5 $1 Million Initiative Over $1 Million in scholarships awarded to over 500 students each year Funding comes from donations, grants, and UCEAP operating reserves Scholarships are part of our strategic plan to make study abroad accessible for all students. We hope to replace funding from operating reserves with donations and grants as we increase our development efforts.

Each application is read & scored by 3 or more reviewers.

8 Goals of Scholarship Program To support high-achieving students with meritbased awards To make study abroad accessible for all by supporting students who self-identify as members of cohorts currently underrepresented in study abroad First-generation college students; students with financial need; transfer students; veterans; STEM majors; other

9 Eligibility UCEAP scholarships from the $1 Million Initiative for are open to all UCEAP students. The award selections will be primarily based on academic merit and integration of a selected UCEAP program into a student s academic and career goals, as demonstrated in a personal statement. Students with financial need or who are traditionally under-represented in UCEAP programs should include the impact these elements have had on their decision to study abroad. Under-represented students include those who have transferred to UC from a California community college or state university, veterans, first-generation college students, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) majors.

11 Academic Merit A. Academic merit: academic preparation for a chosen program. Academic preparation can include language study, GPA, and courses relating to the host country s history, culture, or areas of special study. 1 = low academic merit (little preparation) 5 = high academic merit (significant preparation in courses and/or language study)

12 Academic Alignment B. Academic objectives for study abroad aligned with program selection Examples: plans to complete marine biology research in the Marine Biology program at the University of Queensland, Australia, or study Spanish in the Language & Culture program at the University of Córdoba, Spain. 1 = academic objective not aligned with country or program selection 5 = academic objective clearly aligned with country or program selection

13 Career Alignment C. Career goals aligned with program selection Examples: student interested in public policy participating in the Scottish Parliament Internship program, or engineering student studying at Imperial College London. 1 = career goals not aligned with country or program selection 5 = career goals clearly aligned with country or program selection

Specific Opportunities best accomplished on study abroad described Does the student describe courses, internships, language immersion, or other opportunities only available on study abroad? Can be personal, academic, or career focused. 1 = no indication of specific opportunities best accomplished on study abroad 5 = description of opportunity & why best accomplished on study abroad, as well as clear outline for how student will take advantage or meet goal while abroad

15 Student Identity & Characteristics E. Student Identity or Characteristics Does the student identify as member of underrepresented cohort, or demonstrate characteristics as included in eligibility requirement, and describe the impact of this status or characteristic on his or her decision and ability to study abroad? 1 = no indication in statement of identification or characteristic 5 = demonstration of identification or characteristic & clear description of impact on decision and ability to study abroad

16 Student Identity & Characteristics Underrepresented identities and characteristics include, but are not limited to: -students with financial need -first-generation college students (neither parent has graduated from a 4-year college or university) -transfer to UC from community college or CSU -veterans -STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) majors -others including sexual identity or orientation, studentparent, family responsibilities, immigration status, etc.

17 Scoring Form Reviewers will submit scores of 1-5 for each of the 5 criteria (A-E). The scoring form has a description, example, and dropdown menu for each area, similar to what is shown above. The system will add up the points as you enter them and show the total at the bottom of the form. Once you have assigned points in all areas you can press the green submit button and save your review.

By participating in this review process you confirm that you agree to keep all information, including a student s identification, academic record, financial information, and personal details as shown in the application, confidential.

25 Statement Of Purpose Statement Prompt: Statement of Purpose You must describe how the country and language (if applicable) and specific program you selected will help you achieve your academic and career goals. Include specific opportunities, courses, projects, or goals you plan to pursue while abroad, and explain why studying abroad is the best way to accomplish them. Students with financial need or who are traditionally under-represented in UCEAP programs should include the impact these elements have had on their decision to study abroad. Under-represented students include those who have transferred to UC from a California community college or state university, veterans, first-generation college students, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) majors. Your statement of purpose should be a clear, concise statement, with a maximum of two pages (either single or double-spaced). Please include your name, UC campus, country, and program information at the top of each page. It must be uploaded as a PDF document.
