RANGER REGISTER THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY RANGER ASSOCIATION, INC. DEDICATED TO THE IDEALS AND PRINCIPLES OF THE AMERICAN MILITARY RANGER. The 2005 Annual Ranger Muster (ARM-2005) will be held on 5-8 July in Columbus, GA. USARA will have its HQ (Hospitality Quarters) in the new Hilton Garden Inn Columbus, 1500 Bradley Lakes Boulevard. Reserve now. Details on pages 3, 10 and 11. FROM THE COMMANDING R OFFICER'S TENT angers, this special Annual Ranger Muster edition is coming to you only by way of this E-zine form, due entirely to the time critical nature of the situation. We have only six weeks until we kick off ARM Suffice to say, your attendance is naturally and greatly encouraged. As you know, USARA comes back to Fort Benning every other year (with each Region rotating as host in-between). At Benning, we join with the Ranger Regiment and the Ranger Training Brigade in their celebration of Ranger Rendezvous Week, where we coordinate a number of our events with theirs. We will be headquartered at the new Columbus Hilton Garden Inn. The registration form is enclosed and can be also found at The event schedules can also be found there. For those of you who haven t been to Columbus and Fort Benning in a while, you will be surprised at the many changes that have taken place. In addition, there are many other things to do in the area. At a previous ARM my wife Susan and I drive down to the National POW Museums at Andersonville, on the site of the infamous Civil War prison camp. This is a must see, as it has incorporated the history of United States military prisoners of war, from the Revolutionary War to the present. Volume XII, No. 2 Page 1
USARA BOARD MEMBERS STRICKEN Late word from Frank Casey, USARA Executive V.P., is that two members of the USARA Board of Directors are having serious health problems. USARA Secretary Gregg Orth had been hospitalized for knee replacement surgery and has had some complications. The latest of which has been an open wound on his heel not healing. Gregg s wife, Judy, has kept Frank up to date and Gregg remains in our prayers for getting that wound healed up. USARA Treasurer Tom Herring has been in the hospital since early may with congestive heart failure. He has had a couple of stints placed in arteries and is presently on a ventilator. Tom is one tough old cuss, but he could really use our prayers right now. WARNING! USARA President Maguire has signed up for the Shotgun Range at this year s ARM Stay at least 10 feet behind him and do not make any sudden moves!! From the CO s Tent (Continued) This year, Susan and I will work in the Woodruff museum, known as Port Columbus Civil War Naval Museum Center, at 1002 Victory Drive ( and the FDR home at Warm Springs, Georgia. So, in addition to all the activities and fraternity with young active duty Rangers, and not-soyoung former Rangers, it ll be a full week. Please join us! Box Fort Benning, GA WWII RANGER STEEL POT FOUND WASHINGTON D.C.- (May 12, 2005) U.S. Representative Chet Edwards has secured $500,000 to preserve Pointe du Hoc, the historic cliff on Omaha Beach in Normandy France that was scaled by Lt. Col. Earl Rudder and his Rudder's Rangers on the June 6, 1944 D-Day Invasion. The funding was added by Edwards in the 2006 Military Quality of Life and Veterans Appropriations Subcommittee. Edwards is ranking member. "Pointe du Hoc stands today as a sacred symbol to the world of the American GI's unwavering courage in World War II," said Edwards. "We must preserve this hallowed ground for future generations." Pointe du Hoc, the most historic site of the D- Day Invasion, is currently at risk due to continuing coastal erosion. It is critically important to Mr. Marco Jacobs of Holland has a WWII Ranger steel helmet with the name Bill Young in it. If you survey the site, identify culturally significant know anything about Ranger Young, please contact Mr. Jacobs at: resources and preserve the site for historic remembrance. Since 2001, the observation post has Marco Jacobs Stichting Leven acther prikkeldrad been closed to the public. The site contains valuable historic information about the battle and a Burgerdijkstraat XC Krimpen a/d Ijssel plaque erected by the State of Texas honoring Lt. Netherlands Col. Earl Rudder, who later became President of Texas A&M University. Volume XII, Number 2 Page 3
"Mrs. Margaret Rudder was a special friend of mine and while I never met General Rudder, his brave leadership has been an inspiration to me, countless Aggies, and people throughout the world," said Edwards. "When I visited Pointe du Hoc on the 50 th anniversary of D-Day in 1995, I would have never imagined that this monument to American courage might be lost forever by erosion. That would be a national and international tragedy. "I am deeply grateful that Dr. David Woodcock at A&M's College of Architecture brought this issue to my attention and has already been working to preserve the site. We need ensure that A&M continues its work to preserve historic artifacts at the site and determine if it is possible to stop the erosion and ultimate destruction of Pointe du Hoc," said Edwards. David Woodcock, Director of the Historic Resources Imaging Lab at the College of Architecture said, "Few sites have more dramatic power than Pointe du Hoc in Normandy, where the Second Ranger Division [sic] under Earl Rudder scaled the cliffs on D-Day in 1944 to destroy Nazi gun emplacements that commanded the Utah and Omaha beaches. The site is under immediate threat from coastal erosion and from a significant increase in tourism. The support and leadership of Congressman Edwards will provide a definitive and comprehensive record of the entire battle site; creating a faithful record of the event that will ensure its effective management and aid interpretation of the site, to fully acknowledge the acts of bravery of these American heroes for future generations." FAKE WARRIORS AND LYING WANNABES By Henry Mark Holzer Via the Internet As the authors of FAKE WARRIORS, IDENTI- FYING, EXPOSING AND PUNISHING THOSE WHO FALSIFY THEIR MILITARY SERVICE, Henry and Erika Holzer are often asked whether Fake Warriors "really" cause any harm. The following answers that question: Your fake warrior information is intensely interesting to me. Before reading your s I had never heard the term. I would love to read your book but feel it may be too painful. In 1998 I married a man who was 58 years old at the time, second marriage for both of us. From the beginning of our relationship, one of his main topics of conversation was about his experience in Vietnam. He claimed to be a marine Lieutenant, Force Recon, platoon leader and served his time in Khe Sanh. This was in 1967 and He claimed to have gone to officer's training on Paris [sic] Island in the summer during his college years. He also claimed to have been stationed in California, had special navigation schooling in Connecticut and a training cruise in the Mediterranean. He said he was wounded three times, very superficial however, like a broken finger from diving into a foxhole. He talked about his missions in the hills surrounding Khe Sanh, picking up body parts, clothes rotting in the jungle, his body guard sergeant, radioing air strikes. He said he threw his medals over the White House fence in a war protest just as his hero, John Kerry had done. Then I realized! most of what he talked about had been on a History Channel television program recently. His favorite programs seemed to be about war and weapons. When I questioned him too closely about specific details he would start to cry and tell me it was too painful for him to talk about anymore. He was a very troubled and angry man and after less than three years of marriage I packed up what I could in my car and Volume XII, Number 2 Page 4
drove halfway across the country hoping he would never be able to find me. I was 60 years old and would not put up with his threats and anger anymore. I left October 1, I hired a private detective and found out his life history as told to me was mostly a lie. He claimed to have graduated from Lehigh University with a mechanical engineering degree. He left after three years, no degree there. He claimed to have an MBA from Temple. He really did earn a degree there but it was in business and economics. On his sworn, under penalty of perjury, divorce papers he said he had a chemical engineering degree and the MBA. I also found a secret bank statement saying he was an attorney. Next I contacted Marine Corps Headquarters In Arlington, Virginia to find out if he had ever been in the Corps. I spoke to them on the phone and they could find no record! of him, either by name or social security number. I then wrote to Headquarters asking for the same information so I could have written proof. Same answer, he never was a Marine. This person would write me letters accusing me of punishing him again for being in Vietnam, just like he was spat upon when he returned to this country. In his divorce papers he claimed to be suffering Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome because of his service in the war. As far as I know he has never claimed any benefits for being a veteran. All he wanted was money from me as I was economically more well off than he was. It took three years and two months to get a divorce from this man and it is not over yet. He caused and is causing alot of suffering. And I think there is nothing I can do about any of the lies, except share. Thank you for reading my letter. I wish I was the only person this had ever happened to. Editor s note: Thanks to Mark and Erika Holzer for their good work in ferreting out these wannabes who are lower than pond scum. Keep up the good work Mark and Erika, we Rangers love you. 6 POW /MIA MISSION UPDATE Ranger Mike McClintock, better known as McGeek, editor of the Ranger Register, is also a member of the San Francisco- Ho Chi Minh City Sister City Committee. One of the activities that he has been pursuing while a member of the Sister City Committee Board of Directors is a full accounting for all U.S. military personnel MIA or KIA in Southeast Asia. Recently, McGeek had the opportunity to spend some time one on one with the new U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam, Michael W. Marine. McGeek asked Ambassador Marine for an update on two U.S. Army Rangers known to have been killed in Vietnam; CPT Humbert R. (Rocky) Versace and MSG Kenneth M. Roraback. The U.S. Army Ranger Association wishes to extend its gratitude and thanks to Ambassador Marine and to the men and women of the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) for the work that they do. Below is the Ambassador s response to McGeek s inquiry. Continued Volume XII, Number 2 Page 6

GEN ANDREW GOODPASTER Excerts from article by Adam Bernstein Washington Post Staff Writer May 17, 2005 GEN (Ret.) Andrew J. Goodpaster, former presidential adviser and commander of NATO died May 16 of prostate cancer at Walter Reed Army Medical Center at the age of 90. GEN Goodpaster spent more than four decades as a soldier and statesman, in which time he saw combat in World War II, was deputy commander of U.S. forces in Vietnam and served four presidents. He retired as commander of NATO forces in 1974, and returned to active service three years later to become the 51st superintendent of West Point, his alma mater. During World War II, he led an engineer battalion over a minefield under hostile fire, for which he received the Distinguished Service Cross, the secondhighest military award for valor after the Medal of Honor. His other decorations included the Silver Star, two awards of the Legion of Merit and two awards of the Purple Heart. From 1950 to 1954 he served as special assistant to the chief of staff of Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe from 1950 to 1954 and assisted GEN Dwight D. Eisenhower, the NATO commander for part of that time. Volume XII, Number 2 Page 7
SGT Orlando W. Chada GEN Andrew J. Goodpaster Later, as president, Eisenhower asked GEN Goodpaster to serve as staff secretary in the White House. Returning to the field he served as assistant division commander for operations with the 3 rd Infantry Division in Würzburg, Germany. From there Goodpaster advanced through a series of sensitive positions in the 1960s on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. President Lyndon B. Johnson used him as an intermediary with Eisenhower for military suggestions in the escalating Vietnam War. "President Johnson asked the question: Can we win in Vietnam and what do we have to do?" Gen. Goodpaster told U.S. News & World Report decades later. "That question came to me." He advocated a stronger military role to win the war and became frustrated that the political will never materialized. He served as military adviser to the sixman U.S. team involved in the Paris peace talks with the North Vietnamese in summer 1968 and spent the rest of the year as deputy to Gen. Creighton W. Abrams Jr., commander of U.S. forces in Vietnam. From 1969 to 1974, he was NATO supreme allied commander. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Anderson Goodpaster of Washington; two daughters, Susan Sullivan of Alexandria and Anne Batte of Salisbury, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and a greatgrandson. T he United States Army Ranger Association honors SGT Orlando W. (Bill) Chada, who passed away in January SGT Chada s family made contributions in his name to both USARA and the Ranger Memorial Foundation. SGT Chada served with the 4 th Ranger Company and was awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman s Badge, Korean Service Medal, Silver Star, Bronze Star, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), Sr. Parachute Badge, UN Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal and WWII Victory medal. Ranger Chada participated in the construction of an ICBM radar station in Greenland during the Cold War. He worked in law enforcement and was an Oregon State trooper. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of foreign Wars. Volume XII, Number 2 Page 8
