This Instruction implements Air Force Policy Directive 51-8, Assignment, Training, and Management of Members of The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve. It governs management of The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve, and establishes eligibility and processing requirements for assignment to The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve. This publication applies to members of the Regular Air Force, the United States Air Force Reserve and the Air National Guard, as well as to individuals applying for an assignment to The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve. SUMMARY OF CHANGES This document has been substantially revised and must be completely reviewed. Major changes include: revised paralegal qualification, application, and assignment procedures; revised standard for wear of the Air Force Judge Advocate badge. Technical and administrative revisions include clarification of procedures for designation and assignment of Air National Guard judge advocates; references to Headquarters United States Air Force Judge Advocate Reserve Programs changed to the Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General. Section A Purpose and Authority. 1. Purpose. Provide accession and removal criteria and standards to meet the peacetime and mobilization readiness requirements for high-quality legal and paralegal personnel in The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve. The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve is comprised of all judge advocates and paralegals serving in an active status in the Air National Guard and the United States Air Force Reserve. 2. Authority. 10 United States Code Sections 806, 8037; Air Force Policy Directive The Judge Advocate General has the authority to designate officers as judge advocates and enlisted members as paralegals, to assign judge advocates and paralegals for duty, and to direct judge advocates and paralegals in the performance of their duties. Section B Roles and Responsibilities. 3. The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve Judge Advocate Leadership The Judge Advocate General. The Judge Advocate General selects officers and officer candidates for duty as judge advocates in The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve and designates them as judge advocates. The Judge Advocate General is the approval authority for all Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve judge advocate and paralegal assignments. The Judge Advocate General assigns and attaches Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve members for duty, establishes training standards and requirements, decides upon accession and removal of Air Reserve Component judge advocates and paralegals, and provides professional oversight and supervision for all Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve members.

3 AFI MARCH The Mobilization Assistant to The Judge Advocate General, acting on behalf of The Judge Advocate General, provides force management, force development, and professional supervision and oversight for judge advocates and paralegals assigned to the United States Air Force Reserve. These duties include developing and implementing policies and programs for United States Air Force Reserve judge advocates and paralegals, providing management oversight for the proper training and mission readiness of all United States Air Force Reserve judge advocates and paralegals, and recommending, through the Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General, the selection and assignment of all United States Air Force Reserve judge advocates and paralegals The Air National Guard Assistant to The Judge Advocate General, acting on behalf of The Judge Advocate General, and the Director, Air National Guard, provides force management, force development and professional supervision and oversight for judge advocates and paralegals assigned to the Air National Guard. These duties include developing and implementing policies and programs for Air National Guard judge advocates and paralegals, providing management oversight for the proper training and mission readiness of all Air National Guard judge advocates and paralegals, and recommending, through the Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General, the selection and assignment of all Air National Guard judge advocates and paralegals The Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General, acting on behalf of The Judge Advocate General, and in coordination with the Mobilization Assistant to The Judge Advocate General and the Air National Guard Assistant to The Judge Advocate General, as appropriate, serves as the primary action officer for recruiting, accessions, and assignments of Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve judge advocates, and aids in the formulation of management policies, including training policies, for The Judge Advocate General s decision The Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General and The Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, Headquarters Air Force Reserve Command implement decisions made by The Judge Advocate General by providing personnel management of Air Reserve Component members of The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve. 4. The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve Paralegal Leadership The Senior Paralegal Manager to The Judge Advocate General, on behalf of The Judge Advocate General, serves as the Senior Enlisted Advisor to The Judge Advocate General and senior staff on all issues regarding quality of life, morale, health and welfare of the Total Force Judge Advocate General s Corps enlisted force. Serves as a member of the Corps Strategic Planning Committee and the Judge Advocate General School Advisory Board. Responsible for oversight of Judge Advocate General s Corps paralegals The Air Force Paralegal Career Field Manager, on behalf of The Judge Advocate General, serves as the functional advisor to the field and the Senior Paralegal Manager to The Judge Advocate General on paralegal matters, training and manpower initiatives. Establishes policy and training requirements, oversees mission effectiveness, proper utilization and professional development of Regular Air Force and Air Reserve Component paralegals. Chairs the Regular Air Force Paralegal Enlisted Development Team panels, Paralegal Utilization and Training Workshops, and Specialty Training Requirements Team.

4 4 AFI MARCH The Individual Mobilization Augmentee to the Senior Paralegal Manager to The Judge Advocate General assists the Senior Paralegal Manager to The Judge Advocate General with the development of policies, and programs, affecting United States Air Force Reserve paralegals. The Individual Mobilization Augmentee to the Senior Paralegal Manager to The Judge Advocate General advises The Judge Advocate General, the Mobilization Assistant to The Judge Advocate General and the Senior Paralegal Manager to The Judge Advocate General on all Air Reserve Component paralegal accession, retraining, training, and assignment actions The Air Force Reserve Command Paralegal Manager manages the health and manpower of the Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve paralegals and manages command training and utilization issues, in conjunction and collaboration with the Air Force Career Field Manager and the Individual Mobilization Augmentee to the Senior Paralegal Manager to The Judge Advocate General. The Air Force Reserve Command Paralegal Manager formulates recommendations for United States Air Force Reserve paralegal accession, retraining, and assignment actions, and staffs such recommendations to The Judge Advocate General through the Individual Mobilization Augmentee to the Senior Paralegal Manager to The Judge Advocate General and the Senior Paralegal Manager to The Judge Advocate General. Upon obtaining the approval of The Judge Advocate General, the Air Force Reserve Command Paralegal Manager ensures the implementation of such actions The Air National Guard Paralegal Career Field Functional Manager assists the Senior Paralegal Manager to The Judge Advocate General with the development of policies and programs, affecting Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve paralegals, and advises The Judge Advocate General, the Air National Guard Assistant to The Judge Advocate General, and the Senior Paralegal Manager to The Judge Advocate General on all Air National Guard paralegal accession, retraining, training, and assignment actions. This individual is also the primary point of contact for all individuals seeking assignment into The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve as Air National Guard paralegals, and for reassignments of paralegals into, out of, or within the Air National Guard. This individual formulates recommendations for Air National Guard paralegal accession, retraining, assignment, and attachment actions, and staffs such recommendations to The Judge Advocate General through the Senior Paralegal Manager to The Judge Advocate General. Upon obtaining the approval of The Judge Advocate General, the Air National Guard Paralegal Career Field Functional Manager ensures the implementation of such actions. 5. Major Command Staff Judge Advocates are responsible for ensuring that Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve training programs at their offices, and at their subordinate legal offices, are implemented according to the training requirements established by The Judge Advocate General. 6. Staff Judge Advocates for the unit of assignment are responsible for implementing and supervising the training of Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve personnel assigned to their units. Staff Judge Advocates at United States Air Force units are responsible for implementing and supervising the training of Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve personnel assigned to their units. The Commander, Air Force Legal Operations Agency, exercises this responsibility for Individual Mobilization Augmentees assigned to Air Force Legal Operations Agency.

5 AFI MARCH Section C Assignment to The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve Judge Advocate Positions. 7. Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve Judge Advocate Eligibility Requirements. Persons who meet the following requirements may apply for appointment/designation to Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve, in a United States Air Force Reserve unit, as an Individual Mobilization Augmentee, Individual Ready Reserve or to an Air National Guard judge advocate position: 7.1. Graduate from an American Bar Association-accredited law school Be currently licensed and in good standing to engage in the immediate active practice of law before the highest court of a state or territory of the United States, or of the District of Columbia Qualify for an appointment as an officer in the Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve or the Air National Guard, as set forth in Air Force Instruction , Officer Accessions. 8. Applying for Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve Judge Advocate Assignments. Applicants for Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve assignments in the United States Air Force Reserve apply by submitting the documents listed in paragraphs 8.1 through 8.11, as applicable, either electronically or in hard copy, through an Air Force Reserve recruiter or directly to the Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General, 1420 Air Force Pentagon, Washington, DC Applicants for Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve assignments in the Air National Guard apply by submitting the documents listed in paragraphs 8.1 through 8.11, as applicable, either electronically or in hard copy, directly to the Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General or the desired Air National Guard legal office Air Force Form 24, Application for Appointment as Reserve of the Air Force or United States Air Force Without Component Law school and undergraduate transcripts Evidence that the applicant is currently authorized to engage in the immediate and active practice of law before the highest court of a state or territory of the United States, or of the District of Columbia Resumé or military biography Air Force Form 2030, United States Air Force Drug and Alcohol Abuse Certificate A one-page cover letter, discussing the applicant s reasons for applying and qualifications to become designated as a judge advocate in The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve Copies of all Department of Defense Forms 214 and all performance evaluations (for applicants with prior service in any branch of the armed forces) Standard Form 86, Questionnaire for National Security Positions (for applicants with no current security clearance).

6 6 AFI MARCH Voluntary request for permanent suspension from flying status (for applicants on flying status) Air National Guard Statement of Agreement and Understanding (for Air National Guard applicants) Either the Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General or The Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, Headquarters Air Force Reserve Command may request further documentation regarding the applicant s qualifications for appointment and designation as a judge advocate. This documentation may include, but is not limited to, all information required to qualify for an appointment in the United States Air Force Reserve or the Air National Guard, as set forth in Air Force Instruction Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve Judge Advocate Applicant Recommendations and Interviews. Prior to receiving The Judge Advocate General approval for assignment into The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve, all applicants for Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve judge advocate positions (including applicants who are currently serving on active duty as Air Force judge advocates) must obtain a recommendation from a Regular Air Force United States Air Force Staff Judge Advocate or equivalent in the grade of O-4 or above Unless the Staff Judge Advocate is personally familiar with the applicant s performance and qualifications, a formal interview is required. All interviews will be arranged and coordinated by the Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General Staff Judge Advocates prepare reports of interview, forwarding them directly to the Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General. Reports must include the Staff Judge Advocate s specific recommendation as to whether the applicant should be appointed into The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve. 10. Processing Applications for Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve United States Air Force Reserve Judge Advocate Positions. Applications for assignment to Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve United States Air Force Reserve positions are processed as follows: The Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General forwards applications, along with a recommendation for approval or disapproval, to The Judge Advocate General for final action. In the case of an application by a Regular Air Force judge advocate, the Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General coordinates with Headquarters United States Air Force Judge Advocate Professional Development Directorate for its recommendation as to approval or disapproval If The Judge Advocate General approves an application for accession to the United States Air Force Reserve, the Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General notifies The Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, Headquarters Air Force Reserve Command that the applicant has been approved for accession as a judge advocate. The Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, Headquarters Air Force Reserve Command then works with the applicant and the Air Reserve Personnel Center to complete the accession process If The Judge Advocate General disapproves an application for assignment to an United States Air Force Reserve position, the Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General notifies the applicant of the disapproval.

7 AFI MARCH Processing Applications for Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve Air National Guard Judge Advocate Positions. Applications for assignment to Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve Air National Guard positions are processed as follows: Upon receipt of an application from National Guard Bureau Officer Programs Office for assignment to an Air National Guard position, the Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General coordinates the application with the Air National Guard Assistant to The Judge Advocate General for recommendation for approval or disapproval, and then forwards the application to The Judge Advocate General for final action. In the case of an application by a Regular Air Force judge advocate, following coordination with the Air National Guard Assistant to The Judge Advocate General, the Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General coordinates with Headquarters United States Air Force Judge Advocate Professional Development Directorate for its recommendation as to approval or disapproval If The Judge Advocate General approves an application for assignment to The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve, the Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General notifies the Air National Guard Assistant to The Judge Advocate General and National Guard Bureau Officer Programs Office that the applicant has been approved for designation as a judge advocate. The National Guard Bureau Officer Programs Office then processes the application back to the state for accession If The Judge Advocate General disapproves an application for assignment to The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve, the Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General notifies the Air National Guard Assistant to The Judge Advocate General and National Guard Bureau Officer Programs Office, of the disapproval. The National Guard Bureau Officer Programs Office then notifies the unit that the application has been disapproved. 12. Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve Judge Advocate Assignments The Judge Advocate General is the sole approval authority for determining the designation and assignment of all Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve judge advocates and the approval authority for determining the designation and assignment of all Air National Guard judge advocates, recognizing a state assignment and designation authority also held by state adjutant generals. The Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General establishes procedures for submitting, processing and coordinating assignment and designation requests. In making assignment and designation requests to The Judge Advocate General, the Mobilization Assistant to The Judge Advocate General and the Air National Guard Assistant to The Judge Advocate General consider the specific needs of the unit, the state (when applicable), the overall interests of The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve, and the desires of the individual Under no circumstances will an officer perform the duties of a judge advocate prior to the completion, in its entirety, of the member s accession into The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve.

8 8 AFI MARCH 2018 Section D Procedures for Assignment to Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve Paralegal Positions. 13. Assignment to Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve Paralegal Positions. Enlisted personnel and individuals with no military experience may apply for a Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve paralegal assignment. Air Force enlisted personnel may seek retraining into the paralegal career field from any other career field. Acceptance into The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve and assignment to paralegal positions is limited to those who meet the requirements set forth in paragraphs 14, 15, 16, or 17 as applicable. 14. Applicants Holding Current United States Air Force Paralegal Assignments Eligibility Requirements and Application Materials Regular Air Force enlisted personnel who currently hold the paralegal Air Force Specialty Code and seek assignment in The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve as paralegals must meet the eligibility requirements listed in the Air Force Enlisted Classification Directory. Additionally, enlisted personnel must: Have attained a paralegal Air Force Specialty Code skill level of 5 or higher Have a current physical fitness test score that meets or exceeds standards. (See Air Force Instruction , Fitness Program.) Meet the standards and qualifications set out in Air Force Instruction , Medical Examinations and Standards and Air Force Instruction , Classifying Military Personnel (Officer and Enlisted Be in the grade of technical sergeant (E-6) or below, or accept a reduction to technical sergeant (for applicants for Individual Mobilization Augmentee paralegal positions) Regular Air Force enlisted personnel who currently hold the paralegal Air Force Specialty Code and seek assignment in The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve as paralegals, may apply by submitting the following materials: Air Force Form 1288, Application for Ready Reserve Assignment Military biography or resume At least two letters of recommendation from former or current supervisors. However, if the applicant s current Staff Judge Advocate and Law Office Superintendent are personally familiar with the applicant s duty performance and qualifications, letters of recommendation from the Staff Judge Advocate and Law Office Superintendent must be submitted in lieu of a formal interview (for a total of 4 letters) Last 5 Enlisted Performance Reports/Airman Performance Reports Report on Individual Person indicating that the applicant has attained a paralegal Air Force Specialty Code skill level of 5 or higher Proof of current physical fitness test score that meets or exceeds standards Paralegal Retraining Counseling Acknowledgment (applicants for Air National Guard paralegal positions only).

9 AFI MARCH Applicants may be required to provide further documentation regarding qualifications for assignment as a Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve paralegal. 15. Applicants for Retraining, or for Transfer from Paralegal Assignments in Another Armed Service Eligibility Requirements and Application Materials Air Force enlisted personnel seeking retraining into The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve as paralegals, as well as enlisted personnel from other United States armed services holding the equivalent of a paralegal Air Force Specialty Code seeking transfer into The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve, must meet the eligibility requirements listed in the Air Force Enlisted Classification Directory. Additionally, enlisted personnel must: Have attained a skill level of 5 or higher in the applicant s current Air Force Specialty Code or equivalent Have a current physical fitness test score that meets or exceeds standards (Air Force applicants only). (See Air Force Instruction , Fitness Program.) Meet the standards and qualifications set out in Air Force Instruction , Medical Examinations and Standards and Air Force Instruction , Classifying Military Personnel (Officer and Enlisted) Be in the grade of technical sergeant (E-6) or below, or accept a reduction to technical sergeant (for applicants for Individual Mobilization Augmentee paralegal positions) Air Force enlisted personnel seeking retraining into The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve as paralegals, as well as enlisted personnel from other United States armed services holding the equivalent of a paralegal Air Force Specialty Code seeking transfer into The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve, may apply by submitting the following materials: Air Force Form 1288, Application for Ready Reserve Assignment Military biography or resume At least two letters of recommendation from former or current supervisors Their last 5 Enlisted Performance Reports/Airman Performance Reports or equivalent Report on Individual Person indicating that the applicant has attained a paralegal Air Force Specialty Code skill level of 5 or higher Proof of keyboarding speed of 25 words per minute or higher Proof of score of 51 or higher on the Armed Forces Qualification Test Proof of current physical fitness test score that meets or exceeds standards (Air Force applicants only) Paralegal Retraining Counseling Acknowledgment (applicants for Air National Guard paralegal positions only) Applicants may be required to provide further documentation regarding qualifications for assignment as a Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve paralegal.

10 10 AFI MARCH Applicants From Other Armed Services Who Hold Non-Paralegal Air Force Specialty Codes Eligibility Requirements and Application Materials Non-Air Force enlisted personnel who do not currently hold the equivalent of a paralegal Air Force Specialty Code, must meet the eligibility requirements listed in Air Force Enlisted Classification Directory for assignment to Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve paralegal positions. Additionally, enlisted personnel must meet the standards and qualifications set out in Air Force Instruction , Medical Examinations and Standards and Air Force Instruction , Classifying Military Personnel (Officer and Enlisted). They must also be in the grade of E-6 or below, or accept a reduction to E-6 (for applicants for Individual Mobilization Augmentee paralegal positions) Non-Air Force enlisted personnel who do not currently hold the equivalent of a paralegal Air Force Specialty Code, may apply by submitting the following materials: Air Force Form 1288, Application for Ready Reserve Assignment Military biography or resume At least two letters of recommendation from former or current supervisors The last 5 of their non-air Force branch of service s equivalent to Enlisted Performance Reports/Airman Performance Reports Proof of score of 51 or higher on the Armed Forces Qualification Test Proof of typing speed of 25 words per minute or higher Paralegal Retraining Counseling Acknowledgment (applicants for Air National Guard paralegal positions only) Applicants may be required to provide further documentation regarding qualifications for assignment as a Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve paralegal. 17. Applicants with No Prior Military Service Eligibility Requirements and Application Materials Applicants with no prior military service must meet the eligibility requirements listed in the Air Force Enlisted Classification Directory for assignment to Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve paralegal positions. Additionally, enlisted personnel must meet the standards and qualifications set out in Air Force Instruction , Medical Examinations and Standards and Air Force Instruction , Classifying Military Personnel (Officer and Enlisted) Applicants with no prior military service may apply by submitting the following materials: Air Force Form 1288, Application for Ready Reserve Assignment A civilian resume At least two letters of recommendation from former or current supervisors in their civilian work Proof of score of 51 or higher on the Armed Forces Qualification Test Proof of keyboarding speed of 25 words per minute or higher.

11 AFI MARCH Paralegal Retraining Counseling Acknowledgment (applicants for Air National Guard paralegal positions only) Applicants may be required to provide further documentation regarding qualifications for assignment as a Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve paralegal. 18. Applying for Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve Paralegal Positions Individuals submit applications for Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve United States Air Force Reserve paralegal positions (Individual Mobilization Augmentee and Unit program) through any Air Force Reserve recruiting office Individuals submit applications for Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve Air National Guard paralegal positions directly to the desired Air National Guard unit. 19. Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve Paralegal Applicant Interviews. Prior to receiving approval for assignment to a Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve paralegal position, applicants must complete an interview, unless the applicant holds a current United States Air Force paralegal assignment and the Staff Judge Advocate and Law Office Superintendent are personally familiar with the applicant s performance and qualifications, in which case an interview is not required but additional letters of recommendation from the current Staff Judge Advocate and Law Office Superintendent are required in accordance with paragraph above. 13 AFI MARCH Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve Paralegal Assignments The Judge Advocate General is the approval authority for determining the assignment of all United States Air Force Reserve paralegals. The Judge Advocate General may delegate this authority. The Air Force Reserve Command Paralegal Manager reviews assignment recommendations and recommends approval or disapproval to the Mobilization Assistant to The Judge Advocate General, in coordination with the Individual Mobilization Augmentee to the Senior Paralegal Manager to The Judge Advocate General and Senior Paralegal Manager to The Judge Advocate General. To the extent possible, E-7 and below paralegals should be assigned to the installation-level office closest to their Home of Record to optimize core training and provide needed support and to minimize travel expenses to the member and to the Air Force United States Air Force Reserve Paralegals submit requests for change in assignment to The Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, Headquarters Air Force Reserve Command, with a copy to the Law Office Superintendent at their current unit. The Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, Headquarters Air Force Reserve Command coordinates with gaining and losing units. The Air Force Reserve Command Paralegal Manager then recommends approval or disapproval to The Judge Advocate General or designee, through the Individual Mobilization Augmentee to the Senior Paralegal Manager to The Judge Advocate General, the Senior Paralegal Manager to The Judge Advocate General, and the Mobilization Assistant to The Judge Advocate General For Air National Guard Paralegals, the Air National Guard Paralegal Career Field Functional Manager reviews assignment recommendations and recommends approval or disapproval to The Judge Advocate General or designee, in coordination with the Air National Guard Assistant to The Judge Advocate General and the Senior Paralegal Manager to The Judge Advocate General. Section E Additional Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve Management Policies. 23. Judge Advocate Air Force Specialty Codes and Duties; Wear of Judge Advocate and Paralegal Badges Judge advocates assigned to The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve may hold only a judge advocate Air Force Specialty Code (51JX). They may not hold a secondary Air Force Specialty Code in any other career field. Never award a judge advocate Air Force Specialty Code as an individual s secondary or tertiary Air Force Specialty Code Judge advocates may not be assigned to duties other than those of a judge advocate, except with The Judge Advocate General s express written permission Only designated judge advocates assigned to The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve who have graduated from the Judge Advocate Staff Officer Course or an equivalent in-residence sister Service basic judge advocate course, may wear the judge advocate badge. Former judge advocates who have transferred to other career fields may not wear the judge advocate badge at any time unless specifically approved by The Judge Advocate General to do so.

14 14 AFI MARCH Retired judge advocates whose last duty assignment prior to retirement was as a member of The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve may wear the judge advocate badge on their uniforms when otherwise authorized to wear any Air Force uniform combination on which judge advocate badges may be worn Paralegals refer to the Career Field Education and Training Plan for guidance on wearing the paralegal badge. 24. Certification of Compliance with Applicable Rules and Standards Judge advocates and paralegals assigned to The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve are required to complete annual certifications of their compliance with various professional standards. The Judge Advocate General periodically publishes policies setting forth these requirements The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve judge advocates and paralegals update the information in their official biographies and reflect the date of the last update at the same time they complete the certifications required by The Judge Advocate General, or when information reflected in the biography has changed, whichever is sooner. Personal contact information in the United States Judge Advocate General s Corps Roster database is also updated, at a minimum at these times Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve judge advocates and paralegals who fail to comply with applicable certification requirements are subject to removal from assignment to The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve or other administrative action Judge advocates and paralegals assigned to The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve shall have ready access to the Air Force Portal, United States Judge Advocate General s Corps Roster, and other Air Force computer systems requiring Common Access Card authorization. 25. The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve Force Development Teams The Judge Advocate General convenes annual United States Air Force Reserve Force Development Teams, which will be conducted in accordance with written procedures, policies, and applicable directives. The Judge Advocate General appoints all Development Team members. For United States Air Force Reserve paralegal Development Teams, the Individual Mobilization Augmentee to the Senior Paralegal Manager to The Judge Advocate General and the Air Force Reserve Command Paralegal Manager shall serve as members, in addition to any other members appointed by The Judge Advocate General. Full Development Team results, including scores, will be reported directly to The Judge Advocate General through the Air Reserve Component Advisor to The Judge Advocate General In the event of any force-shaping action, Development Team results may be used to assess and determine any appropriate personnel actions. These actions will be in compliance with other personnel policies and procedures. 26. Removal or Suspension from Assignment to The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve. The Judge Advocate General may remove or suspend a member from assignment to The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve for cause or when, in the exercise of discretion, The Judge Advocate General determines that removal or suspension is in the best interest of the Air Force.

15 AFI MARCH Termination of Assignment to The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve Termination of assignment to The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve occurs when any of the following events occurs: The Judge Advocate General removes the member from assignment to The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve (see paragraph 26) (Judge advocates only) The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve member retires, resigns, or separates from the Air Force (Paralegals only) The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve member retires or separates from the Air Force, or does not re-enlist upon the expiration of the member s term of service Termination of assignment to The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve has the following effects for judge advocates: The member s primary Air Force Specialty Code is deleted; refer to Air Force Instruction , Classifying Military Personnel (Officer and Enlisted). Never award a judge advocate Air Force Specialty Code as an individual s secondary or tertiary Air Force Specialty Code The member s designation as a judge advocate is terminated The member will not appear in The Judge Advocate General s annual designation order Except as provided in paragraph , the member may no longer wear the judge advocate badge Termination of assignment to The Judge Advocate General s Corps Reserve for periods of nonperformance as a paralegal can affect a paralegal s Air Force Specialty Code; refer to Air Force Instruction , Classifying Military Personnel (Officer and Enlisted).
