5 Commander s Virtual Staff Purpose: Identify workflow and automation technology to assist Battalion Commander and Staff in monitoring operations, synchronizing staff processes, maintaining live running estimates, and creating actionable information for decision making in complex environments PROJECT SCHEDULE Products: MC Task Analysis: Identify MC METL tasks for automation to augment Commanders and Staff decision-making Workflow Structure: Software tools that synchronize and accelerate Commander and Staff s execution of MDMP in a flexible and modifiable framework to support unit SOP Running Estimate and COA Assessment: Software algorithms and models for continuous mission monitoring and to compare alternative COAs; alerts Commander and Staff of decisions to be made or corrective actions taken Assessment Visualization: Consolidate data and process into actionable information; Allows presentation and inspection into disaggregated lower level assessments Task Automation: Software agents to automate processes and procedures for Commander and Staff Payoff: Faster decision cycle Improved Staff process synchronization Align system capabilities to Commander & Staff processes 5
6 Mission Command of Autonomous Systems - Research Purpose: Extend Mission Command at BN echelon and below focusing on unmanned system planning and tactical utilization. Build capabilities that integrate into the Army s mission command strategy that will allow commanders and staff to dynamically task systems and expect intelligent responses. Products: Tools to simplify and automate the process for a commander to create a detailed Robotic and Autonomous Systems (RAS) utilization plan from high-level tasks. Tools to help leaders maintain awareness and provide direction to RAS at critical mission intervention points. Define advanced behaviors (e.g. reconnaissance) for autonomous ground and air systems to allow for high-level tasking and execution PROJECT SCHEDULE Payoff: Integrate RAS into the planning process and allow commanders to direct RAS from the mission objective level rather than the task level Reduce cognitive burden by providing simple tools to mission command teams of unmanned systems. Increase formation effectiveness through integrated RAS teaming with military formations. 6
