China Institute Newsletter 2017 农历丁酉年 -- 雞年 Director s Message: Dear Friends of the China Institute, Welcome to the Year of the Rooster! The roosters are active, hard-working, resourceful, courageous, confident, and talented. Though not all of us are a Rooster, we can enjoy the spirit of Rooster for a year. On behalf of China Institute, I wish you all a happy and productive new year! Looking back at the year of the Monkey, we had accomplished many things together. In this newsletter, you will find what we have done in the past year. We continued to develop our China Forum Lecture series and cultural activities. In spring and fall 2016 we have brought outstanding speakers to campus, which greatly benefited our students and faculty and local community members. China Institute continues to help develop international collaborations between CSUN and Chinese universities, and 2016 has been another fruitful year for international exchanges. The China Institute Faculty Development program continues to support faculty research on China-related issues, and our CSUN students received eight Chinese Scholarship Council awards that offer one year s free study and living in China. With the help from local community leaders and faculty advisors, China Institute and CSUN s Chinese Students and Scholars Association continue to provide support to Chinese students and visiting scholars at CSUN. Our faculty members of the China Institute have another productive year of research. I look forward to more great things happening in 2017! Dr. Weimin Sun Director of the China Institute, CSUN

James s presentation left a great impression on the audience. Is the last remaining major communist state on the verge of knocking the United States off its pedestal as SOLE global super power? Is China destined to be THE central story of the 21st Century? Journey with the Giant, a new and boldly unprecedented documentary film by James Isaiah Gabbe and the CITIZENARTS team, focuses on these and other critical questions about pg Newsletter China Institute
China that have become central to U.S. political discourse and have profound implications for the world. Traveling under the radar as a tourist, Gabbe presents an intimate, unvarnished exploration of the land about which Napoleon may have said: There lies a sleeping giant. Let it sleep, for when it awakes, it will shake the world. 3. April 7, Thursday, 11:00am-12:15pm Dr. Junliang Huang, assistant professor of Japanese and Chinese at CSUN s MCLL department presented a lecture titled " Remembering the Asia-Pacific War ( ): Public Memory and its Literary Construction in Postwar China and Japan. Nov. 14. Monday Prof. Wenyu Xie (Shangdong University) Title: Existential Concerns: A Comparative Study of Modern Science and Chinese Science Prof. Xie was a philosophy professor at Beijing University before he came to USA for a Ph.D. degree from Claremont Graduate University. Prof. Xie is one of the leading philosophers in contemporary China, and has published 7 books and more than 100 papers, in both Chinese and English. In this lecture he defends a claim that the Chinese contain an ultimate concern different from the one that sustains modern science. A brief comparative discussion of Xu Guanqi and Galileo Galilei is used to support the claim. It raises a question that, to have a better understanding of the development of modern science in China, we have to penetrate into the religiosity that has been sustaining modern science. pg Newsletter China Institute
Cultural Activities 1. Film Screening of MY Life in China with director Kenneth Eng 6:00-9:00 p.m., October 6, 2016 My Life in China is an award-winning documentary by Director Kenneth Eng, a Guggenheim Fellow. It follows the story of his father, who left China during the Cultural Revolution in 1966 and made a life for himself in Boston with his wife and two children. The film draws a portrait of a father who made huge sacrifices for a better life, endured hardships in America, and asks the challenging question What does it mean to be Chinese and American? Ken Eng says of the film: I wanted to honor and acknowledge the sacrifice of my father and all of our ancestors. They provided us with the opportunity to get a good education so that we could have the freedom to chase our dreams. My life in China is the result of my desire to tell my story in an authentic way.

China Institute Faculty Grant In 2016 three CSUN faculty members, Iswari Pandey of English department, John Whitener of Music department, and David Blumenkrantz of Journalism won China Institute faculty grant to support their research on topics related to China. In this year s newsletter, we ll feature David s report on his China experience. David Blumenkrantz Journalism, China Institute Faculty Grant Receipt 2016 CHINA VISIT JUNE 8-24, 2016 My recent trip to China was made possible in large part by the Faculty Development Grant I received from the CSUN China Institute. I m very grateful for their support, and also for the continuing collaboration with Wuhan University, which provided me with accommodations and logistical support throughout my trip. As proposed, the first priority of this visit was to move forward with a collaborative research project with Prof. Bo Shan of Wuhan University, on the subject of intercultural communication in the interpretation of significant works of Chinese and Western photojournalism focusing on marginalized communities. Prof. Shan and I had lengthy discussions at the beginning and end of my two-week stay in Wuhan, and we were able to arrive at some very specific objectives for our project. We are now determined to move forward, with a book in mind as the end result we have given each other a six-month window to produce our first draft analysis of the photographs we have chosen. We are hoping that further collaborations in this area will include seminars and workshop held at both of our respective campuses. During the stay I was able to conduct further research and wrote a ten-page paper that established the objectives of our project, which I have attached. It includes identifying specific criteria useful in the critical analysis of photographs. At Wuhan University, I gave a series of lectures on the topic of our project, to groups of international students as well as Chinese post-graduate students. These sessions were very productive and the feedback from students was challenging and thought-provoking, helping me to better understand which aspects of the ethics of intercultural communication resonated most effectively with the audience. I was also invited to give a similar lecture at Wuhan South-Central University of Nationalities, before a select group of students and faculty. Another very interesting and productive part of this trip was a four-day stay in Jingzhou, where I was an invited artist and presenter at a symposium held at Yangtze University titled Tracing to its source Phoenix Boat Races and Dragon Boat Culture. Organized by Prof. Sang Jun, it proved to be a very stimulating and educational experience, with scholars from many fields gathering to discuss not only the folkloric but also the socio-political dimensions of keeping such traditions alive in China today. On June 18 th the entire symposium travelled three hours to the village of Binhu, near Hongu City, to witness an actual Phoenix Boat ceremony. It was a great day, filled with music, dancing and the blessings of a very animated Taoist priest. I was able to capture the essence of the event through pg Newsletter China Institute
a series of videos and still photographs. I then constructed a PowerPoint presentation that applied intercultural communication and ethics to the photographic representation of such a traditional ritual ceremony. I subsequently incorporated this into my own presentation at the symposium, as well as to a group of Chinese post-graduate students back at Wuhan later the next week. I am currently writing a synopsis of the Phoenix Boat experience for publication in a book Yangtze University is producing to summarize the symposium. The Chinese term most commonly used at present in the PRC for documentary is jishi, which... means a record of actual events, or an on-the-spot report. More literally, we might translate jishi as a record or even verbal mark or nota1on (ji) of the real (shi) or of the facts or the factual or of the true, or even of the tangible, the full, and the visible. The term jishi, then, resonates well with the history of the term documentary in the West China Institute Faculty Development Grant All CSUN faculty members are eligible to apply for this grant. The grant of $1,200 will provide a seed money for faculty members to start a research project that relates to China or a project that can promote long-term exchange and collaboration with a Chinese university. Applicants should explain how this grant may stimulate larger and longer range projects. Applicants need to submit a written proposal of no more than three double-spaced pages. It should cover the nature and purpose of their project, how they intend to carry it out, how it may help CSUN students or our collaborative relationship with Chinese institutions, and how the funds will be spent related to their travel to China. Additionally, a one-page resume highlighting relevant experiences must be included. A word file containing the proposal and resume must be submitted to director of China Institute, Dr. Weimin Sun, via Weimin.sun@csun.edu, by Feb 15, pg Newsletter China Institute

Contributing to Comparative Education and China s Education Dream By Dr. Justine Su (draft on 2/4/2016) After serving as Director of China Institute at CSUN for 20 years ( ) and establishing more than 40 MOU partnerships for CSUN with Chinese education institutions, Dr. Justine Su returned to Michael D. Eisner College of Education in 2015 to focus on teaching, research and program development in comparative education. In teaching, she successfully revived the graduate seminar on comparative education for students across the campus. In research, she initiated several projects in collaboration with her colleagues at CSUN and scholars in China, including a comparison of university teaching and learning in the U.S. and China, a replication of her earlier comparative study of school principals in Los Angeles and Shanghai, and two followup studies of the impact of study abroad experiences on world outlook and career development for both Chinese scholars/students and for CSUN students, who received full scholarships from the China Scholarship Council for study abroad. In program development, Dr. Su applied and received more than $300,000 grants for short-term training programs in education from Shanghai and Zhejiang universities, and has secured more than $700,000 grant from Shanghai Education Commission for a 2-year master s degree program in higher education at a CSU campus. As a senior editor for the Journal of World Education by the Chinese National Ministry of Education, Dr. Su edited the translation of three papers on American education by Dean Michael Spagna at CSUN in She also wrote and published in this journal a paper on her comparative education studies, offering lessons to Chinese educators and publicizing CSUN s excellent education programs. More importantly, her research paper, Ideal Schools for the New Century: A Comparative Analysis of American and Chinese School Principals Views and Visions, first published in China s scholarly journal, Education Research Monthly in summer 2015, was selected for reprint in two highly prestigious national journals in China - New China Readers Digest by the People s Publishing House and Journal of Primary and Middle School Management by the Chinese National Ministry of Education Information Center for Social Sciences. Further, her presentations at international education conferences and several major Chinese teacher education institutions on the topic of Chinese and American Education in Comparison were enthusiastically received and invited for publication at major education journals and newspapers. Her published article in the popular Shanghai Social Sciences Weekly in 2015 has generated heated discussions among educator scholars and reformers in China. Most recently, Dr. Su s highly publicized cover-page interview article in the Journal of World Education, Strengthen U.S.-China Collaboration and Promote Internationalization of Higher Education, was selected for inclusion as a chapter in the new book, China s Education Dream, edited by Chinese National Center for Education Development and Research and published in Beijing in January Dr. Su is deeply grateful to CSUN leaders and colleagues for supporting her efforts in developing comparative education projects and feels greatly honored to contribute to the creation and fulfillment of China s education dream, an ideal comparable to the perpetual pursuit of equity and excellence in education for all in the American dream. pg Newsletter China Institute
China Scholarship Council Award for CSUN Students In 2016 eight CSUN students are awarded the prestigious CSC scholarship that provides student one or more years study in China with tuition waivered and free room and board. Congratulations to all of the following students! It easily makes CSUN the most CSC award recipients among all universities in Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico and Hawaii, and perhaps in the whole nation. In particular, we like to thank the great support from the Consulate General of the People s Republic in Los Angeles, and CSUN s International and Exchange Student Center, as well as all the faculty members who have recommended the best of CSUN students to this program. Feature Story: Caleb Salas CSC Recipient 2015, Business Honors Association TO CSC Faculty It's fascinating to reflect back to the Chinese Scholarship luncheon we had in August because quite a bit has changed. Entering the second semester, it s been an invigorating 5 months in such a transient, cosmopolitan city like Shanghai. Fudan University provides 20 hours of Chinese language instruction a week - which leaves a good amount for learning outside the classroom. TO CSC Faculty & New CSC Students The scholarship program is truly a hidden gem. In many other parts of the world, university is free. Students don t pay for school. 17 university fees/loans. Mark Twain famously put: I have never let schooling interfere with my education. This quote resonates with my goal for this trip to Shanghai, China. Shanghai is such a vast, unique place from Los Angeles. Seeing how so many other people live has been valuable to know where being an LA resident measures up shanghai s mixed demographic between locals & foreigners lends itself to meeting people of diverse world backgrounds. Most importantly, diverse in thought & behavior. Learning to empathize with very different lifestyles teaches you ability that is extremely beneficial moving forward. The scholarship provided is enough to live comfortably (on a reasonable college budget). It sufficiently covered my living expenses & some travel experiences, like the trip I took to Guilin, China over a school break in the first semester. Since being here, I ve been able to: befriend passionate people, see different parts of the country, learn some Chinese, and network. Enough cannot be said about being surrounded by like-minded individuals. Goals & vision increase through a being contributors to a glowing community. Only things necessary to make a good life in China- self-confidence, humility, ambition. You get what you put in. I came to China knowing only how to greet people with Ni Hao. Knowing Chinese beforehand is a major plus, because you will grow much faster if you have base knowledge, but it is not necessary. Each of my 15 classmates in the 1st semester came from a different part of the world. England, Sweden, Japan, Korea, and France to name a few. Their energy and dynamic allowed an inside look on how different people lead life. I've been actively involved with a student club called Department of International Affairs that coordinates monthly social events for the 3000 international students on campus. It s been a fun way to make Chinese friends and practice the language. Our events averaged 250 students monthly. Out of personal drive, I ve sought out dynamic communities of people from Startup Weekend, Startup Grind Shanghai, and Techyizu. In a major city like Shanghai, these unique groups exist & allow for world-wide collaboration. A few months ago, I wrote about my Startup Weekend experience on Linkedin. Feel free to read the article and provide feedback. I also volunteer with Startup Grind Shanghai and am take part in the monthly planning of events for the local chapter. Everyone is different, likes different things, pursues different lives. None of the credits earned in Shanghai will count toward my degree back home, but the education i ve gotten supersedes the education I would have gotten from my upper division business textbook back home. I ve earnestly sought out unique experiences in what s essentially become a gap year of college. To CSC Students There greatest resource we have in this life is time. If you are young adult age or older, time spent abroad whether Shanghai or elsewhere can teach the lessons that you refer to for the rest of your life. pg Newsletter China Institute
CSC Alumni Association Most of our CSC recipients have gained a great deal from their study and life in China.
