1 Welcome to High Adventure Troop 45 Boy Scouts of America Theodore Roosevelt Council Welcome to the Boy Scouts and Troop 45, Mineola Troop 45 is one of the oldest and certainly the finest Troops in the United States today. Our troop has offered an exciting program for boys ever since it was formed in 1921 over 90 years ago. We are proud of our impressive record of over 125 Eagle Scouts. We are an organization of boys leading boys under the careful oversight of our Scoutmaster Mr. G. We promote leadership and character development in the Scouting program through the use of outdoor activities such as: hiking, bicycling, camping, canoeing, rafting, rock climbing, backpacking and many other fun activities. We invite you to get involved with our Troop. Enclosed are some forms so we might get to know you and your family a little better. They will need to be filled out in full and signed before your son can be accepted into the Troop. We have regular troop meetings on 7:30 pm and we have an outdoor activity at least once a month. During the troop meetings the Scouts learn many skills to better prepare themselves for the wonderful outdoor adventures they will undertake. 2 Welcome to Troop 45 Registration information Complete official BSA application Complete Troop 45 Family information form Complete Parts A & B of the Annual BSA medical form and submit a copy of the scout s insurance card. Submit all paperwork with a registration fee of $100 made payable to Troop 45, BSA Registration fee includes registration with council, insurance, a Troop 45 hat, neckerchief and two class B t-shirts. Uniform information: Tan short sleeve Scout shirt (remove Webelo badge, Webelo colors, pack and den numbers. Replace Pack number with tan and green 45 patches. Place Arrow of Light badge centered below the left shirt pocket. If earned, place religious knot centered above left shirt pocket. Green Epaulets Green Scout Socks Green Scout Pants/shorts (Zip-off pants) Boy Scout neckerchief slide Boy Scout belt Boy Scout Handbook Hiking boots All items above can be purchased at Robert s in Mineola, the Council Scout shop in Massapequa, or Tent City in Hempstead. Scouts must be in FULL CLASS A UNIFORM, including Scout pants and boots, at all meetings and Troop events unless otherwise specified. Meetings: Troop 45 meets as a whole every Tuesday night at the First Presbyterian church on First and Main Street in Mineola from 7:30-9PM with the exception of Tuesdays when there is no school and during July and August. Each Scout is responsible to pay $1 dues at each Scout meeting Your son s patrol will have its own individual meetings which will be planned by his patrol leader. Monthly Outdoor Activities: Troop 45 holds monthly camping trips/outdoor activities. Specific information regarding these activities will be made available to your son as the activity is approaching, while dates can be found in advance on the Troops online calendar. In addition to monthly camping trips, the Scouts will be attending a week long summer camp in early July. All information is conveyed to you thru your son, however, you should consider attending monthly committee meetings and arriving at 8:45 to pick up from meetings as announcements of upcoming events and activities are made at this time.

3 Code of Conduct Mission Statement Troop 45 -Mineola, New York We the members of Troop45 Scouts, Parents and Volunteers have a shared responsibility to each other and to the greater community by continuing to build an organization that is safe, respectful and above all fosters the principles of Scouting. Honor, Integrity, Respect are the core values that built Troop 45 and it is our duty to continue to uphold this legacy through our actions and words and by abiding by our code of conduct. Our code of conduct is our promise to each other that we respect and value each other and we will strive to conduct ourselves appropriately individually and as a troop All members of the Boy Scouts of America are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the principles set forth in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Physical violence, hazing, bullying, theft, verbal insults, threats, unwelcome jokes and or physical contact, derogatory comments, teasing or other offensive action and drugs and alcohol have no place in the Scouting program and may result in the revocation of a Scout s membership in the troop. Along with our mission statement for Troop 45, we kindly request that you follow the guidelines as established by The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) in regards to protecting our youth under our care. These policies are primarily for the protection of its youth members; however, they also serve to protect adult leaders and parents that may interact with scouts other than their own. 4 Additional Requirements of Membership Troop 45 Fund Raising Troop 45 -Mineola, New York Unlike a lot of youth organizations (including other Boy Scout units), Troop 45 does not depend on a yearly fee that parents are charged for their son s participation. Troop 45 believes that a Scout should be able to pay his own way and we finance our program through our two fund raisers (Holiday Wreath Sale and Pancake Breakfast) and the Scout s weekly dues. Each requirement is very important to the health of the Troop s Treasury and participation is not optional. Holiday Wreath Sale This is the Troop s #1 fund raiser and as such is of major importance to the financial well being of our program. Each year in consultation with the Green Bar a minimum number of pieces sold requirement is set for the Scouts. Once the Scout reaches this goal he qualifies for Scout Bux for summer camp (which returns to the Scout about 50% of the profit on his sale) as well as other perks. The rest of the profit from his sale goes into the Troop Treasury and is spent on that Scouting year s activities, directly benefiting those that raised the money. Father s Day Pancake Breakfast The Pancake Breakfast serves two purposes. First it is a great way for the surrounding communities to see Troop 45 in action. Second, it is a fundraiser for our Troop and helps defray the cost of Summer Camp over and above what we charge the Scouts. Like the Wreath Sale, minimums are established and additional Scout Bux can be earned and like the Wreath Sale participation is not optional. It is expected that every Scout carries his own weight and not only sells tickets and placemat ads but participates on the day of the event. Weekly Dues Every Scout is required to pay $1 in dues each week there is a Troop Meeting. By keeping the dues at $1 (where they have been for many years) each Scout has the ability to earn his own dues money by doing chores around the house, returning soda bottles, or in some other way agreed to by his family. In this way the Scout is paying his way and perhaps contributing to his knowledge of the 9th point of the Scout Law A Scout is Thrifty. Participation - While participation in these three areas is very high, every year there are a couple of Scouts who either don t make their minimums or who sell nothing or who severely in arrears with their dues. The Troop Committee felt that it was not right for those that don t contribute to reap the benefit of the other Scouts and their families hard work so the following policies have been voted on by the Troop Committee: All Scouts are expected to follow the guidelines for Pancake Breakfast sales and meet minimum ticket/placemat ad sale requirements. All Scouts are expected to meet the minimums established by the Green Bar for the Wreath Sale. The Troop Committee has voted that there will be a fee/penalty accessed per Scout for each Scout who sells less than the established piece minimums plus there will be no Scout Bux issued nor discount for summer camp (see appropriate fund raising packet for details). It is the Scout s responsibility to keep his dues up to date and at the Scoutmaster s discretion being in arrears with dues or non-participation in the Troop s Fund Raising activities will be considered a reason to deny that Scout s participation in trips including Summer Camp or High Adventure Programs or Scoutmaster Conferences. We have a very big Troop at the present time in large part because we are an active Troop. We are an active Troop because we have the financial ability to go on trips and participate in outings that our Scouts find fulfilling. As the Scout Oath charges each Scout, On my honor I will do my best to do my duty. Every Scout has a duty to support their Troop program to the best of their ability and every Scout and Scout Family should have the expectation that his fellow Scouts will do the same.
