2 Letter from the Baron and Baroness Congratulations! You have taken the first step toward the Vulkanfeldt Sergeantry Trials. If you have this Study Guide in hand, you have presented yourself before us in court and announced your intent to participate. The Trials will commence this year, being 2013 in the year of our Lord, in conjunction with testing of our wonderful neighbors, the Barony of Wastekeep, hosts for the trials. Date and location will be announced at a future time. The day of the Trials will be a full day of testing (oral and written), fighting, armor inspections, dance, games, a Court of Love, and during the evening feast the bardic presentations. The Trials will be a long and arduous day. Testing will be judged on a point system, with 80% required for a passing score. As this is not a camping event, for those traveling from outside our area, we suggest that you contact either ourselves or one of our local Sergeantry regarding overnight accommodations. Attempting the rank of Sergeant, Gallant, Yeoman, Artisan or Courtier will no doubt be one of the most difficult tasks you undertake in the SCA. We rejoice at your excitement as you leaf through the Study Guide the first time, and sympathize with you as your studies engulf your days. The Study Guide you hold in your hands includes what our expectations in regard to Heraldry, Geography, Dance, Courtly Love, Bardic Presentation, Games, Armor / Armor Inspection, Weapons, the Baronesses Question, and specific requirements for Sergeant, Gallant, Yeoman, Courtier. You have our well wishes and our support. Remember that the Trials are intentionally designed to be tough and to challenge you to reach new limits. Many of the aspects you will be tested upon are considered Peer-Like Qualities. Even if peerage is not your ultimate goal, having these skills may be useful in many aspects of your life.
