1 Nassau County Legionnaire Volume 88 NOVEMBER 2012 No. 5 Editor: Ken Cadieux (516) kencadieux@optonline.net Web - Site: nassaulegion.org Commander s Report October 25 - the County Commander and I attended a post meeting at the Aviators Post 743. We need to get out into our various posts to see what is going on. First, a quote from American Journalist Bill Vaughn ( ), America a land where citizens will cross the ocean to fight for democracy and won t cross the street to vote in a national election. Remember Election Day and exercise your franchise in may be the most important election in our Country s history even if you have to cross the street. Second, George Washington said The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive veterans of early wars were treated and appreciated by our nation. Let us show the veterans of the current conflict our support by participating in local Veteran s day parades and activities. I salute all of Nassau County Legionnaires and Veterans. And lastly, an anonymous quote On Thanksgiving Day, all over America, families set down to dinner at the same moment halftime. Whatever you do this Thanksgiving may it be in the best of health surrounded by your family and friends. Joe Reale, Sr. Nassau County Commander SECOND DIVISION REPORT During the month of October, the following occurred: October 7- Legislative Breakfast at the Williston Post. This was well worth attending. October 10 - Division 2 had a meeting at Hempstead, Post 390. Seven posts were represented. The highlight of the month was at my own Post, Hempstead Post 390. We got a charter for Sons of the Legion. Good luck Squadron 390. Frank Neal, 2nd Division Vice Commander 3rd DIVISION REPORT Fred Neilsen, Commander One of the most heartening aspects of my good fortune to serve as 3rd Division Commander is the opportunity it gives me to see the Legion in action at the local level. Especially at installations I am able to speak with aging Legionnaires and their Families as they speak nostalgically of their time in uniform as a unique time in their lives. It is an inspiration to hear the way their love of Country informed their service to Community through the American Legion. In addition to the calls and s that Reggie Butt, Willibe Wilson and I have made, I want to take this opportunity to focus attention on the importance of all 3rd Division Posts to show their face of loyalty and their Legion commitment by making your payment for the Department Commander s Dinner scheduled at the Williston Post on Nov 14 at 7PM. Make your payment to Reggie tonight if you have not already done so. Military Ball/ Post Commanders Night Frank Colon, Jr. Chairman I handed out the letters announcing this great event. We will be at Leonard s of Great Neck on February 16, 2013 from noon to 5:30 PM. The cut off date for tickets will be February 2, October 17 - Installation of William Bradford Turner at Post 265. I met two young ladies there who attended Girl State this year. They shared their experiences and the enjoyable time they had. October 21- I am a Legion Rider from the Elmont Post 1033 and together with 4 other riders, we went to a fundraiser for Breast Cancer in Freeport. October 23 - I attended the 10th District Meeting held at Hempstead Post 390. Please return the pageant information form along with your check to me: Frank Colon, Jr, Chairman 85 Cleveland Avenue, Rockville Centre, NY Home Phone: Come and enjoy your day with our County Commander

Ransom, PCC, 229 Brown Ave, Hempstead, NY MIA/POW REPORT On Dec.1, 2011, the responsibility to account for missing U.S. personnel in Iraq transferred from the U.S. Central Command to DPMO. In accordance with the Missing Service Personnel Act, the current number of personnel missing from operations in Iraq is six two service members from Desert Storm; and one service member and three DoD contractors from Iraqi Freedom. DPMO is not only responsible for accounting for service members missing from past conflicts, it also provides policy and oversight of efforts to account for and recover personnel, such as Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who have become separated from their units during more recent actions. This includes the rescue, recovery, and reintegration of captured or missing personnel through diplomatic and military means. DPMO works to ensure that personnel accounting policies address the challenges of accounting in modern conflicts, including properly training and accounting for the increasing numbers of DoD contractors and civilians who accompany the military force. Much of the emphasis for current personnel recovery focuses on preventing or preparing service members, civilians and contractors for isolation, and training to provide proper response in the event that they are captured. Improvements in technolog y, comprehensive planning, training and education, and improved command and control have all combined to form a rapid, well organized response to isolating events. DPMO continues to ensure lessons learned during current conflicts are incorporated into future capabilities. The policy of the United States, to never offer remuneration for the return of captured personnel, serves as a deterrent to hostage-takers and is one of the keys to protecting our service members Adjutant s Report Angelo Grande I attended the Installation at the Robert H. Spittel Post #1285, the Legislative Breakfast which was held at the Williston Post #144 and the 10 th District Meeting that was held at the Hempstead Post #390. I went to the VA Hospital at Northport to take some photos to show what Frank Colon does at the VA. I also attended the 10 th District Meeting. There is still much work to be done on the Legion Power Point presentation that I am working on. I started to take pictures of the Legion Staff and the photos of the Committee Chairs. I would appreciate the help of any Legionnaire who is computer literate to assist me with this project. The housing forms are in and will be distributed at the County Meeting. The Mid-Winter Conference will be held at the Desmond Hotel in Albany from January 24 t -27 th. Please send the forms in as soon as possible. LEGISLATIVE REPORT REGINALD BUTT I received the Department Legislative Pamphlet from the Department of New York Legislative Chairman Joseph Barry, I will be sending each post a copy. This pamphlet details the Departments goals for the Legislative Program for this legion year. Post Commander should address this to their membership and give the pamphlet to the Post Legislative Chairman. A copy of this pamphlet was given to all the Legislators who attended the Legislative Breakfast on 7 October SUPPORT FOR TROOPS ON ACTIVE DUTY REGINALD BUTT, JR. PCC I have a list of names to sent packages to and I will be packaging boxes starting in next month. Don t stop donating items we can use them to support the troops, the visits to Northport and for the Stand Downs. As I reported last month a member of the Williston Post #144, Mike Frisolo has collected and donated monies but two checks had to be turned in to Williston Post #144 as the checks were made out to them, They have sent me a check for $450 which I turned in to the Treasurer. If one man can collected over $1200 in two months other can follow his example. These monies can be used for support of the troops, rehab and also to support the Wounded Warrior program. The Wounded Warrior program is the National Commander project this year.

3 LEGISLATIVE BREAKFAST REGINALD BUTT The Legislative Breakfast was a success, we had eleven legislator address those in attendance. I am a little disappointed on the participation of the posts and legionnaires. At one time we had 250 to 300 people attend the breakfast now we were down to 114, with some that bought tickets did not show up. I had one whole table empty as the post that purchased the 10 tickets did not show up. The financial report has been submitted to the Treasurer and the Finance Committee. I was tasked by the budget to make $800, we came out with $ The $ over budget will be transferred to the Unallocated Fund. We had 33 bottles of donated to the raffle and I want to thank the 19 posts and individuals that donated them. Both Suffolk and Queens County Commanders stated they thought our Legislative Breakfast was terrific and had only word of praise. I want to thank everyone that came and or worked at the breakfast. HOMELAND SECURITY REGINALD BUTT, JR. PCC CHAIRMAN Each day I read in the papers or hear on the different news media about terrorist acts. Most of these are homegrown terrorists, which means we have to be alert and be observant. The Department of Homeland Security is telling everyone to be on the alert as they are tracking different reports or supposed treats. At present there is no specific treat in the United States but the potential is there. With the failed attack on the Financial Center in New York we need to be extra alert as the homegrown terrorists could start up at anytime. There are many treats of action against American missions or companies overseas that deal with Americans, these treats can hide what is being planned in the United States. If you see something that looks out of place or individuals acting suspicious, report it. Remember, Terrorism has many formal definitions. In most it involves illegal activity, including use of force or violence directed against the civilian population. It is intended to coerce or intimidate a government or civilian populations or noncombatants in furtherance of terrorist political/social objectives. Terrorism can be domestic, international, state-sponsored or loosely affiliated. The bottom line is ALWAYS BE ALERT AND IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING. UVO HOMELESS VETERANS STANDDOWNMONDAY NOVEMBER 19, 2012 FREEPORT RECREATION CENTER 9 AM TO 3 PM COME ON DOWN AND LEND A HAND! ALL VOLUNTEERS WELCOME. DEPARTMENT COMMANDERS VISITATION DINNER REGINALD BUTT The Department Commanders Visitation to Nassau County is on 3 November The cutoff date is this weekend. The dinner will be at the Williston Post #144, 730 Willis Ave., Williston Park, NY starting at 7 P.M. and ending at 11 P.M. the cost will be $50 per person and the dinner will be served family style with salmon in dill sauce, sliced roast beef, roasted red potatoes with string bean almondine. Open bar and cake and cookies with coffee and tea. As of this date I have only sold or reserved 102 Tickets with 19 Guest of the County for 121 persons planning to attend. I feel ashamed of the posts and legionnaires for such a lousy showing. This dinner is to honor our Department Commander and with 54 post in the county we have only 19 posts participating. We have always had 150 or more, sometimes over 200 people attending this event. We claim the title Empire County of the Empire State, that is laughable with the turnout and poor participation. With this type of response I can see why we are falling behind in membership. One hand helps the other and there are events we should be participating in to be the Empire County. I have tickets with me tonight or contact me after the meeting to reserve tickets and get me the check ASAP. On 3 November we will be hosting the Commander and his group to breakfast at the Majestic Diner on Old Country Road at 8 A.M., everyone is welcome to join us at your own expense. After breakfast we are going to the Cradle of Aviation for a tour at ten o clock, cost of tour is $7.50 (I will collect the money and make one payment as requested by the museum). After that tour we will go to Eisenhower part to the Veterans Mall and then the 9/11 Memorial. The Commander and his group will have the remaining time before the dinner to relax or do whatever they want. If anyone is planning on going to the breakfast and the tours please let me know. I have told the diner we will have 16 persons and the tour I booked for 15 persons. BOYS STATE PROGRAM REGINALD BUTT, JR. PCC Nothing to report due to no activity at the present time. I am awaiting confirmation on the dates for the program. The tentative dates for Boys State is Sunday 23 June thru Saturday 29 June The post Boys State Chairman should be contacting the schools and setting up interviews with the boys. More information will be available after I attend the executive meeting for Boys State at the Mid-winter Conference in January.

4 CELL PHONE COLLECTION PROGRAM REGINALD BUTT, JR. PCC I shipped out 57 cell phones and accessories. I am awaiting the breakdown on their value. When I get the check I will have the Treasurer split the money between the NEF and Legacy Memorial Scholarship. As I stated before the recycling program has expanded and it now includes these items: DIRECTORY CHANGES THE NEW COUNTY DIRECTORY HAS A FEW ERRORS, PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGES: PAGE 5 DATES FOR MEETINGS CHANGE TO: NOV 16 DECEMBER 14 JAN 18 PAGE 10 & 11 FRED NEILSEN S PHONE # SHOULD BE PAGE 15 KREPPIN PHONE # SHOULD BE cell phones ipods and MP3 Players handheld game systems laptop computers cell phone accessories E-readers GPS handheld units portable hard drives Keep collecting any and all of the above, bring them to the County meeting or if you have a large amount call me to arrange a drop off or pick up. So with spirit and thought I am with you. By now you know that Nassau County Police have lost another young Police Officer. Arthur Lopez, 29 years old and an eight year veteran of the force. He was shot and killed by Darrell Fuller, 33 years old. Fuller got five years for attempted murder, and was paroled in While on parole he was arrested for felony drug sales and drug possession. He was given time served. I ask myself what is wrong with our justice system. What really hurts is Nassau County just buried Police Officer Joseph Oliveri the day before, also killed in the line of duty. Remember them in your thoughts and prayers. Just a reminder we have lost four Police Officers killed in the line of duty within the last 20 months. Maybe it is time for more Posts to consider a Law and Order Program, no matter how big or small. Farewell to my brother officers, our family is deeply saddened with your loss. Children & Youth: Division Commanders please contact me, (you have the address) to let me know of the Children & Youth Activities taking place in your Division so we can report them and give you appropriate recognition for them. No further Children & Youth Report at this time. Fred Neilsen, Chairman PAGE 39 ALT CTY REP : GREGORY FALING ALL PAGES AFTER 61 SHOULD BE RENUMBERED FROM 62 TO 97. ANY FURTHER CHANGES WILL APPEAR IN THE COUNTY LEGIONNAIRE AS THEY ARE RECEIVED. IF YOU SPOT ANY ERRORS LET ME KNOW: KEN CADIEUX POWELL AVENUE, ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY Americanism Report At our last County Meeting, I reported to you that Certificates of Appreciation for their support of the 2012 Four Chaplains Ceremony were being presented in Glen Cove. Those Certificates were presented in conjunction with a City Council Meeting with the Mayor of Glen Cove participating in the Presentation. The example of the highest in American soldierly virtue and dedication to duty on the part of the Four Chaplains as an ongoing inspiration justifies its being reported as part of this Americanism Report. Division Commanders please contact me, (you have the address) to let me know of the Americanism Activities taking place in your Posts so we can report them and give you appropriate recognition for them. I will be sending you encouragement s for activities and my offer of help in conducting your Americanism Activities should you need it. Fred Neilsen, Division Commander
