1 November, Transformers ROTARY DISTRICT 5490 Reach Within to Embrace Humanity Veterans Memorial Dedication Anthem, Arizona July, 2010 November, 2011 November is Foundation Month Photos Mike Spinelli Photography The Veterans Memorial dedication ceremony held on site in Anthem was a memorable event for all in attendance. AS the guests arrived they passed by 140 children, each who held the photo of a local veteran or veteran family member. The Cadets from Sandra Day O'Connor ROTC assisted in seating, standing guard over the Memorial prior to the ceremony start and helping guests find their commemorative veteran pavers. Over 5000 people attended the ceremony, including many flown in by family who purchased commemorative pavers, Anthem and New River residents, some who drove from Tucson after learning of the Memorial, others from around the North Valley. The keynote address was delivered by Major General Louis W. Prentiss, Jr., United Sates Army who reminded the audience of the importance of honoring our veteans and the unique nature of this particular memorial. He noted, "It is different in concept from Arlington (National Cemetary) in that Arlington is a memorial to those who have Given the last full measure. Our memorial here not only recognizes those who have passed on but also those of us who are still living and those who are still serving our country." Congressman Quayle (shown in above photo) also shared his thoughts on the importance of honoring and our veterans and Ryan Owens, Policy Advisor to the Governor on Military and Veteran Affairs, read a letter on her behalf. At exactly 11:11 a.m., as the President of the Anthem Community Council, Craig Boates, dedicated the Memorial, four F-16's from the 308th Fighter Squadron, Luke Air Force Base, thundered over the crowd. "The Memorial will serve to remind everyone who lives in Anthem and visits our city of the sacrifices our veterans have made to protect this Nation's freedom," says U.S. Navy retired Rear Admiral Ron Tucker (member of the Rotary Club of Anthem), project chair. 2 A message from District Governor Sara Jane Feldman What is The Rotary Foundation? I think a little history about our Rotary Foundation will help Rotarians in our district understand what a great and powerful organization we have. In 1917, RI President Arch C. Klumph proposed that an endowment be set up for the purpose of doing good in the world. In 1928, when the endowment fund had grown to more than US $5,000, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International. Five Trustees, including Klumph, were appointed to hold, invest, manage, and administer all of its property... as a single trust, for the furtherance of the purposes of RI. Two years later, the Foundation made its first grant of $500 to the International Society for Crippled Children. The organization, created by Rotarian Edgar F. Daddy Allen, later grew into the Easter Seals. The Great Depression and World War II both impeded the Foundation s growth, but the need for lasting world peace generated great postwar interest in its development. After Rotary s founder, Paul P. Harris, died in 1947, contributions began pouring into Rotary International, and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was created to build the Foundation. Throughout this time, support of the Foundation grew tremendously. Since the first donation of $26.50 in 1917, it has received contributions totaling more than $1 billion. More than $70 million was donated in alone. To date, more than one million individuals have been recognized as Paul Harris Fellows people who have given $1,000 to the Annual Programs Fund or have had that amount contributed in their name. The Polio Plus challenge that Rotarians have undertaken will be met and we will keep out promise to the children of the world that we will eradicate the disease through The Rotary Foundation. We as Rotarians worldwide continue strong support and involvement, will ensures a secure future for The Rotary Foundation as it continues its vital work for international understanding and world peace. Our District Website is a great resource. Check out events, posted articles. There has been a concerted effort this year to keep the website fresh. At a Friday evening ceremony, Mayor Mark Nexsen presented the Governor with a three-coin set London Bridge Rotary coins. This year s coin design celebrates Arizona s centennial. The club produced their first coins for the dedication of the bridge in October of 1971, and has designed and issued a new coin each year since. It is now a well-established Lake Havasu tradition for the club to introduce and begin selling their new coin at the London Bridge Days Parade each October. The success of this ongoing signature fundraising project which been a reliable funding source for community and international projects is source of pride for the club and its members. 4 MEMBERSHIP PDG, Marty Feldman As you induct new members, remember that developing and retaining strong members begins before induction. Consider implementing the Seven Step Membership System, the first three steps we cover now and the remaining steps will be presented in upcoming articles: Step 1: IDENTIFY well qualified members of your community who are professionals, leaders in the community and have a commitment to service. Explore various tools to help in your identification efforts including a members provided suggestion list of potential members. Look at other community organizations such as Chamber of Commerce, cultural organizations, professional and business organizations for individual and or corporate membership possibilities. Step 2: INFORM prospective members of Rotary s International programs and your club s service efforts. Search for information sources such as This is Rotary (001-EN), Rotary Basics (595- EN), and What s Rotary (419-EN) that you could give a prospective member. Need help setting up a club brochure? Consider using one of Rotary International s 3 preformatted brochures where club information can be entered. Step 3: INVITE prospective members to participate in a sampling of the club s service activities and or district programs such as the upcoming USA-Mexico Friendship Conference and Matching Grant Exchange. Use the proposer and a member of the club s Membership Committee to extend the invitation face to face. Become familiar with the procedures contained in How to Propose a New member (254-EN). In the meantime, let me know if you would like me to speak to your club or your club leadership on the subject of membership. Marty Feldman, District Membership Chair. cell , martyfeldman@cox.net First three Steps of Seven-step Membership System Register for 2012 RI Convention Before December 1 Price Increase Bangkok Convention Pending Price Increase An important pending event is just around the corner. On December 1 st the 2012 RI Bangkok Convention registration fee increases from $160/person to $195/person. I cannot think of anyone who wants to miss an opportunity to save $ The 2012 Rotary International Convention offers exotic and exciting memories - waiting to be captured. Past RI Conventions have informed, motivated and inspired Rotarians to REACH HIGHER. The 2012 Convention in Bangkok will exemplify and magnify those goals. Thailand is rich in cultural and spiritual history. It is called the Land of a Thousand Smiles and is a great kingdom. The city and the people of Bangkok are prepared to open their arms and embrace us as we take this once in a lifetime magic carpet ride. The Convention Host Organizing Committee has designed an exceptional program. They have contracted a comfortable venue for the convention sessions, and are providing many exciting activities and pre- and post-tour options. This is a family friendly convention and will provide memories for all age groups. visit the Bangkok Convention section of the RI website Page 4

5 Anthem Rotarians Honor Veterans in a Special Way In early 2009, Anthem Rotarian and retired US Navy Rear Admiral Ron Tucker gathered members from his small town, Anthem, Arizona, to develop plans for a Veterans Memorial. Under Tucker s leadership, a plan was approved by the Anthem Community Council in the fall of 2009 for the memorial to be placed on land in the community park. The design consists of five marble covered pillars of diminishing sizes, dedicated to each of the five branches of the Armed Services, and each with an elliptical opening engineered so that on Veterans Day, November 11, on the 11 th minute of the 11 th hour the sun s rays will pass through the five ellipses and illuminate a mosaic of The Great Seal of the United States. Full illumination of The Great Seal will take place at 11:1 am EVERY Veterans Day. The pillars and Great Seal are set in an honor circle of brick pavers engraved with the names of Veterans. Renee Palmer-Jones, artistic designer, was inspired by a visit to the ancient temple of Abu Simbel in southern Egypt where sunlight illuminates enormous statues of deities on the solstice. She felt it was an age-old technology that would lend a reverence to the Anthem Veterans Memorial structure. Chief Engineer, Jim Martin s, knowledge of celestial and solar observations and his land surveying experience were invaluable in calculating the sun s vertical angle (altitude) and horizontal angle (azimuth) at the Memorial site. As draftsman, Steve Rausch applied the computations through the use of Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software, a three-dimensional view of the project took shape. According to Martin, The position of the sun became the primary design element relative to the placement of the pillars and the elliptical openings that pass the sun s rays through the structures. Commemorative brick pavers inscribed with the names of U.S servicemen and women will form the Circle of Honor surrounding the marble pillars. The Circle will represent an unbreakable border and the pavers will symbolize support for the five pillars. Red brick pavers, white marble pillars and the blue sky represent the American flag. In 2010, Tucker went to work promoting the Memorial and raising required funds for the project. Fellow Rotarian, Liz Turner assisted with a marketing and communication plan, and with the help of her committee, Yvonne Dolby, Barbara Dose and Donna Gloshen, a year later over $110,000 had been raised through donations and the sale of commemorative pavers. The Anthem Rotary Club sponsored a memorial bench ($2,000) and an organization paver ($200). Many of the Anthem Rotarians are veterans, and the Board felt it important to show the Anthem Rotary s support of our veterans. We wanted to join the community in honoring the many sacrifices veterans make for this Nation, tells Ray Norris, Anthem Rotary president. We also couldn t be prouder that two of our Rotarians are volunteering in the leadership of this project, adds Norris. The Anthem Rotary contributed $10,000 to the Pearl Harbor Foundation. It is the only Rotary club in the nation to be recognized on the Pearl Harbor sponsorship plaque. Construction began on the project in July, 2011, and the Memorial was dedicated at a November 11, :00 AM ceremony including state dignitaries and honored Veterans and their families. It is our hope the Anthem Veterans Memorial will honor Veterans in a way that touches the heart of each citizen who visits, says Ron Tucker. As people all over America celebrate a moment of silence at 11:11 a.m. on November 11 starting in 2011, those residents and visitors in Anthem will witness a truly amazing event. It was an honor to serve our country, and it is a great privilege to work on this project, adds Tucker. For more information on the Veterans Memorial project in Anthem and how you may support the Memorial, go to and click on Veterans Memorial. Important Paver Information: Commemorative Veteran pavers may be purchased online ($150) at click on Veterans Memorial, Purchase Paver/ Donate. Those who wish to purchase a paver recognizing a family, organization or business ($200) or to make a donation to the Memorial may do so online, as well. Business and private donation opportunities and recognition are available. How Rotarians May Assist: Rotarians are invited to assist by communicating news of the Anthem Veterans Memorial to the members of their organizations. Rotaries wishing to show their support of Veterans may do so through the Friend of the Memorial donation program or through the purchase of an organizational paver ($200). 7 District 5490 Has a New Rotary Club (ALMOST) The Rotary e-club of Arizona is now forming; charter member applications are now being accepted at What it is: Exactly like a "normal" Rotary club, with one exception: it meets on-line, any time a member is available Perfect for someone who cannot attend a meeting in person (home-bound, no transportation, out of town, scheduling, etc.) Ideal for ex-rotarians who had to leave their Rotary Club because of time or travel pressures Open to world-wide membership What it isn't: A club for people who are able to attend regular Rotary Club meetings (this is taken very seriously!) Competition for your club The new Rotary e-club of Arizona will become LIVE on January 9, Charter member applications are being accepted today at No current members of District 5490 will be allowed charter membership! Chuck Fitzgerald, District 5490 Extension Chair Rotary and the Nobel Peace Prize Rotarian, Ed Mattson E-Club Seeking Charter Members Rotarians Campaign For Nobel Peace Prize I am writing on behalf of PDG 7620, Rob Ketron (the Cliff Dochterman Red Coat Class of 92-93), who enlisted my help in a drive to get the Nobel Peace Prize Nominating Committee to once and for all recognize the outstanding work of Rotary and the Rotary Foundation for 105 years of service. Even most Rotarians are not aware of the hundreds of thousands of community and international projects Rotarians all over the world commit to and complete every year. It is time our story is told! PDG Ketron and I believe there is no other organization or individual in the world more deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize and it's $1.3 million award, than Rotary and the Rotary Foundation. With every Rotarian's effort, we should be able to garner enough support for the nominating committee to take the necessary steps to insure, that after 105 years of global service, Rotary is finally recognized for its work that is beyond exemplary. But we need your support in disseminating the information and ask each Rotary club to take up the challenge by having every Rotarian write his/her legislators. We must make this a global effort. We have made it as simple as possible by using the Internet and have developed explicit instructions on how Rotarians can write their legislators, complete with a "cut and paste" letter already written. All they have to do is look up their legislative contact using the links I provided on the below website (I have made that easy for US-based Rotarians, while Rotarians in other countries will have to do a little more work on their own), and model their letter after the example shown. See: Mr. Ketron's background report on the Nobel Peace Prize can be found at Page 7

This special exception to TRF s usual prohibition of using MG funds to construct buildings is for Rotary years and The results of this test project will be evaluated by the Trustees at the end of that time, to determine if such building should continue.
