Chef Steve's hamburger basket! You'll get third of a pound burger with bun, trimmings and chips for ONLY $3. The Burger Basket will be available from 5 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 6, March 6. Tacos will be served on Feb. 20, March 21, Note that the March date is a Wednesday, instead of the usual Taco Tuesday. The March 21 date Taco night will coincide with a visit to the Marion Post by National Commander Denise Rohan, a native Iowan. Commander Rohan has said that she wants to meet as many members of the Legion Family as possible, so be sure and attend Taco Wednesday on March 21. Serving for tacos is from 5 to 7 p.m. If you haven't already, be sure and buy a cool Post 298 polo shirt, T-shirt, sweatshirt, hat or visor, for a reasonable price. Samples of the apparel and prices are available in the bar. You can also place your order in the bar. But please also wear your Post 298 apparel elsewhere. 2 Post 298 Jim Crowley, Commander From the Commander As we begin the month of February on I would like to say that the Legion's 100th Birthday is close at hand. I have one idea, if it works, that I will share with you soon. Roger Norfolk and I would be open to any and all ideas you may have for us, as a post, to celebrate. Next, March, April and May, will once again bring us to time for taking nominations for Officers. We will be looking for Commander, 1st Vice Commander, 2nd Vice Commander, Adjutant, Chaplain, Finance, Sgt at Arms, Historian, and Service Officer. We, as officers, welcome your nominations and will be calling for them at the Post meetings during the upcoming months. June 24th will mark our 2nd Annual Car Show from 1-5 pm here at the post. I hope you'll stop by and vote for your favorite car in the show! Service Officer Report Rich Hartgrave I am in the process of revising my Visitation List with the help of Ron Tyne. If anyone knows of those Veterans I should be visiting in the Care Centers or at Home please contact me so I can get their names, address's, and phone number's. The 2018 Mid- Winter Conference is being held at the Airport Holiday Inn, 6111 Fleur Drive, Des Moines, Iowa on February 8-11, It will be a time well spent with much information given out. Marion American Legion is providing two separate, one time only, $ scholarships toward tuition. Senior high school student must be child, grandchild, stepchild, or step-grandchild of a Marion Post #298 Legion or Auxiliary member. Application and support documentation deadline: Saturday, March 31, 2018, postmark date or drop off at Marion American Legion Post #298 building, located at st Street, Marion, Iowa, Application is available on our website: or at our legion building located at st St., Marion, Iowa. #2 Marion American Legion Post #298 offers $ Educational Trust Scholarship. This scholarship is available to veterans, seniors attending an accredited high school, or currently enrolled students at a post-secondary institution. The amount is $ toward tuition, one time only. Applicant must reside in Linn County, Iowa. If currently attending post-secondary school, the applicants home address must be in Linn County, Iowa. Applicant must be a veteran, legal child, grand child, stepchild or step-grandchild of a veteran of the United States Armed Forces. Applicant must be accepted, admitted, or currently enrolled to a trade, technical school, 2 or 4 year college. 3 Unit 298 President Jackie Tyne From the President I was sitting here today Jan 24 and thought to myself WOW its only 11 months to Christmas Eve how scary is that! We haven't had a lot going on because we cancelled our Jan. Meeting however we are going to need a lot of volunteers to Donate pies and bars for the fish fries they can be frozen or we can bake them here at the Legion That is a good way to help support Girls State we are doing that instead of having a raffle for a quilt just something different this year lets help out the Girl State program and donate pies pies, pies. Our first Fish Fry is Friday Feb 16thso lets have some fun and bake some pies. On Feb 13th is our next Potato Bar i just love those big baked potatoes with every thing on it don't you. Well maybe this next newsletter will bring some warmer weather even though we can't complain to much (nobody wants to listen anyway). We are at 75% on our Auxiliary Dues still time to get them paid that helps us and the legion. Remember to thank a service member for their service. For God & Country Jackie Tyne President. Your Auxiliary is sponsoring a STOCKING CAP drive again. They will be delivered to the Veteran's Outreach Center in Cedar Rapids. Bring in NEW stocking caps for men, women, and/or children. If you don't like to shop, donate money and we'll do the shopping. In previous years, we've been able to donate hundreds of hats - lets do it again. It is pretty darn cold out there!!!! Put your donated hats in the bottom of the food cart by February 19 (Auxiliary meeting) and we'll deliver all the hats at once. Auxiliary members - if you bring a hat to the February meeting, you'll get a prize! SAL Sqdn 298 Lyle Himes, Commander Our last breakfast on the 12th was well attended. We had 136 customers. Our next breakfast is February 11th, same menu and time as always. Thank you to all for your support. At our last meeting we donated $300 to an 8U baseball team thru Marion high school. Reminder to all our members, dues need to be in soon to be able to keep your continuous years up to date. Our agenda is already in the planning stages. We will have charity rides, Honor Flights, tenderloin fries and of course a lot of breakfast to get through. As we progress into February, it will be time to plan the spring clean up on our favorite mode of transportation. Maybe add a gadget or chrome or whatever makes you feel good. The first ride of the new season is not to far off and I know some of us have already been down that road. Thanks go out to our men and women serving in the military protecting us as we start planning the events and activities we want to be apart of this year. 5 General Meeting of The Marion American Legion Post 298 1/8/2018 Meeting was called to order by Commander Jim Crowley, with the Posting of the Colors, Prayer, Pledge of Allegiance, and repeating of the Preamble to the Constitution of The American Legion. A moment of silence was held for deceased members, POWs, and MIAs. Russell Anthony, Elmer J Brant, Don E Chalstrom, and Marvin D Hollingworth were transferred to The Post Everlasting. Members Present 40 New Members; Gene Stoneking and Roger J Dykstra; Gene served in the army and was stationed at Ft Greely, Alaska from Roger served in the navy during the Lebanon conflict from Commander Crowley presented both with lapel pins. Guests; Reverend Vance Barton CBN Published General Meeting Minutes; December minutes were approved as published. 1 st Vice, Membership; Tom reported that membership is at 1,105 or 91%. We need 104 renewals to reach goal. 2 nd Vice, Entertainment; We are still looking for some one to fill this very important position. Dean reported that we have had two Legionnaires step forward to take positions on the entertainment committee, Matt Masters will coordinate the fish fries and Robert Demastus will coordinate the Omelet Breakfasts. Both of these functions are important to the post. With our help and support they will be a complete success. These men are not taking the 2 nd Vicecommander s job. The only thing Dean asked is that you give them the same amount of support that you gave him. Finances; Mike Barron gave the post financial report for December. The major incomes for August were 2 nd Vice, and hall rental. The major expenses for December were Boys State, and utilities. Mike went over the final budget for Mike Barron moved that we approve the budget Keith Hixon second, motion passed. Building Corporation; Gary Peiffer presented the December financial report for the Building Corporation. He reported that they had extended the tower contract out to 2030 with an increase on the monthly rental. Vets Club Corporation; Dean presented the December financial report for the Vets Club. tournaments will be starting Saturday January 13 th and every Saturday thought March. He also reminded us of the tacos on Tuesdays and on January 20 th there will be karaoke in the bar. Starting in February the Vets Club will be having Burger Baskets on Mondays. Service Officer; Richard Hartgrave reported that he and the adjutant Ron were going over our list of members in care facilities, if anyone knows of a veteran in a care facility please let Richard know. The care facilities cannot release that information. SGT. At Arms; Ron reported that we had perform 72 military rites in 2017, and we had already performed 2 this month. Historian; Ken reported that he had a new flash, for his camera and Commander Crowley (who is a professional photographer) was giving him pointers. Children & Youth; Boy s State; Commander Crowley reported that he has five boys for Boys State, they are Rory Bosrwick Xavier (from Marion), George Chadima Prairie (from Swisher), Peter Londe Prairie (from Walford), Luke Granger Linn-Marr (from Cedar Rapids), and Derrick Dolezal Linn-Marr (from Marion). Oratorical; Ron reported last Sunday they held the Linn County Oratorical Contest, The county had one candidate, Ethan Lowder (from Xavier). The young man did an outstanding job. He attended Boys State and Boys Nation last year. Ethan learned of the contest from Caleb Engle, last year s Oratorical Champion, when they were at Boy s State. Ron invited all to the 2 nd District Oratorical Contest Jan 14 th. Junior Shooting Sports; Roger Norfolk reported that Ely Post 555 has started a junior shooting program and is looking at opening it up to county. Cub Scouts; Andy Schmidt reported that the Cub Scouts were doing fine and were good for another year. SAL; Ron reported the meeting opened at 18:30. They had a guest from an AAU baseball team requesting a donation. He was well received, and his presentation went well. Discussion continued about who was going to handle their contributions to the kitchen supplies. They will be having a polish assuage night on the 4 th Tuesday. Their Officer pins were in and they were encouraging to wear them on their hats. They decided on giving $ to the AAU baseball team. They then discussed the article they were submitting to the Marion Times. Meeting adjourned at 18:52 Legion Riders; Rodger Norfolk gave the Riders December financial report. They did not meet in December and will probably have the same officers again next year. Old Business; None New Business; Department Commander Etzel informed us the January 16 th will be Veterans Day on the Hill. We will meet at Department Head Quarters for a briefing on our legislative goals for this coming year, and at10:00 we will shuttle up to the Capital for an event in the rotunda. We will end the day by lobbying with our representatives, He then talked about the up coming Mid-Winter Conference in Des Moines. It will be held from February 8 th to 11 th. The purpose of mid-winter is training. There will be a number of workshops from post administration to baseball. There will also be a woman s veterans meeting Saturday afternoon. Sunday morning at 8:00, the State Level Oratorical Contest will be held at the conference. He reminded us of the National Commanders upcoming visit in March. For The Good of the Legion; Reverend Vance Barton from the Christian Broad Cast Network Read a tribute to us. The tribute was well received. He has prayed over the graves of our fallen. Commander reported to us about Sprit of Iowa Bell, which travels the state. Commander would like to have it here for an event like Memorial Day or our Centennial. He also reminded us that we are coming up on the first nominations for post officers in March. Ron announced who had volunteered for the two new committees. Published in the newsletter is a list of those who are serving and their positions. Bob Berridge announced that the Linn County Meeting is to be held in Lisbon on January 23 rd, all are welcome to attend. Commander Crowley accepted the donation of a picture of Steve Evans father s LCS ship. Correspondence We Received a thank you and a donation for military rites from Frances B Daubenmier for Arnold Lanning. We received a donation from Jennifer Engel for the Rider s Legacy Run. We have received thank you letters from Kylie Houlubar and Christy Harder for their scholarships Upcoming Events; Dean announced the upcoming events.
