The Seabee Memorial Scholarship Association (SMSA) Scholarship Selection Board diligently reviews the scholarship applications at the headquarters of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Twenty Three, Fort Belvoir, VA One hundred sixty six applications were reviewed for four year scholarships: 69 applicants were from children and 87 were from grandchildren of Seabees or Civil Engineer Corps officers. For the first time, SMSA formally reviewed applications for two year degrees and received ten such applications. A total of nineteen recipients were selected by the board. The CAPTAIN AND MRS. E. BRIAN SMITH Scholarship is awarded to Joshua Villaro of Ewa Beach, Hawaii. This scholarship is valued at $4,000 per year for a total of $16,000. He is the son of Equipment Operator First Class Petty Officer John Villaro who last served at Naval Submarine Base Point Loma, CA, before retiring in Joshua has been recognized at James Campbell High School, Ewa Beach, HI, for academic and athletic accomplishments, including student council, track, and the Principal s List. He volunteers extensively in the community and is a Cadet Airman in the Civil Air Patrol. Joshua plans to study biology at University of Washington, leading to a career as a surgeon. THE CCM ROY E. SCHAEFFER, SVA 136 T H NCB SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to Quincy Banks of La Vergne, Tennessee. This scholarship is valued at $5,000 for the first year, and then becomes a standard scholarship for the last three years. He is the son of Storekeeper Third Class Petty Officer Charyse Daniel, who An additional 55 applications were reviewed as alternates for existing scholarships. Alternate scholarships are awarded if the incumbent recipient is unable to or is no longer eligible to receive a SMSA scholarship. The SMSA and the Scholarship Selection Committee appreciates the generosity of the individuals and organizations that have funded 116 separate scholarships. Most recipients will receive $2,300 this year, an increase of 15% from last year. Particular mention is given to AECOM, CAPT E. Brian Smith, and CCM Roy Schaeffer scholarship donors, where award amounts are larger, due to their special generosity.
