3 Introduction INTRODUCTION This book provides a resource for the study of the 50 states and the territories of the United States of America. Each chapter contains a one-page narrative about the state or territory. Each narrative includes facts of major importance or interest about the subject. An at a glance box contains basic statistics and information about each state. Also, each narrative contains an illustration of the state s or territory s flag. Following each narrative is a short-answer question page. These questions provide a quick check of reading comprehension. Also included for each chapter is a geography exercise and suggestions for further reading or research. Regional map exercises are included at the end of the book. These can be used as review exercises when the activities for all the states in a region have been completed. Teachers may choose to use the readings as class projects or as extra enrichment activities for individual students. The activities lend themselves to individual student work. If the instructor would prefer to have group projects, he or she could organize the states by region, and the students could then enter into discussions of comparisons of the various states. 4 Alabama ALABAMA The earliest inhabitants of what is now Alabama arrived over 11,000 years ago. Charcoal drawings made by these people still exist in Russell Cave. During the sixteenth century, Spanish explorers, including Hernando de Soto, visited the area. They found many advanced Native American cultures. Tribes of Creek, Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Choctaw lived in the area at the time. The French made the first permanent settlement on Mobile Bay in After the French and Indian War of 1763, the French lost the territory to the British. However, the Spanish continued to claim the southern part of the state. The British ruled until the land became the property of the United States. Alabama became the twenty-second state in The Civil War had an important effect on Alabama. The state left the United States on January 11, 1861, and declared itself a republic. It then became one of the Confederate States of America. The state became known as the Cradle of the Confederacy. Alabama s capital, Montgomery, was the first capital of the Confederacy. The state suffered throughout the war and the Reconstruction period that followed. Helen Keller was one of the state s most noted citizens. She became blind and deaf as the result of a childhood illness. Through the work of her teacher, Annie Sullivan, she learned to communicate in spite of her disabilities. She became a noted author and a symbol of overcoming physical disadvantages. One of Alabama s nicknames is the Cotton State. Cotton was the major crop of the state for many years. However, an insect called the boll weevil almost wiped out the cotton crop at the beginning of the twentieth century. The town of Enterprise erected a monument to the boll weevil in The boll weevil disaster forced farmers to plant other crops, especially peanuts. An exslave, George Washington Carver, developed over 300 products and uses for the peanut alone. The building of railroads and the establishment of a steel industry changed the economy of the state. Industries began to replace agriculture as the major source of income in the 1880s. Alabama was the location of many important civil rights events. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give her seat on a bus to a white passenger. Her act of defiance led to a Supreme Court ruling that bus segregation was unconstitutional. Martin Luther King, Jr., led the protest against her arrest. In 1965, Dr. King led a now-famous protest march from Selma to Montgomery. Huntsville became an important part of the American rocket and space industry during the Second World War. American and German scientists worked together to develop rockets. The West launched its first satellite, Explorer I, in Both the satellite and its rocket were developed in Huntsville. The United States Space and Rocket Center is in Huntsville.
