA provided $1,000 in funds to aid members of the Tidewater Chapter of Virginia in their restoration of an F-111 cockpit. The cockpit was missing a few instruments and was in need of a new paint job. The cockpit was restored and placed in a trailer for use by Civil Air Patrol units and Air Force ROTC units in the area. The Montgomery Chapter in Alabama used a matching grant to fund an Aerospace Education Workshop for Educators in their area. The educators, including CAP Aerospace Education Officers, college instructors, and other leaders in STEM subjects, traveled to Edwards AFB, Calif., for a VIP summer field trip that included activities, tours, and speakers. 31 Thunderbird Society Often referred to as the best in the air, the United States Air Force Thunderbirds are respected and revered by many. It is because of this reputation and honor that the Air Force Association named the planned giving society the THUNDERBIRD SOCIETY. This was established in 2005 to recognize those individuals who invest in the future of the Air Force Association through a living legacy of commitment. These friends have made provisions for planned gifts which include life income arrangements, bequests and provisions in their wills or trusts, or life insurance policies in which the Association is a beneficiary. 52 AFA Charter Members In July 1946 when Air Force Magazine stepped into civvies as Jimmy Doolittle phrased the transition of the magazine from the Army Air Forces to the official journal of the Air Force Association the magazine ran an open letter to all Air Force members, inviting them to join the rolls of AFA Charter Members. Doolittle s letter set an Aug. 1, 1946, deadline for airmen and airwomen to join with thousands already in the Air Force Association to keep the AAF gang, storehouse of our country s aviation knowledge, together.
