1 Morgan State University Alumni Association ROTC Chapter Volume I Number 2 July 2012 Michael Bell, Newsletter Editor, 1700 E. Cold Spring Lane, Attn: Soldiers Armory, Baltimore, MD Mailing Address: MSU ROTC Alumni Chapter; P.O. Box 65211, Baltimore, MD Presidents Corner Hello ROTC Alumni! I hope that each of you and your families are in good spirits and are surviving this very hot summer. A number of things have taken place since our last newsletter. I first would like to congratulate LTG (Ret) Arthur Gregg on being selected as this year s Morgan State University (MSU) Honorary Alumnus of the Year. LTG Gregg accepted this honor at this year s MSU National Alumni Luncheon. If you have never had an opportunity to attend one of these, please try and attend one in the future. This is a great event. The chapter has decided to go all out to recruit new members and reclaim old ones! We have set a goal for our chapter to have 100 active members! September is the time for dues renewal and I am asking each of you to sign up and bring in a new member. If each of us can do our part, 100 members will be an easy achievable goal. In an effort to assist in accomplishing this goal, the chapter will be sponsoring a kick-off event on August 25, 2012 at Soldier s Armory. On this date there will be a cookout held to show our appreciation to all of our chapter members. All are welcome and this is a no cost event. Please feel free to bring your family and friends. I am also challenging each of you to bring a new member. We will also use this time to welcome back Bear Battalion students to the beginning of the school year and to introduce them to their mentors. We as a chapter have also decided to make a commitment to our veterans. We are in the process of building a relationship with the Baltimore Veterans Facility located at Argonne Drive and Loch Raven Boulevard, located only a few miles from MSU s campus. Our plan is to form a bond with this organization and its veterans, some of who are former MSU ROTC graduates. Currently, we are in the initial planning stages and will keep you informed as we move forward. In addition, Dr. Joe Ponds, MSU Class of 1968 and former Army Aviator, reached out to our chapter and is offering veterans an opportunity to participate in his Memory Skills Conference. (See attachment). The ROTC program continues to improve under the guidance of the new Professor of Military Science (PMS), LTC Lewis. Fifteen cadets were commissioned as Second Lieutenants this past year. Supporting the ROTC program remains as the primary focus of our chapter. The chapter also participated in a social outing with the MSU D.C. Chapter in June. This event was sponsored by Mr. Thompson, President / CEO of Thompson s Hospitality as a way of showing his appreciation to Morgan State University. The event was held at the Tap Room in Bethesda, MD. There are plans to hold a few more of these events in the future and I hope you will have the opportunity to attend. If you have articles or photos for our newsletter, please feel free to contact me by or telephone. Finally, you will find a survey and membership form attached to this newsletter. Please complete and return promptly. WE NEED YOUR FEEDBACK AND MEMBERSHIP! Thank you for your support and I look forward to seeing you at our next event. Thank you. Mike Bell, President Mike Bell, Chapter President
