1 Rotary District 9820 Issue 7 - January 2012 Rotary Awareness Month N e w s l e t t e r FROM THE GOVERNOR S DESK. January is ROTARY AWARENESS month. Welcome to I hope that your Christmas/New Year was a happy and peaceful time for you all. The New Year provides an opportunity for us all to make personal resolutions, and generally plan for the year ahead, and with January being ROTARY AWARENESS MONTH, we are encouraged to focus on the way in which Rotary promotes itself. How well are we known in our Community, and does that community know what we do? For our clubs to continue to grow, encourage sponsors, receive community support for our projects, and increase and retain our membership, we need to tell the world who we are, what we do, and importantly how we can be contacted. In other words we need to effectively market ourselves. I therefore encourage clubs to develop their own marketing plan. A plan should set out details of how the club intends to promote Rotary, in the coming months, and in the longer term. It should focus the efforts of the club, to ensure that hard - earned funds are wisely spent, and importantly, make certain that that everyone is heading in the same positive direction, and meaningfully involved in the decision making process, as we set out to service our communities, locally and globally. Assistance in preparing a Marketing Plan, can be obtained on the Internet, if required. Table of Contents. DG s Message This is What We Do Leadership Seminar P1 P2 P2 Preparing for the Rotary Year P2 District Conference District Governor Nominations P3 P4 Called to Higher Service P4 Charity Golf Day Shine On Awards P5 P6 Directory Amendments P7 Club Events List In our District, via our Public Relations Chair, Marilyn Cunnington, we have applied for, and been awarded, a Public Relations Grant from Rotary International. This is being currently applied in the print media, and on city and regional radio. As Rotarians, each one of us has a responsibility, to develop a wider understanding of the activities of Rotary, both locally and internationally. Our efforts in this area are vital to Rotary s continued growth, and its level of service. Jill and I wish you a happy and fulfilling year ahead. P8
2 . ROTARY - THIS IS WHAT WE DO. 20,000 patients spanning 28 years of surgical aid Congratulations INTERPLAST on this wonderful humanitarian achievement. A magnificent partnership between the Royal Austalasian College of Surgeons and Rotary. INDIA: With no access to an electric grid, many households in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh rely on kerosene lanterns. Two Rotary clubs in Montana USA have distributed 500 LED lanterns, which are charged by solar panels, in three villages. The clubs funded this project with the assistance of a ROTARY FOUNDATION MATCHING GRANT. DISASTER AID AUSTRALIA (a project of the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills) has shipped aid to the value of $100,000 by air to the typhoon stricken area in Philippines. Working with local Rotarians, Hans Van Dyk ( R.C. Endeavour Hills) will personally oversee the delivery of Family Survival boxes by the Philippines Air Force, and Army. Disaster Aid Australia needs the continued support of fellow Rotarians to replenish our stocks which are now nearly depleted. LEADERSHIP SEMINAR. Planning for the future is critical for any forward moving organisation, and Rotary is no exception, in its need to encourage and develop future leaders. I was therefore delighted when the opportunity arose for all Zone 8 Districts in Australia and New Zealand to be represented at the inaugural Future Leaders Seminar, as an adjunct to the Zone 8 Institute in Brisbane, last November. Our District was represented by: Michael Page - Rotary Club of Sale Central Ian Horton - Rotary Club of Mornington Jeff Smallacombe Rotary Club of Somerville Tyabb. They were joined by invited members from all of the 28 Districts in Australia and New Zealand. Each of these Rotarians felt that the experience was highly beneficial and I congratulate them on their enthusiastic support and participation in this significant initiative. Michael, Ian, and Jeff will give their impressions and a brief overview of the Seminar in the February edition of Latitude 38. PREPARING FOR THE ROTARY YEAR That part of the District training program designed to assist Presidents-elect to plan for their year as President, is not too far away! Later in 2011 Presidents-elect will be invited to register for two events in early 2012: PETS I & II. PETS, of course means Presidents-Elect Training Seminar. Please choose one PETS I event to attend. Presidentselect will all gather for PETS II in Traralgon. You will then be asked to bring your board members and other members of your club to the District Assembly on the day following PETS II. Please note the following dates in your diary: Date Event Who Should Attend? Registrations Sought 4 February 2012 PETS I, Bairnsdale Presidents 2012/13 1/11/ February 2012 PETS I, Trafalgar Presidents 2012/13 1/11/ February 2012 PETS I, Frankston Presidents 2012/13 1/11/ April 2012 PETS II, Traralgon Presidents 2012/13 15/2/ April 2012 District Assembly, Traralgon Club Board members, Chairs and interested members 15/2/2012

A gifted actor and event organiser, Val involved Rotarians and friends of Rotary, in club and Civic programs. the opportunity to be president of the Rotary Club of Morwell in 2004/2005, Rotary s Centenary Year, was the highlight of her membership. A special goal was to see the completion of a BBQ in the Kernot Hall Grounds. this had been a project her brother PP Laurie had planned. Val was born in Metung, but the family moved to Morwell when she was a young girl. She attended Yallourn High and on leaving worked as a receptionist in a doctor s surgery and later with the APM, prior to spending approximately 20 years as the Secretary to the Principal of Morwell High School.
