1 Vol.41 Vol. 41 Issue Issue 29 5 May 2008 February 2011 The 2011 Seven Seas Gala was truly an energetic and fun evening and a great time was enjoyed by all who attended including our future leaders, the Sea Cadets! The friendly greetings by lovely hostesses, and the elegant cocktail reception, all led to a beautiful ballroom setting with a cool ambience which foretold what a fine evening it was going to be. including an excellent meal beautifully served. Our hard working ball Committee headed by Lynn Drucker and Dick Taylor outdid themselves. So did the staff of the Westin. Special guests Congressman Allen West and wife Angela and keynote speaker and SOUTH- COM Chief of Staff Major General (Select) Juan G. Ayala and wife Diana blessed the evening with friendliness and charm and sincerely expressed having a very enjoyable evening as did Rear Admiral Baumgartner and the other 20 active duty military who attended. Congressman West (Army LTCOL Ret.) was unexpectedly taken with the traditional navy introductions and flourishes orchestrated by LCDR Alan Starr and the Sea Cadets, which was then followed by his, the Admiral s and the General s observation of the outstanding performance of the Sea Cadet drill team. One of my privileges for the evening was to introduce Coast Guard Captain Rick Kenin, Commanding Officer of CG Air Station Miami. He then presented LCDR Starr with an award from National Sea Cadet Headquarters as the Regional Director Recruiter of the Year for 2010 one of only two such awards granted out of the 62 regions. In addition to the Spruance and Radford units here in Ft. Lauderdale, LCDR Starr is also responsible for 7 other units in South Florida. The music of the excellent band and singer stimulated immediate post ceremony dancing. Earlier in the evening I had also asked the Congressman if he would make some remarks to our attendees. As is his wont he was graciously responsive. As a new member of the Armed Services Committee, and knowing his audience, he readily focused on the nation s and the world s need of the sea services to protect and keep open the sea lanes which dominate the world s flow of commerce. General Ayala s keynote comments correctly focused on his combat command experience and the young marines ( 19 year old Corporals and 22 year old 2nd Lts ) who man the front lines and run to the sound of gunfire to confront our enemies. Earlier in the evening the General commented to Chuck Black and me that the commissioning of the USS JASON DUNHAM was the best ceremony he ever attended. He was very gratified to receive a USS JASON DUNHAM Commissioning challenge coin. As usual this past weekend our council members were involved with members of the Broward Council in greeting 2 ships: destroyers USS MITSCHER(DDG 57) and USS TRUX- TUN(DDG 103). The reception was held at Briney s Irish Pub with over a 100 officers and crew in attendance. Our Council s upcoming calendar lists a dinner meeting on February 23rd; plans related to the Ft. Brown, USN, Commander of the Special Operations Command South (SOCSOUTH), opened his remarks with words of appreciation for the Navy League s mission in supporting the Sea Services. RADM Brown said: I am honored to be here, and I want to salute the great work of the Navy League (of Fort Lauderdale). It means a lot to us in the sea services institutionally and your support of our warriors at the individual level is irreplaceable. We are deeply grateful for it and you should be proud of what you do here in the Navy League. Then, he gave us a brief of the history and mission and activities of his command, often referred as engagement bilateral training with partner nation security forces. They are prepared to rapidly respond to crisis with deployable battle staff and other related assigned forces. Also, they conduct intelligence and special operations to disrupt terrorists and illicit trafficking, often through direct support to partner Rudy Oetting and RADM Thomas L. Brown, USN nations or the US interagency. The area of responsibility has 31 countries and 10 territories (from the Caribbean to the tip of South America), with 25 languages, 10 religions and more than 410 million people. The region faces many threats, like terrorism, drug and related terror, illicit narcotics, criminal activities, gangs and human trafficking. There is also involvement in civil affairs to provide humanitarian assistance in the area. RADM Brown remarked that the effective action of his command is possible because of the competitive advantage of the forces in key areas. They are regionally focused with good language training. The personnel are mature, discreet, disciplined and with a low profile. They have a broad range of skills and military capabilities, operate in small units and are trained to live among the people. Due to the sensitivity of the tasks that the Special Forces perform, RADM Brown could not describe these operations with too much detail, but it was an interesting night. 4 SEVEN SEAS GALA CELEBRATING THE SEA SERVICES 5 FEBRUARY 2011 The Seven Seas Gala on 5 February at the Westin Fort Lauderdale was a great success! We were honored to have Congressman and Mrs. Allen West and Brigadier General and Mrs. Juan Ayala, USMC, Chief of Staff at SOUTHCOM as our special guests. The Sea Cadets served at Side Boys and escorted the arriving guests to the cocktail area, which was decorated with a nautical theme. Following the cocktail hour, guests moved to the ballroom, where the arrival of the Official Party was orchestrated by LCDR Alan Starr with two columns of saluting Sea Cadets flanking the entering military guests and Congressman and Mrs. Allen West. Guests included many active duty military from the Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps as well as Navy League members, Naval Academy parents, Sea Cadet Parents, Sea Cadet Staff and Sea Cadets. Performances by the Sea Cadet Color Guard and Rifle Drill Team were spectacular. Congressman West, RADM Baumgartner, USCG, and Brigadier General Juan Ayala reviewed their performance with LCDR Starr. The ballroom was beautifully decorated with huge white orchids and brilliant blue and white linens. Guests enjoyed a delicious dinner with impeccable service and dancing to the tunes of Bob Puccetti and the Taste Orchestra. President Rudy Oetting was an excellent Master of Ceremonies. He introduced Captain Rick Kenin, commanding officer of Coast Guard Air Station Miami, who presented LCDR Alan Starr with the award for Sea Cadet Regional Director Recruiter of the Year. Then, Congressman Allen West delivered an inspiring and patriotic speech to our guests. Following this, Jim Black introduced our Guest of Honor, Brigadier General Juan Ayala, who gave a very moving speech centered around a Marine Corporal who survived the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut, only to perish as a fire fighter at the twin towers on September 11th. The fabulous raffle featured luxury prizes, including a 7 day cruise for two on Holland American Line, won by US Naval Academy parents Jesse and Claudia Vance! Many thanks to our Gala Committee for all the hard work they put into making it such a wonderful evening. 6 United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps 300 SW 25th Street Ft. Lauderdale, FL View from the Bridge January, 2011 The Cadets of Spruance Division and Radford Training Ship began the New Year with a Bang! Our Operations Officer, Gunnery Sergeant Sanchez, USMC Ret. Planned and executed our first Field Exercise as a Survival Bivouac at Snyder Park, in Fort Lauderdale. It was truly an all hands evolution. The Staff and Senior Cadets arrived late Friday afternoon and erected the General Purpose (Medium) tent, set up the other tents, started fire pits, ran electrical power connections, and set up a Command Center area. The Cadets arrived early Saturday morning and were assigned into small squads. The senior Cadets under the direction of Gunny Sanchez, Chief Thompson, X.O. Jorge Perez, LTJG Tim Diener and our other Instructors carefully supervised, as the Cadets were taught classes on the meaning of Survival Training, Safety, First Aid, Water Purification techniques, Lean To construction, and snare set ups, to catch small animals. LTJG Randy Bieszczak, with the assistance of our female staff worked hard to prepare the meals for the 70 plus Cadets and Staff. Dr. Lynn Drucker provided on site medical care as needed, with assistance from our Cadet Corpsmen. The Cadets slept outside, under the stars, many for the first time! Several Cadets had the unique opportunity to join Cadets from the Enterprise Division for Orientation Familiarization flights in a Coast Guard Dolphin Helicopter, piloted by Captain Kenin, the Coast Guard Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Air station Miami at the Opa Locka airport. The Cadets had Seamanship Training at the Coast Guard Station Fort Lauderdale, with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, under the new National Memorandum of Understanding, (MOU). LCDR Starr and X.O. LTJG Perez met with the Officer In Charge of the Coast Guard Cutter Gannet, to institute a training plan that would be beneficial to the Cadets and the Cutter. The Cadets Presented Colors at the annual Four Chaplains Ceremonies at the Fort Lauderdale Coast Guard Station. This is a very moving ceremony conducted annually by the combined Posts of the American Legion remembering the four Army Chaplains who gave up their own life jackets to four soldiers after the midnight torpedoing of the Army troop transport ship Dorchester, off the coast of Greenland in They all went down with the ship singing hymns and prayers. The League Cadets presented Colors for the change of leadership at a Masonic ceremony. LCDR Starr and the Sea Cadets presented Colors at the Installation luncheon of the Broward Council Navy League, on board the Princess Lines Cruise ship, the Pacific Princess. Congressman Alan West was the Guest Speaker, and Captain Scraba, Commander of Coast Guard Sector Miami was the Installing Officer. The Cadets practiced intensely for our Sponsor, the Fort Lauderdale Council s major event, the Seven Seas Gala, to be held Feb. 5th at the Fort Lauderdale Westin Hotel. We ended the month with a fantastic day of fun in the sun at the High Ropes Course, run by Nova University at the Outdoor World complex. Some of the Cadets were very intimidated by the height of the poles, but soon overcame their fears as they climbed the rock wall, climbed up a cargo net, scampered up inside an enclosed tube, and climbed to the top of several platforms at the top of the poles. It was quite an exciting team building and individual confidence builder. Respectfully Submitted, LCDR Alan Starr, NSCC Commanding Officer NAVY LEAGUE NEWS 7
