In committee work conducted for prior versions of 1801, it was determined that in order to clearly resolve a firefighters fingers in a gloved hand from a distance of 15 feet, a minimum resolution of 320x240 was required. The SR test has not been fully successful in accomplishing this. Therefore, the technical committee believes it is time to simply require a minimum sensor resolution. If the thermal imager incorporates a visible-light camera or other sensor whose output is overlaid onto, or fused with, the thermal image, the sensor shall be disabled prior to conducting the test so that only the thermal image output is used to influence image recognition test results. Submitter Information Verification Submitter Full Name: Dave Trebisacci Organization: [ Not Specified ] Street Address: City: State: Zip: Submittal Date: Tue Jul 12 12:33:04 EDT 2016 Committee Statement Committee Statement: Response Message: Recently, some thermal cameras have been designed and marketed that incorporate a visible light camera output overlaid on to the thermal image. While the fused image enhances the performance of thermal cameras in ambient light environments, especially for thermal cameras using low resolution FPAs, image enhancement using visible light sensors are not useful in smoke conditions.
