2 SMI gives back to the community Entities like the Salvation Army are constantly supporting the community all across this fine country of ours. Whether it s families that are put out of their homes due to fires, to assisting the indigent and homeless, this organization and its members provide more than food and shelter; they provide a ray of hope. At SMI, we feel very fortunate to have developed a relationship with them. We recently participated with making food donations to the Broward location. Although it was a small donation to the scale of the needs in South Florida, the Salvation Army knows that we will be long term partners and will continue to share and participate in every way we can. SECURITY TID-BITS Passwords of all kinds need to be protected. Not only for your computer at work or account, but your bank code, PIN number on phone calls or anything that requires a password. Don t be ashamed to cover your hand with your wallet or free hand while punching in a code, and hunching in towards the bank machine to block unwanted eyes. This is a good thing. Carrying a personal defense tool, like pepper spray, can buy you some time to escape in sticky situations; however, a better alternative is to learn one of the many martial arts of self-defense. Judo, jujitsu or aikido, for example, can be incredibly empowering to the individual, and they give you confidence in your daily life while allowing you to defend yourself when the need arises. If you have any diagnosed medical conditions or allergies, it can be virtually a requirement to have at a minimum a medical bracelet that identifies those concerns, as the bracelet will speak for you when you are unable to speak for yourself. People who live with a medical condition that affects their mobility should consider an emergency response system for their home. An unfortunate truth is that most accidents happen in the home, so be prepared to allow a way to call for help.

4 Page 4 UPS-UNITED WAY FUNDRAISER On September 8th, 2014 UPS teamed up with United Way for the second annual Pulling for-u Plane-Pull fundraising event in Miami, Florida. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors such as UPS and the participants this event raised over $100,000 for the United Way Calgary. The fundraiser consisted of a tug-a-war between thirty-seven teams, which are made up of fifteen Participants each, and a plane weighing an impressive eighty-six tons. Our Operations Manager, Lazaro Millares, and Marketing Specialist Jesenia Manzo-Marquez celebrated their birthday among the SMI family in August, followed by the Branch Manager s birthday, Valentin Emeric, in September. In this seminar we covered Disciplinary Actions, Terminations, Documenting Employee Complaints, Sexual Harassment, Dealing with Violence in the Work Place, and many other topics that relate to how our Supervisory team engages our employees and clients.

This is a branch of the National Police Department specializing in preventive measures against Kidnapping and Extortion, which are prevalent and dangerous crimes in Latin America. The team had an opportunity to create bonds with key players of law enforcement and with the leaders of this agency. Today, Gaula sponsors additional community programs which teach the private sector and general public basic guidelines for prevention, as well as survival techniques..

7 Page 7 REVIEWING LESSONS ON SCHOOL SAFETY School Safety (Excerpt) - By: Mark Tarallo Schools are defending against potential active-shooter situations with training sessions, physical security improvements, and programs addressing root causes. Despite the sickening regularity of new school shootings, every such instance traces its roots to Columbine. Columbine set the stage to tell us that we re not ready, we need to change, says Timothy Dimoff, CPP, a former SWAT team member and president of SACS Consulting and Investigative Services, a firm that specializes in active shooter situations. The key lesson of the event, Dimoff says, was that the first responders are no longer the police. The potential victims in the buildings are now the first responders. Working from the perimeter is no longer correct procedure; officers are trained to go in immediately, often alone. Neutralizing the Shooter has become the imperative, and it comes before first aid. Training: Jen Kappler helped conduct active shooter response training sessions at a K-8 grade Catholic school in the Cleveland area. During the training sessions, teachers were encouraged to think of three main options in an active shooting scenario: hide, barricade, or evacuate. In situations where hiding was the best option, teachers were instructed to avoid having students huddle together in a corner, which could result in greater fatalities as it allows the shooter to aim at a large group. For the barricading option, teachers were encouraged to think about what they could potentially use to block the door, such as desks or cabinets. To aid evacuation, the school instituted a color-coded mapping system so that whoever reported the shooter could also report his or her approximate location in the school. Knowledge of the shooter s location helps teachers determine whether evacuation is an option, Kappler says. To catch the reader's attention, place an interesting sentence or quote from the story here. Perimeter Security: Some schools have decided to undergo a physical security assessment. Several years ago, the school (NY) decided to upgrade its physical security, with a particular focus on its ability to go into lockdown. The District opted to install a wireless proximity card-based locking system. Thus, if a shooter enters the building, the principal has the power to immediately lock all classroom doors. To continue its security upgrade, the district is now in the process of applying a special film to all classroom door windows. The film is not bulletproof or even bullet resistant, but it hardens the glass so that it does not shatter when shot. Philosophies: Active shooter response training sessions have been updated. One is Run Hide Fight, an approach supported by the Department of Homeland Security. Another training approach, ALICE (Alert-Lockdown-Inform-Counter-Evacuate), is specifically geared toward school shootings, and also uses the run, hide, and fight concepts. Root Response: The Columbine shooting changed school security in another way-it acted as a catalyst for efforts by schools to address the root causes of violence, says Barbara Colorosso, a school violence expert. Anti-bullying programs may help this situation, but schools often need more. School cameras, for example, can make students feel safer because they feel less likely to be targeted if the aggressors are being filmed. Put in an effective security program with all the technological tools that are sensible and available, working hand-in hand with a caring school environment where everyone counts, and everyone matters.
