Paul P Haris, the founder of Rotary, has dealt with the question in the following expressions: There are already more than Six Thousand answers to that question and there are many, many more to follow. How do I make that out? There are more than Six Thousand Rotarians in the world and many more to come. Each has his own individual conception of Rotarianism and he will continue to have it even if a brief concise definition of the word be generally accepted. Rtn Afroza Akter of RC Dhaka offered the birthday and wedding anniversary greetings while Rtn Md Abu Kaiser, Secretary of RC Dhaka New City read out the birthday and wedding anniversary greetings for RC Dhaka New City. Rtn PP Kh Badrul Hasan, PHF of RC Dhaka, welcomed all members present of both the Clubs, who later introduced themselves. Rtn PP Mohd Khaliquzzaman, PHF of RC Dhaka introduced his guests from Khulna zone. President Rtn Nasimul Majumder, PHF briefed everyone about the Tree Plantation project held on August 14 th, The President also informed about the upcoming projects namely, School Eye Examination (SEE) project, Rotary Children s Art Competition for World peace on the topic: Our Dream- A Peaceful World, ABCD (Aust-Bangla-Care for Dental) project, sanitary latrines project and tube wells project, details of which were printed in the Weekly Bulletin. Rtn PDG Dr Ishtiaque Abiduz Zaman, PHF of RC Dhaka gave a fantastic talk on membership extension and elaborated on the goals and activities of RI marking some great achievements of Rotary namely, Polio eradication. He emphasized that Rotary has so many areas of service to focus and so much to do for the world, so we need more and more volunteers in the form of more and more Rotarian. In order to attract new members Rotary has to make the projects interesting so more people will feel encouraged to join the movement of service above self. Rtn PP Mahbub Jamil PHF of RC Dhaka New City and former advisor to the last Caretaker Government spoke on the RI theme for this year which is, Be a Gift to the World. He elaborated the RI theme in a beautiful way and highlighted the contributions of illustrious people like Bill Gates, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Haji Mohd Mohsin and others from home and abroad throughout the history which will encourage Rotarians with the RI theme of Be a Gift to the World. Rtn PP Khaliquzzaman PHF of RC Dhaka briefed the Club on the Sleeping Kit Distribution project for 6000 bed kits costing 2 crore takas.. Rtn IPP Shaheed Siddique, PHF of RC Dhaka briefed about the Cancer project of RC Dhaka jointly with National Institute of Cancer Research Hospital (NICRH). The vote of thanks was offered by Rtn Salma Rahman RFSM, President of RC Dhaka New City. She emphasized that we should teach our children the art of giving as Rotary teaches us to learn to give. Minutes of the earlier meeting was passed unanimously. Club Secretary Rtn Barrister Shafayat Ullah PHF announced the date of the next weekly club meeting to be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel, Dhaka at pm. The Club Secretary of RC Dhaka New City also made his announcement of the next meeting of RC Dhaka New City. 4 Rotary Children s Art Competition on Peace Topic: Our Dream- A Peaceful World Competition: The Art Competition will be organized among the school students from Class I to V (age: 5 to 10 years). More than 20,000 (twenty thousand) students from approximately 100 English and Bangla Medium schools of the country the expected to participate in the competition. First Round of the competition will be organized at school premises under the supervision of their Art Departments. Papers will be supplied by us. School authority will select winners from each class. Winners are going to participate in the Final Round. All winners will receive a Certificate of Merit from the Organizer and a session will be organize to brief the children on World Peace. Winners from each school will participate in the final round at the Institute of Fine Arts campus. Champion will be given Rotary Peace Scholarship for One Year worth Tk. 100,000 (taka one hundred thousand only) followed by Tk. 60,000 (taka sixty thousand only) and Tk. 40,000 (taka 40,000 only) for First and Second Runners Up respectively. Apart from that Three Awards will be given per group. All participants will be given Certificate of Appreciation for participation. Award Giving Ceremony: A grand Award Giving Ceremony will be organized participated by the students and their parents where representatives from UN agencies, US AID, DFID, AUS AID, and Save the Children will be invited as guests to brief the audience on World Peace. We are expecting Resident Representative of UN as the Chief Guest of the program. Exhibition and Auction: Three days exhibition followed by auction of the selected paintings will be organized at Drik Gallery. Funds collected from auction will be utilized on Peace Projects. We will invite all rotary club members, corporate personalities and parents of the participants to take part in the auction. Presentation of Paintings: Champion and Runner s up Paintings will be presented to Prime Minister s Office and Rotary Head Quarters, USA. Exhibition Book: An exhibition book will be published on World Peace comprising write-ups on peace along with selected paintings. This book will be presented to Schools Libraries, Foreign Missions in Bangladesh, Bangladesh Missions Abroad, International Organizations working for Peace at the Home and Abroad, Ministries and Important Government Bodies. 7 Who is, or was, a Rotary Ann? - Collected by Rtn Ranjan Neogi Prior to a decision handed down by the United States Supreme Court in 1987, Rotary was a men's organization, and in many clubs, the wives of the members were called "Rotary Anns". With the Court decision in the eighties, and with more women in the professions than ever before, the term "Rotary Ann" began to fall out of favor and clubs of Rotary Anns disappeared. While the name Rotary Ann has not gone completely out of favor, wives are more commonly known as Rotary Spouses or Partners. In 1987, women were admitted to Rotary, and today women are the fastest growing segment of Rotary's membership. Why were wives of male members affectionately called "Rotary Anns"? This designation was never one of disparagement, but rather grew out of an interesting historical occasion. The year was 1914 when San Francisco Rotarians boarded a special train to attend the Rotary Convention being held in Houston. In those days few wives attended Rotary events, and until the train stopped in Los Angeles, the only woman aboard was the wife of Rotarian Brunnier. As the train picked up additional convention-bound delegates, Mrs. Ann Brunnier was introduced as the Rotarian's Ann. This title soon became "Rotary Ann". Since the clubs of the west were inviting the Rotarians to hold their next convention in San Francisco, a number of songs and stunts were organized which would be performed in Houston. One of the Rotarians wrote a "Rotary Ann" chant. On the train's arrival at the Houston depot, a delegation greeted the West Coast Rotarians. One of the greeters was Guy Gundaker of Philadelphia, whose wife was also named Ann. During the rousing demonstration, someone started the Rotary Ann chant. The two petite ladies, Ann Brunnier & Ann Gundaker, were hoisted to the men's shoulders and parade about the hall. The group loved the title given to the two women named Ann. Immediately the same term of endearment was used for all of the wives in attendance and the name "Rotary Ann" was here to stay. Nine years later, in 1923, Guy Gundaker became president of Rotary International. Bru Brunnier was elected president in 1952, 29 years after that. Thus, each of the two original Rotary Anns became the "first lady of Rotary International. "Oklahoma City, Club 29 is responsible for the origin of the Rotary Ann auxiliary organization. OKC Rotarian Virgil Browne's wife, Maimee Lee, proposed this organization to Club 29 in November, 1928, and its acceptance has spread to thousands of clubs throughout the Rotary world.one of the purposes of a Rotary Ann Club is to bring into fellowship the families of the members of the Rotary club. Other objectives include assisting Rotarians in the execution of various club and community projects and uphold the purposes and aims of Rotary. Most chapters meet once a month, usually at the home of one of the members in almost all but the larger clubs. These meetings are devoted mainly to fellowship and to discuss the various projects of the Rotary Ann Club as well as possible assistance to their Rotarians. 9 EARLY CANCER DETECTION IS SAVING LIVES IN SRI LANKA More than 20,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed every year in Sri Lanka, and many of them prove fatal. The Rotary Club of Colombo, Sri Lanka, set out 10 years ago to save some of those lives by establishing the Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Centre. In partnership with the National Cancer Control Programme and the Ministry of Health, the center in Colombo has screened more than 35,000 patients, mostly low-income, and detected more than 7,500 cases of abnormalities that required further investigation. The Rotary Club of Birmingham, Alabama, USA, donated a mammography and ultrasound scanner to the center s breast cancer screening facility.
