Scholarships Scholarships are a great way to help fund your study abroad program. ISA awards approximately $140,000 in scholarships to participating students each year through the ISA scholarship program and through several of our host universities. Students who are participating in ISA programs can apply for these scholarships directly through ISA.

SCHOLARSHIPS Dr. Carlos E. Castañeda Memorial Scholarship Carlos E. Castañeda, the grandfather of ISA s founder, immigrated to the United States from Mexico with his family when he was in the sixth grade. Through immersion he quickly gained fluency in English and excelled in school. Orphaned at the age of 14, Carlos became the head of the household. While caring for 4 sisters, he continued to educate himself and eventually enrolled in the University of Texas at Austin in 1917 where he earned his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. In memory of Dr. Castañeda, ISA offers $58,000 annually in scholarships to be used toward ISA programs. These merit and financial need-based scholarships assist students from affiliated universities with the expenses of studying abroad. Winners of this scholarship will have the opportunity to participate in the Correspondent Internship, which offers the recipient the chance to take photos and add content to the ISA Student Blog as a Castañeda Correspondent. Additionally, students may become part of the offices abroad, based on the need of their particular ISA office. Qualifying applicants may also apply for other scholarships, but students will only be awarded a maximum of one ISA scholarship. 12 x $2,000 for Fall Programs 12 x $2,000 for Winter/Spring Programs 2 x $2,500 for (Fall-start) Year Programs 2 x $2,500 for (Spring-start) Year Programs Eligibility Requirements In order to apply for these awards, students must meet the following criteria: Must be from an ISA-affiliated university. Michaela s experience was cut short when she tragically lost her life in a hiking accident in the mountains of La Campana National Park in Chile. We hope that qualifying students will be helped by this scholarship and will do so in memory of this student who only began to realize her dream of study abroad. Ally s life ended tragically during a hiking trip in the beautiful Mt Aspiring National Park while a participant on an ISA semester study abroad program at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. 13 Financial Aid

FINANCIAL AID ISA Terminology Verification of Award (VOA) An ISA form that you must take to your university financial aid office for completion. This form will list the aid that you receive at your home university, such as loans, scholarships, and grants. The completed VOA will also include the amount you receive from each source, the release date(s), and to whom the funds will be sent (university, student or ISA). Consortium Agreement The consortium or contractual agreement is a document that may be required by your home university in order to package or release your financial aid. These agreements often contain important information regarding program costs and additional estimated expenses. These agreements can be sent to financialaid@studiesabroad.com and will generally be completed and returned to your home university within one week. Financial Aid Calculation Tool (FACT) The ISA Financial Aid Calculation Tool (FACT) is a helpful resource to get a better understanding of how the process works. The FACT can be found at studiesabroad.com. Good Faith Payment The Good Faith Payment is essentially a downpayment towards your account balance so that ISA can continue making program arrangements on your behalf while deferring the majority of your payment until your financial aid is disbursed at a later date. Should your financial aid cover the entire cost of your ISA program, this is the minimum out of pocket payment due up front by the final forms and payment deadline. It s important to note that the Good Faith Payment is not an additional fee it will be applied to your overall program balance. All required housing deposits and housing commitment fees (in addition to the Good Faith Payment) must be paid no later than the final forms and payment due date. Good Faith Payments can be made via debit/credit card on the ISA Student Portal or via check or money order (to be deposited immediately upon receipt). Good Faith Payment amounts typically range from $500 - $2,000 and are subject to change. Please see the ISA website at studiesabroad.com for current amounts. 13

Steps to Use Financial Aid with ISA The following is a list of steps that you must complete in order to apply financial aid to your ISA program. FINANCIAL AID Inform your university study abroad and financial aid offices of your interest in using financial aid to pay for an ISA study abroad program and ask about their requirements. Begin working on a budget for your program abroad (see pg. 14). Read and sign the Verification of Award (VOA) found in the ISA Student Portal. Then, work with your university financial aid office to ensure that the VOA is completed and returned to ISA by your final forms and payment deadline Ask your financial aid office if there is a Contractual (Consortium) Agreement that needs to be completed. If so, have that form sent to financialaid@studiesabroad.com ASAP so that it can be completed and returned to your university. Make required payment to ISA and be prepared to submit payment online once your financial aid funds are released. Please contact your ISA program manager if you have any questions or concerns. 14

FINANCIAL AID Financial Aid and Your ISA Program Full payment for the ISA program Guarantee of full payment on VOA and your Good Faith Payment Guarantee of partial payment on VOA and your additional payment (most common) Failure to follow through with payment and completed VOA by the deadline could result in added fees to your ISA program cost and/or cancellation of your ISA application. If the VOA is not completed by the final forms and payment due date, you may either submit payment in full or contact ISA so that we may assist you in setting up a payment plan (which will require an initial payment no less than the Good Faith Payment amount). If you come across any obstacle that prevents you from meeting a deadline, contact ISA immediately. FAQ It is ultimately up to the student to ensure that ISA receives one of the following by the Final Forms and Payment deadline for your program: Q: Can I use my federal or institutional aid when I study abroad? A: ISA is happy to accept any applicable funds; however, this process is determined by your home university. Work with your financial aid office to determine what aid is available and transferable to your study abroad program. Your financial aid office can help you complete the Verification of Award form required in order to defer payment for your ISA program. Q: What if my school can t complete my Verification of Award form by my program deadline? A: If your VOA will not be completed by your program deadline, ISA can help you set up a payment plan for your current program balance. Once we receive your VOA, we can adjust or eliminate your payment plan to reflect your financial aid. Q: What if my funds won t be released until after my program starts? A: Don t worry! This is quite common, as most universities want to ensure the student has arrived and is enrolled in classes before the university will disburse the aid. This is why ISA requires the VOA to be filled out it allows you to defer payment until your funds have been released. Keep in mind your financial aid funds must be released by the mid-point of your program. 15
