8 Future Force Battle Command Initiative (F2BCI) F2BCI is an innovative Battle Command Initiative which will holistically address Battle Command across the domains of UA, UE and current force. F2BCI will identify Low Hanging Fruit that can support the current force while addressing the needs of the future force. F2BCI was created by combining two mainline BC ATO s namely NEBC and C2ORE. 8

Software for JTCW/JC2 that aid command/staff planning and execution: Mission Planning and Execution for JTCW. C2IEDM compliant interface for JTCW. Studies on DCGS/JC2 and CPoF/JTCW interfaces. Payoff: Seamless collaboration between Current and Future (UE and UA) systems. Increased speed and quality of UE command decisions. 10

Products: SoSCOE compliant FCS Battle Command software services: Tactical Battle Command, to include unmanned system planning/re-planning Air/Ground Collaboration Analysis of network performance, software services, robotic/autonomy characteristics, and payload performance. Integrate sensor planning and placement software into FBCB2 architecture; Red sensor data into FBCB2; Low bandwidth collaboration. Payoff: Complex mission execution through effective battle command, teaming, and exploitation of unmanned air and ground system information. Decreased decision-making cycle time. 11 Executive Review

Product: Breadboard demonstration of Position, Location and Tracking technology Navigation system specifications for the components and for the integrated system. Payoff: Capability to precisely locate and track soldiers and platforms for Future Force operations, training and DOT&E Transitions - Net Assisted GPS - Dead Reckoning Devices (MEMs/IMUs) 12
13 C2D ATO Future Force Power Watts Less weight, lower cost longer missions 13 Soldier Power- Batteries/ Hybrid Fast Recharge Batteries Fuel Cell Battery Hybrid Quiet Power Sources Self Powered Battery Charger Kilowatts Tactical Power- Logistics Fuel Co-generation power/cooling Less fuel, smaller, quieter power sources Purpose: Develop component technologies for power systems for increased mission duration while decreasing logistics burden Results: Soldiers 250 Watt Man-portable field battery charger and improved rechargeable batteries Hybrid power source (fuel cell & battery) Vehicles Quiet, logistics fueled 1-2kW power source 2-5kW co-generation system with cooling system driven off waste heat Payoff: Increases Soldier mobility & sustainability and deployability by reducing primary batteries/energy requirements. Provides fuel savings by reducing fuel required for power sources. Reduced signature and increased energy adds mission capability. Possible Transitions: Hybrid demonstrators to Future Force Warrior in FY06 Quiet power & Co-generation cooling/power specification to PM-MEP in FY08
14 ATO (CERDEC NV Lead) Networked Sensors For the Future Force Purpose: Provide the commander of a reconnaissance and surveillance vehicle (RSV) with C2 tools to plan the resource allocation, management, and control of multiple platform/sensor assets owned by the RSV, thereby increasing situation awareness and enhancing battle planning and decision making abilities. Product: C2 tools for planning and execution of RSV s unmanned sensors/platforms Smart sensor data management Payoff: Increased tempo for planning and management of organic unmanned sensors/platforms for beyond line of sight battlefield situational awareness and targeting Increased coverage area per recon and surveillance vehicle Real-time sensor information distribution supports dynamic situation awareness development 14

17 Trends & Considerations C2D Corporate - Balanced portfolio of capability development - near term (current ops & POR) and far term (FCS) - Vacuum at UE level, but getting better - Increased emphasis on joint capabilities - with individual sister services and JFCOM - Systems engineering for C4ISR - Presenting data as soldier-friendly knowledge for BC and Pos/Nav (e.g. heading, map features, etc.) - Increased emphasis on leverage of capabilities and resources from other organizations Power - batteries, generators, and ECU's to hybrid power systems. Platform Integration and Prototyping - Pursuing customers from other services - Improved efficiency through ISO 9000 compliancy and 6 sigma concepts Battle Command - FBCB2 and JTCW are the two most important near/mid-term C2 systems - Net- Centricity. Apply to evolution of existing capabilities and development of new capabilities - Battle Command Migration Plan Pos/Nav - Software Defined Rcvrs for positioning using Signals of Opportunity (FM Radio, TV Stations, VLF, ) - Urban/Subsurface Navigation for dismounted soldier within size, weight, and power requirements. - Integration of navigation sensors - Network assisted GPS - Micro electro-mechanical inertial measurement unit - Enhanced dead reckoning devices - Mission configurable system through software configurable radio, miniature navigation sensors and more powerful processors. 17
