3 Publisher s Message Happy New Year Rotarians. Dear rotarians The world over is excited with the new year and the making of new year resolutions after the Holiday Season. For us, Rotarians, we celebrate the renewal of our commitment to serve the communities around us and world over through Vocational Service. Vocational service serves as the Object of Rotary which is a philosophical statement of Rotary s purpose and the heart of all responsibilities of Rotarians. The concept of vocational service is endeared in the Second Object which entreats Rotarians to encourage and foster unprecedented high standards in service through their diverse professions. We, Rotarians, are indeed expected to practice high ethical standards in our engagements in business and professions, recognize the worthiness of all useful occupations and dignify each Rotarian s occupation as an opportunity to serve society. This month is good time for every single one of us to use our professional skills to serve our communities and talk about our vocations in our clubs. This is a great month to learn about the professions of our fellow Rotarians. We could also help a young person to reach a career aspiration, guide and encourage others in their professional development. The list of what we could do through our vocations is endless! Should we do any of these things, we are certainly performing Vocational Service. As the Governor s e-magazine editorial team, we are always delighted to hear from you not withstanding how your clubs are making a difference. As we have always known no project is too small. Impact is made even through small acts of generosity from willing hearts in each club. 4 The year 2018 finds us with a ready plan and raring to go. We have a ready program for the trainings DTTS, PETS and others. Greetings to all Rotarians and happy new year. How time flies! The first half of our Rotary year 2017/18 is gone. As your DG, this first half has been the most exciting period in my Rotary career, I managed to visit all clubs in the District as well as 3 clubs in formation totalling 96 clubs. I found myself in places I have never imagined existed and was amazed by the great projects that Rotarians undertake. However, what I will never forget was the friendship and generosity of the Rotarians in our District, you are truly wonderful. I will remain forever grateful to the Country Chairs Jane in Kenya, Nebeyu in Ethiopia and Francis Butili in South Sudan. I will also remain forever Grateful to the Vice Country Chairs in Kenya, Tabitha Nduta at the coast, George Muyera in Western as well as all AGs who turned up with dedication to ensure a flawless program. A special mention goes to membership coordinator Eric Mwashigadi for coordinating the trip to RC Mpeketoni which I considered the remotest club in our district. I am pleased to say that all 96 appointments went without a hitch and I found all 96 presidents and their teams waiting for me at the time agreed upon. I apologize for being late by over an hour on 2 occasions due to traffic conditions on another 2 other occasions due to an over ambitious plan to visit 3 clubs in different towns in a day. 4

5 FROM THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR Some of our achievements in the year include: 1. Some modest growth in membership in the district even before setting up new clubs. 2. Contributions by about 90% of all clubs to the TRF especially towards Polio Plus 3. Appointments of 10 DGSRs to champion the formation of new clubs 4. The successful TRF recognition dinner in Nairobi with an attendance of over 240 which was graced by RIPE Yinka Babalola 5. The successful hosting of the Women in Rotary dinner, the most exciting and colourful event of the year graced by the greatest women leaders in our country as well an action packed key note speaker PDG Ijeoma Pearl from Nigeria and RIDE Yinka Babalola. 6. The successful RFE visit to Abuja Nigeria. I take this early opportunity to thank all those who organized and participated in all these events, your effort and participation has gone a long way in strengthening our district. We have a ready program for the trainings DTTS, PETS and others, I urge all clubs to ensure that their Presidents Elect attend the PETS and if possible sponsor them to the training. However, the key highlights of the year are as follows. Rotary International President Elect Barry Rassin official visit We start the year with very good news, the most High Profile Guest to visit our District this Rotary Year, RI President Elect Barry Rassin starts his first ever visit to Africa by visiting our District on the first week of February We are awaiting his final itinerary but please prepare for a major welcome dinner around 3 rd February th Feb-18 East African Project Fair This event which is meant to revolutionize the way we do projects in our district will be held in Entebbe Uganda. It will be graced by RIPE Barry Rassin. You can then understand my disappointment that only nine clubs have booked stands to participate out of 96! D9211 has booked 40 booths. I would like more of you to participate please call PAG Mbaabu Mathiu on 15 th to 22nd Feb-18 RFE to Chennai India We have a major outing for Rotarians where about 50 Rotarians have signed out for a week long tour of South India hosted by the DG there. I will be leading the delegation which is open to any Rotarian and their spouses and guests. 3 rd March 2018 Sunshine rally Our annual Nairobi sunshine rally comes up in March and we would like to make it bigger and better. I urge all Rotarians and clubs in the Nairobi zone to come out strongly and support this flagship event. I also welcome Rotarians from the rest of the District to come and benchmark during this events 17 th to 22 nd April 2018 DCA at Enashipai I welcome all Rotarians to the DCA at Enashipai, the last report indicated that only 98 slots were remaining before closing the registrations. This is because the Hotel has a maximum working capacity of 550 guests. I urge all those who have not registered especially leaders to do so n 23 rd to 27 June RI convention Toronto Canada I thank the over 250 Rotarians who have registered for the convention and urge as many of us as possible to register. I wish to thank all those Rotarians who have contributed to the Rotary foundation, however we have many Rotarians who have not given 26.5USD and very many who have not contributedat all, we plan to encourage those who have not yet given USD 26.5 to do so before 23 rd February when we celebrate Rotary s Birthday. We had also given a matching offer of 100 PHfs and we still have about 15 more remaining on a first come first served basis, please take the offer now. Finally I will be meeting all Rotaract Presidents on 6 th January and Rotary Club Presidents on 13 th January where we shall be discussing how to ensure that we finish the year strong. We also urge all clubs to ensure that they get an award at the DCA and these awards will start being listed in the monthly newsletters. 6 PRESIDENTIAL Message Whatever brought each of us to Rotary, we stay because we find value in Rotary membership and believe that our service has value to the world.by building clubs that reflect that world in all its diversity, we will build even more enduring value in Rotary: Making a Difference.. In Rotary, our diversity is our strength. This idea dates back to the earliest years of our organization, when the classification system was first proposed. The idea behind it was simple: that a club with members who had a wide variety of backgrounds and abilities would be capable of better service than one without. In the years since, the idea of diversity in Rotary has come to be defined more broadly. We have discovered that a club that truly represents its community is far better able to serve that community effectively. Looking ahead, it is clear how essential diversity will remain in Rotary: not only to strong service today, but to a strong organization in the future. One of the most pressing aspects of diversity to address in our membership is the age of our members. When you look around at almost any Rotary event, it becomes immediately obvious that the age range in the room does not promise a sustainable future for our organization. Our membership is near a record high, and we are bringing in new members all the time yet only a small minority of those members are young enough to have decades of Rotary service ahead of them. To ensure a strong and capable Rotary leadership tomorrow, we need to bring in young and capable members today. We also cannot discuss diversity in Rotary without addressing the issue of gender. It is difficult to imagine that just three decades ago, women could not join Rotary. Although we have come a long way since then, the legacy of that misguided policy is still with us. Far too many people continue to think of Rotary as an organization only for men, and that idea has had a detrimental effect on both our public image and our membership growth. Today, women make up just over 21 percent of Rotary s membership. While this is certainly a great improvement, we have a long way to go to meet what should be the goal of every club: a gender balance that matches the balance of our world, with as many women in Rotary as men. Whatever brought each of us to Rotary, we stay because we find value in Rotary membership and believe that our service has value to the world. 8 We are half way through the Rotary Year! Half-time What does your scorecard look like? Top of Form What was your attendance record like? Did you do/attend any Rotary projects? Did you visit other Rotary clubs? Did you support the Rotary Foundation? Those who get the most out of Rotary are those who give their time to attend the weekly meetings and other Rotary activities. It is like the biblical truth; give and you shall receive! I am excused from attendance (my years in Rotary (28)+my age (59) is >85 ) and yet I think my attendance this year was in excess of 100%! I have visited many Rotary clubs this year and made new friends and acquaintances. I have hosted friends from the USA and driven around our country for days on Rotary projects. I have given to Rotary endless hours of my very scarce time but I, in return I have received more than I have given! Have you considered joining us on the Rotary Friendship Exchange (RFE) to India in Feb 2018? A RFE is an arrangement where Rotarians from a different country invite and host other Rotarians to their country. All the guest Rotarians (and spouses!) need to worry about for the duration of the RFE is airfare- the hosts ordinarily take care of your accommodation and entire program while in their country. D-9212 was recently hosted on a RFE by D-9125, Abuja, Nigeria. This was a follow-up of a RFE that I was part of to the same District about 5 years ago. The experience of a RFE is worth being in Rotary for! Have you registered for the District Conference & Assembly (DCA) in Naivasha 19 th -22 nd April 2018? Any Rotarian who has never attended one has missed the true essence of Rotary- and there are many such Rotarians! I have not met one Rotarian who attended one DCA and said never again- I think the return rate is over 90%. Make a point to meet up there! Have you supported the work of our Rotary Foundation? Did you support our signature project to eradicate polio from the face of the earth? When your grandchildren ask you the history of that horrible disease Rotarians helped eradicate, what will say? What part will you tell them you played? I will be proud to tell mine that I was part of the fight with my money and my participation. You still have a chance to be part of this defining moment in history for as little as $ 10, $20, $50, $100 or more as you feel endowed. Make the gift today- we are on count-down to make history! Have you considered answering the call by Rotary International under our campaign Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY) to give $ 100? If every Rotarian gave $100, much of the budget of our Rotary Foundation could be met. Could yours be the missing $100? Make this gift your Christmas and/or New Year gift to Rotary! This year I have given to Polio on more than three occasions; I have kept my promise to remain a Paul Harris Society (PHS) member by donating a minimum of US $ 1,000 every year to our Rotary Foundation. If you are a PHS member, have you kept your promise? If you have not considered being a member, would you? This group of Rotarians (noticeable by their blue pin holders inscribed PHS) contribute the most significant portion of the financial support to our Rotary Foundation. You join by merely completing a form that is a promise to support our Rotary Foundation with a minimum of $ 1,000 as long as you can afford. Very few Rotarians make this promise and fail to honour it! You too can! Finally, what does your scorecard on supporting and being part of your club look like? Are you the Rotarian who never attend meetings and is busy criticising the leadership? Are you the Rotarian who keeps complaining of the deteriorating club and yet does nothing to help? Are you the Rotarian who has left the club in debt because you have not met your regular dues? One of the greatest undertakings of being a Rotarian is to be part of the club. Every time I have caught myself wondering whether or not to attend the regular club meeting, I remind myself that this is an undertaking that is central to the success of our organisation! Let us recommit to the fellowship- Rotary was founded on the principles of fellowship! 15 Rotary Club of Nairobi Plant Your Age Tree Event All Rotarians were reminded that the environment has and continues to change due to increased human activities It is with the vision of ensuring a healthy and wealthy environment for all and the mission of promoting and enhancing the quality of the environment through demonstration and facilitation of practices towards sustainable livelihoods that the Rotary Club of Nairobi (RCN) team joined together in a plant your age tree event on 18th of November 2017 at Karura Forest to continue championing for the same. The event marked the importance of tree planting activities in achieving sustainable development goals and fostering education for sustainable development. The event saw the RCN members present plant 200 seedlings on an approved site at Karura Forest. Additionally the RCN entered into a three year agreement with Kenya Forest Service (KFS) Karura that would see KFS maintain the seedling/ saplings for the 3 years. A highlight from a message from Rtn. Dorcas Otieno was that forests form a significant part of the biophysical environment, and the interconnected of nature implies that increasing forest cover results to a better, cleaner and healthier environment this leading to sustainability. The event was held under the Green Rotary Four Way Test banner which was able to be elaborated linking the significance of trees and increasing forest cover. The answers to the Four Way Test plainly revealed that increasing forest cover goes far beyond the natural environment, to address other essential components of a sustainable society such as enhancing the economy, while at the same inculcating societal values of peace, harmony with each other and our natural environment. All Rotarians were reminded that the environment has and continues to change due to increased human activities that have contributed to environmental injustice therefore it is everyone s responsibility to stand up for its defense; exactly what the RCN district family has been doing recommending the continuation of the same towards accomplishing sustainable development vision. 15

16 Rotary D9212 Alumni Women Peace Tables - Kiambaa Ack Church, Kiambu County 21St October 2017 Introduction The work of women building peace from within communities has been largely overlooked in analysis, policy, and practice in Kenya and globally, thus the introduction of women peace tables. Women Peace Tables is an international project that was started in 2015 by two (2) Rotary Peace Fellows. The aim of the project is to hold Peace Tables in conflict or postconflict areas, organized by women. The peace tables offer a platform for women to speak about their role in conflict and peace building, to raise awareness on the demands of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 and to pressure governments and the international community to finally implement the fundamental right of women to participate in official peace building processes. Promotion of peace is one of the Rotary International (RI) objectives, where for over 10 years, RI has facilitated the acquisition of conflict prevention, management and resolution skills by persons living and working in conflict prone areas with the aim of securing homemade sustainable solutions. Rotary D9212 Alumni Association (RAA) Kenya is a product of RI which brings together alumni that have participated in the various activities of Rotary International including study scholarships, exchange programs, club memberships among others. To this end, Rotary Peace Fellows, Kenya (individuals who have benefited from peace study in masters or professional program of Rotary) under RAA organized a women s peace table Kenya. The aim of the peace tables was to give women an opportunity to discuss the prevailing peace situation in the country and identify their role in improving it. This goal came from the background that the process of elections in Kenya illustrates its divisive nature from the perspective of national cohesion, national unity, community cohesion and integration. 16

17 Rotary D9212 Alumni Association Women shared the role they play in their homes, churches and the community as whole in promoting peaceful coexistence. The divide which is largely on ethnic lines seemed to affect women more this time round, despite the fact that, women transcend ethnic affiliations through marriage and the patriarchal nature of kinship among others. Kenya conducted her second election on 8 th August, However, the presidential results were nullified by the Supreme Court. Following the nullification of the presidential results, the country s status of cohesion has significantly deteriorated and women are among the most affected individuals yet their involvement in the peace building process has not been fully harnessed. It is on this background that Rotary Peace Fellows, Kenya implemented proactive strategies to mitigate and respond to the eminent threat of possible violence before, during and after the presidential re-election that were scheduled on 26 th October Objectives 1. The women peace table sought; 2. To open discussions on women s perspective on the status of peace and cohesion in the country following the 2017 general elections and the subsequent supreme court ruling 3. To identify the role of women in improving the peace and cohesion status of the country 4. To share measures that women can put in place to enhance pre and post-election tolerance before, during and after the fresh election Results Women shared the role they play in their homes, churches and the community as whole in promoting peaceful coexistence. Among other roles, nurturing peace came out as a critical role that women specifically play in all aspects of life. They shared how they engage with their families specifically in the evenings when everybody is at home for dinner. Such gatherings have proved beyond dought, to be effective in terms of passing messages to our families one woman said. Rotary Alumni urged the women to use these channels to promote peace since National peace starts in the homes. Further, over 3,000 women were reached with peace messages and encouraged to use the channels close to them to spread peace and cohesion. Rotary D9212 Alumni Association 17

20 VISIT TO KIPTULWA WATER PROJECT BY RC KARENGATA IN NOVEMBER 2017 (1st Monitoring visit) President Esther showing her expertise with the jembe. On the14th of November 2017, President Esther and six members (PP Fam, PP Dan, PP Sammy, Rotarians Jane, Alice and Emily) of RC Karengata visited project 538 at Kiptulwo Primary School. This is a water and sanitation project for the provision of clean water through rehabilitation of two springs and drilling of two boreholes one at the School and Ukwala. The objective of the visit was to monitor the progress of training by Self Help Africa (SHA) who is the local contact of the sponsor club for this project (Rotary club of Ireland, District 1160) the other to ascertain the sustainability of water supply from the springs and the positioning of the wells. We were well received by the Kiptulwo Community who included the Head teacher, Board Members, Local administration, the Public Health Officer, the SHA staff on the ground and some school children. All these later joined us in the tree planting exercise. We had organized the visit to coincide with our tree planting 20

21 The objective of the visit was to monitor the progress of training by Self Help Africa (SHA) who is the local contact of the sponsor club for this project (Rotary club of Ireland, District 1160) the other to ascertain the sustainability of water supply from the springs and the positioning of the wells. Past Lady Rotarian Alice Mugo giving tips on tree planting to the school children who turned up to assist us program which we intended so as to fulfill the DG s challenge on tree planting to Rotary clubs. We received a lot of support and good response from the locals. They assisted us in planting the over one thousand two hundred seedlings. This was at the site as seen above, at the school compound, also around the springs at Tinga juu and Ukwala. The team covered some distances on foot as where the two springs and one well will be drilled, is about two kilometers from the school compound. This will be at Ukwala. This gave us a lot of time to interact with the locals who gave us their story of how they were settled on a part of what used to be the larger Mau forest. SHA has done a lot of training in the area to sensitize the community on hygiene and the handling of water. We were satisfied with the progress of work done and we are well within the timelines set. Below is a picture of the gushing spring at Ukwala where clean water is produced in good volumes. PP Fam is trying to extend a helping hand by carrying one of the 20 litres water jerricans on the slippery slope. This is how the locals carry the water to their homesteads. The spring will be rehabilitated to prevent pollution and contamination of the water as well as facilitate consumption of the same by both human and animals. We planted trees around the spring for preservation of the vegetation and to provide cover and shade. We had a meeting after the visit to wrap up on the issues at hand and agree on the way forward. Since the visit, we have received the hydrogeologist s survey report which we have reviewed and discussed. We are now ready to call for proposals and quotations in consultation with SHA for drilling. This will be our second water and sanitation project after our flagship project at Loitokitok. Next, we are working on the I See Maasai at Narok and AIC Girls Kajiado at Isinya. It was time to leave and here our PP Sammy Ayany (in black Jacket) the Primary contact of the project giving a vote of thanks. 21

22 CHARTER PRESIDENT Profile I am proud to have been elected as the charter president of our club the Rotary Club of Nanyuki which received its charter on 4th December Joseph Wainaina Mwangi a.k.a Joe Wainaina Charter President Rotary Club of Nanyuki I have been a practicing banker for the last 30 years. I am currently working for I&M Bank Ltd and I am the Regional Manager for Central Region and based in Nanyuki, Kenya since January Prior to this I worked in Credit Finance Corporation and Mercantile Finance Ltd. My classification is Banking and Financial Services. I was previously the president elect of the Rotary Club of Nyeri since its charter in 2014 but could not take on the presidential responsibilities as I moved my work station to Nanyuki. I am married to Rosemary Wainaina and we have been blessed with two daughters Samantha Nyaguthii and Shanice Kativi who are both adults. I am a golf enthusiast, an amateur photographer, a blogger and love giving back to society. 23 PLAY FOR POLIO PLAY FOR PEACE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT TOYOYO GROUNDS - Saturday 9th December 2017 Rotary Club of Nairobi that Rotary shall continue to support peace initiatives and other social projects falling within its thematic areas of service. Over the past two weeks prior to the football tournament, Rotary Club of Nairobi has engaged the captains and team members of the football tournament to sensitize them on the message of Peace and End Polio campaign. Although Kenya is now Polio free, there is a need for sensitization as there are still some cases of Polio in our continent and Polio is a disease which is simply a flight away. The campaigns should not stop till the world is Polio free. Rotary and Rotaract Clubs in Nairobi, led by The Rotary Club of Nairobi held a 74 team seven a side football tournament at Camp Toyoyo grounds in Jericho. The Tournament officiated by the District Governor Mr. Peter Mbui brought together over 1200 youth from Nairobi who was playing to promote Peace and also create awareness on Polio. Rotary Clubs around the world, supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, have contributed towards the eradication of Polio across the world. Currently, there are zero cases of polio in Kenya as a result of this initiative. In his message, Mr. Mbui stressed the importance of coexistence especially among the youth who form the majority of Kenya s population. He also stressed The Rotary Clubs also used the opportunity to conduct HIV AIDS awareness using puppeteers who entertained the youth and distributed several hundred booklets. The hotly contested community tournament was worn by Hakati Youth from Makadara while the Rotary category was worn by The Rotaract of Milimani. This tournament, one of the biggest Rotary event of the year 2017/18 marks the beginning of a deliberate campaign to amplify the message of peace and polio and other social issues among the public. 23
