7 1.Information is the key to good decisions 2. Information should flow in all directions 3. Provide as much intel as possible 4. Use any and all available means to communicate (radios, text, PA system) 5. Parent Education Nights (how they should respond to an emergency) BE SPECIFIC! Lock down, Lock down!!! 7

12 The idea of alert, run, hide and fight has been recommended by many law enforcement agencies Threat Assessment and prevention is also key Bullying Prevention 12

13 WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN POLICE ARRIVE Officers usually enter the facility in small teams They may wear regular patrol uniforms, or external vests, helmets, or other tactical equipment They may be armed with rifles, shotguns, handguns They may use pepper spray or tear gas WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN POLICE ARRIVE 13

14 They may shout commands and push individuals to the ground for their safety Officers will not stop to assist injured persons until the shooter is stopped Secondary officers will tend to the wounded and may call upon able-bodied individuals to assist once the shooter has been stopped WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN POLICE ARRIVE Remain calm and follow officers instructions Put down any items in your hands (bags, jackets, etc) Immediately raise hands and spread fingers Keep hands visible at all times Avoid making quick movements toward officers Avoid pointing, screaming or yelling Do not stop to ask the officers for directions or help Just proceed in the direction from which the officers entered the premises HOW TO REACT WHEN POLICE ARRIVE 14

OUR POLICY GIVES STAFF MEMBERS PERMISSION TO DO ONE THING AND ONE THING ONLY. WAIT.
