13 Headmistress s Report ( ) Speech Day 24 th November 2017 The academic year has been another eventful one for DGS, not least because it marks the launch of our fledging alternative curriculum, the GCE A Level curriculum alongside the existing HKDSE curriculum in Secondary 5. It is also the year in which the full impact of the m-learning mobile platform was felt most across different Key Learning Areas and year groups, marking as it does the first year of full implementation of the one student one-ipad policy for all classes at DGS. These two developments highlight our emphasis on refining the curriculum so that it meets the diverse learning needs of our girls as well as the alignment of the curriculum towards STEM-related education. The decision on whether to offer courses leading to the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level examinations was first broached in the summer of 2014, when we observed that certain girls may benefit from an alternative curriculum that would enable them to enter courses at local tertiary institutions without having to be dependent on their performance in the Chinese Language subject. We identified teachers able to teach this alternative curriculum, and they in turn attended courses to upgrade themselves with the latest updated information concerning the Advanced Level syllabus. Simultaneously, we sought permission from the Education Bureau to open one Advanced Level class from Secondary 5 onwards and consulted the relevant examination boards, Cambridge International Examination (CIE) and International Advanced Level (IAL), about the mechanism for enrolling students in the Advanced Level public examinations. In the current academic year, the first cohort of A-Level girls attended classes in different A-Level subjects including Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Geography, History, Mathematics and Psychology, as well as school-based Liberal Studies, Chinese (GCSE first language paper) and English (academic paper of IELTS test)

14 Results of the cohort in public Advanced Level module exams and tests taken in Secondary 5 have proven very encouraging, and we look forward to further pleasing results once they complete the full set of exams in Secondary 6 in The m-learning platform implementation began as a small-scale project back in 2011 when 50 ipads were available on loan for teachers and students to conduct their lessons. Recognizing the possibilities that such learning tools could offer in terms of teaching pedagogy and in terms of harnessing the resources and tools available on the internet, the School developed plans to roll out one ipad per student across different year groups, beginning with Secondary 1 and Secondary 4 in This was expanded to involve more year groups in subsequent years. The current academic year marks the full completion of this roll-out, with the support of the IT in Education Team, who constantly monitored, evaluated and shared teaching pedagogy and packages across different Key Learning Areas, including flipped classroom, itunes U and Nearpod-augmented lessons. Undeniably we have witnessed good washback effect of these measures as our girls performed well both academically and in other domains, benefitting from the refined teaching pedagogy and the integration of technology in lessons. This is also exhibited by their participation and improved performance in various external competitions and projects. For example, in August this year a team of Secondary 2 DGS students went to Google Headquarters in Silicon Valley, California and won the champion s trophy in the Technovation App Design Competition, which is a direct result of our refined curriculum emphasizing STEM-based education. These and other such results indicate that we are on the right track in our provisioning of technology-based education at our School and equipping our girls for the future. In academics, I am pleased to report that the girls reaped pleasing results in the HKDSE public examinations this year. A total of

15 girls sat the HKDSE, and attained a total of 143 Level 5**, with 96% of the subject entries awarded Level 3 or above. 87% of the girls were able to meet the local university entrance requirements. Of particular mention is the performance of Maggie Lam, who obtained a perfect score of seven 5**s in all the DSEs she sat, and emerged as the super scorer among top scorers territory-wide. Most others girls were able to pursue their desired university programmes with ease. Girls who sat the first modules of the A Level curriculum in Secondary 5 also fared well, with 97% obtaining As and Bs in their respective AS Level modules. All 100% of the cohort scored 8.0 or above in the English IELTS test, and 100% scored the A grade or above in their GCSE Chinese first language paper. These sets of results indicate a very good start for students taking up the alternative curriculum, and I am pleased to report that the A Level programme is now gaining traction amongst students and parents as they recognize the benefits of this alternative pathway for those with specific learning needs and objectives. In terms of courses opted by girls at tertiary level, more students have elected to pursue STEM-related programmes as their preferred choice than in the past. This heartening trend should break the stereotype that such courses are bastions for boys only, as our girls have shown keen interest and capability in pursuing a STEM-based career. Traditional programmes such as Medicine continue to draw many girls. For the local universities 15 enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine, 1 to the Faculty of Dentistry, and 1 to the Faculty of Speech and Hearing Science. Other girls opted for a diverse range of courses including Architectural Studies, English, Economics, Global Studies, Nursing, Politics and International Relations, Science, Psychology, Quantitative Finance, Social Sciences and Urban Studies. In addition to the local universities, a number of girls took up courses at overseas tertiary institutions, including the London School of Economics and the Royal Veterinary College in the UK, the University of Pennsylvania and

16 the Eastman School of Music in the US, the University of Toronto and McGill University in Canada, Australian National University and the University of New South Wales in Australia and Beijing Normal University in Mainland China. Spanning different continents, these universities clearly appreciate the caliber of our girls and value the education they receive at DGS. Many of our top scholars have also been duly recognized by outside institutions for their strong academic prowess and potential in different fields. Among those who embark on tertiary studies overseas, five were awarded the Hong Kong Scholarship for Excellence: Cheryl Lau, Liang Huilin, Elise Liu, Ng Hong Yu and Dorothy Yip. Ng Hong Yu and Elise Liu were also awarded the American Chamber of Commerce Charitable Foundation Lyn Edinger US Studies Scholarship and the Bernard van Zuiden Music Fund respectively. I would like to go on record to express my deep appreciation and gratitude to our teachers for their dedication and hard work in helping the girls reap these results. Through their impetus, the teaching pedagogy and curriculum of different Key Learning Areas were refined and enhanced, benefiting the girls in their studies. I congratulate our girls for boldly pressing ahead in their school endeavours to obtain these pleasing results. It is important that every student recognizes that each individual has her combination of abilities and limitations, and the real challenge lies in being able to better herself and surpass her own record. Of course, our girls diligence and perseverance deserve our full unbridled appreciation. We take pride in developing our girls into well-rounded individuals as they acquire ample opportunities to learn and grow under the five pillars of the

17 DGS education: steadfastness in learning as they pursue academic excellence, sensitivity towards beauty through aesthetic appreciation of music and the arts, development of stamina, skills and team building through sports, generosity in service to the community and to the world, and the overarching pillar that buttresses the other four, spiritual nurturing that permeates our School when we honour God and serve our fellow man. We encourage a balance between both active and contemplative pursuits so that current and old girls alike can continue to enjoy the rich vibrancy of life, while honing a keen sensitivity towards beauty. Allow me now to paint for you a brief tapestry of our nonacademic achievements. Music at DGS is both a tool to serve and a means to cultivate bonding and friendship. It also draws and inspires people to achieve great heights when they perform and play in harmony, stirring passions and emotions that reach out to the higher sanctum for performers and audience alike. To this end, we continue to draw on the expertise and experience of conductor Mr. Leung Kin Fung, our Performing Arts Director. His presence, together with that of other conductors the School has employed, have added a professional touch to our musical performances. In tandem, our two devoted music teachers continue to work wonders with our student musicians to produce dazzling, spectacular performances. This year has been an exceptional year, as student musicians and their conductors scaled new heights and continued to raise their bar of excellence. In the 69th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, the Symphony Orchestra and String Orchestra came first, as did the Junior Choir and Senior Choir singing in a Foreign Language, while the Junior Choir and Intermediate Choir captured first place singing in Chinese. The Senior Choir and the Senior Mixed Choir were voted the Best Secondary School Choir in their respective classes while the Senior Mixed Choir was also voted the Most Outstanding Secondary School Choir of the Year

18 This was a year of many major musical performances and collaborations. In July 2017 DGS played host to the 3rd School Orchestra Festival of Four Regions Across the Straits, involving some 500 musicians from 9 secondary schools in Taiwan, Guangdong, Macau and Hong Kong at the Tsuen Wan Town Hall. This event was open to the public and was well received. The School s wind and brass players also had the opportunity to conduct music exchanges with the Kagoshima Jogo High School in Japan as part of the Wind Festival in November In May 2017 the Senior Choir and Symphony Orchestra represented Hong Kong at the first Shenzhen-Hong Kong Art & Culture Exchange Festival, as part of celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR. These musical exchanges allowed the public audience at large from different regions of the Asia Pacific rim to witness and appreciate the talents of our student musicians. Our musicians also served the community through the sharing of their music, for example through sessions of providing musical interludes at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital once every month. Students eagerly signed up for these sessions knowing that they can bring some comfort through music to those undergoing the hardship of being in hospital, whether as patients, as visiting family members or as members of the medical staff. The Intermediate Choir took part in Christmas caroling at the Kowloon Cricket Club and sang at the 110th Anniversary Celebratory Concert at St Andrew s Church as an expression of service. I think we can safely say that music-making at DGS is synonymous with the School s quest for excellence and the School s motto of Daily Giving Service. As for our drama troupe and especially our actresses, this year was again an especially memorable one. Our Drama Ensemble took part in the Hong Kong School Drama Festival and their Pu Tong Hua piece, 三人四足, captured the

19 Award for Outstanding Stage Effect, Outstanding Cooperation, Commendable Overall Performance and Award for Outstanding Script, as well as Outstanding Director and Outstanding Performer. The School advocates the participation of all students in sports for health and a healthy lifestyle. In the sports arena our talented athletes represented the School in 23 different Inter-school competitions and achieved very encouraging results. We were the champions in eleven of the inter-school events and the runner up in six others. We were the champion in Athletics, Badminton, Dodgeball, Dragon Boat Racing, Fencing, Indoor-rowing, Lifesaving, Orienteering, Swimming, Tennis and Tenpin Bowling, while the Chinese Dance Team clinched the Highly Commended Award. Equally remarkable is the number of consecutive championships we have amassed over the years. Our Swimming Team, Orienteering Team and Athletics Team have now won the Inter-school championships for the 29th, 13th and 11th consecutive years respectively. Consequently, DGS once again emerged as the champion in the Bank of China Hong Kong(BOCHK) Rising Star Award and came second in the BOCHK Bauhinia Bowl Award with eight individual athletes receiving the Outstanding Athlete Awards in different disciplines. Moreover, four other students received the newly established Grantham Foundation Fund Outstanding Student Athlete Award this year. All these results came about as a result of the tremendous effort, teamwork and dedication that has been put in through hours of training and practice by the captains and members of our sports teams, and by the teachers-in-charge and coaches. On behalf of the School I would like to take this opportunity to extend my appreciation to all those who have made these spectacular achievements on the different sporting surfaces and arenas possible. For more details of the Schools performance in sport you may refer to the report uploaded onto the School Homepage. To provide a broader exposure to our girls through other learning

20 experiences, we have looked into ways to revamp the way in which ECAs are delivered within the school. This year marks our transition to the revamped Other Learning Experience (OLE) programme to provide girls a greater range of interests to choose from, as well as to enhance their acquisition of different nonacademic skills and knowledge, as we had noticed that our girls were more than ready to do so. We sought the support from tertiary local universities within the vicinity of the School, including Baptist University, City University and Open University to offer courses delivered by their lecturers to our girls on various Friday afternoons throughout the course of the year. The variety of courses offered depended on the interest of the girls, and ranged from Magazine Layout and Design, Documentary Film-making and Drama Performance courses to specialized courses run by professionals in different fields, for example Bowling, Cricket and Rock-Climbing. To facilitate the timetabling, we revamped the Other Learning Experience (OLE) lesson by replacing the Friday afternoon ECA sessions which typically lasted one 45-minute period with five extended OLP (Other Learning Programmes) afternoon sessions, each lasting the whole afternoon till the end of school. As a result of the extra time allotted, these extended OLP sessions gave ECA groups the flexibility to attend courses within and outside the school campus as well as to conduct their activities in greater depth. The feedback received by students and course providers on the revamped OLE has been resoundingly positive, and we look forward to continuing this arrangement in subsequent years. In recognition of the need to broaden the exposure of the girls to learn beyond the context of the classroom, I am pleased to report that the School has expanded the number and range of opportunities for girls to go on local and overseas exchange programmes. This year we had exchange programmes with a number of local secondary schools. In each of these exchanges, six to twelve students made reciprocal visits to each other s school for

21 three days. The exchanges proved worthwhile and students were able to compare notes about the teaching and learning environment at each other s schools. To try and meet the objective of ensuring at least one opportunity for our girls to travel abroad on an exchange trip or programme in the course of their secondary school life, we offered more overseas exchange opportunities. Over 240 girls, accompanied by their teachers, were able to travel abroad on an overseas study trip or exchange programme organized by the School in the last academic year. In particular, we opened four new subject-based study programmes to schools in Zhenjiang, Hangzhou, Guangzhou and Shanghai in Mainland China and over one hundred Secondary 4 students took advantage of this opportunity to learn and reinforce their understanding of Chinese History and language. Other novel subject-based exchange programmes that proved worthwhile include the Technology and Living Department s course at the Ecole de Patisserie de Tokio in June We look forward to the continuation of such programmes in the coming years to enhance our girl s local and global exposure. I would now like to report on a few of the new initiatives implemented this year with respect to student support and guidance and service to the community. One such initiative is in the enhancement of our careers guidance service through the deployment of a dedicated Careers Counselor Miss J. Tsoi this year, to assist the School s Careers Team in the offering timely information, advice and help to girls with respect to their career aspirations and applications to universities. This enhanced service has proven effective as girls consulted the counselor to make informed choices about their career pathway. In tandem with this initiative, the School held its first Summer School Fair in February 2017 and its very own in-house Careers Fair in April 2017 with the support of the Diocesan Old Girls Association (DOGA). The Careers Fair proved particularly successful, attracting over 350 students as they interacted with 80 representatives from a diverse

22 range of professions. The girls expressed appreciation at being able to have one-on-one exchanges with these representatives who were able to provide direct and relevant information pertaining to their career choice. Apart from careers-related support, girls also gain support from the programmes provided by the School Guidance and Counselling team, together with the help of the school social worker. The team arranged many talks and workshops for girls as well as their parents with the aim of improving the understanding, harmony and overall well-being amongst girls and their families. Girls attended one camp per year with specific focus for each year group from Secondary 1 to Secondary 5 throughout the course of their secondary school life. These activities help to draw girls closer together, as they strengthen friendship, class spirit and identity within the year-group. Details of activities, talks, workshops and camps related to student support can be found in the reports of the Careers and Guidance and Counselling Departments on the School Homepage. Another very important aspect of the DGS education is the call to do social service. Through the experience of caring for and serving others in Daily Giving Service, our girls cultivate a strong sense of social responsibility and commitment, and develop empathy and compassion for the under-privileged and less fortunate. In addition to the number of ongoing service programmes and projects that we take part in every year, a new initiative that I would like to highlight is the Best Buddies Movement which aims at social inclusion through the promotion of friendship between those with and those without intellectual disabilities. In May 2017, with the help of the Fu Hong Society, our School hosted a ceremony to mark the formation of this new Best Buddies Hong Kong chapter between Diocesan Girls School and Mary Rose School. The programme provides a chance for students of DGS and Mary Rose School to cultivate friendships with one another through shared

23 activities and outings. It is hoped that the programme can be extended to include the family members of the students, so that they can share and appreciate the challenges and joy of daily living together through such friendships and activities, and gain mutual understanding and support. In order to plan ahead with respect to the future development of our campus as well as to review the state of the school facilities upon occupation of the School after its redevelopment from September 2011 onwards, a post-occupation survey was conducted in the current academic year to obtain the views of different stakeholders on the provision of various facilities within the School campus. The results from this survey indicated that the staff and students are generally satisfied with the provisioning of the different rooms, labs, halls and other facilities within the School campus, in terms of ventilation, temperature and lighting of the different classrooms and venues. They were also generally satisfied with the level of the greenery distributed throughout school campus. One exciting initiative that will commence in the coming academic year is the project to install boarding facilities within the School campus to cater to the needs of up to 60 boarders in the years ahead. Approval of this project has already been granted by the Education Bureau, and plans have been drawn up with the help of an appointed architectural firm to supervise the construction of boarding facilities within the existing main building. The School is now ready for the next stage of planning to renovate the 9th, 10th and 11th floors of the main building, to provide accommodation and dining facilities for up to 60 girls as well as ancillary rooms and other amenities for boarders and staff members. Construction is projected to begin in the second half of the academic year, with the expected completion date targeted in the last quarter of The provision of boarding facilities will certainly prove very welcome for girls living far away from the DGS campus who

24 feel that they can benefit from the DGS education by living on- site. The project will bring about an exciting new phase in the School s development as we return back to the time when the School accepts boarders once again, as it once did in its long and illustrious past. The anchor of the DGS education is our Christian faith. As has been tradition at DGS, every morning the whole school continues to enjoy the customary privilege of starting each day with worship in the Auditorium, thanking God for His Blessings and seeking His Guidance as we live and learn each day. I am grateful to the Christian teachers who took turns and joined me in sharing encouraging messages during morning assemblies each day, where much of our values education is based. I am also thankful to the girls who conducted their class morning assemblies. It was clearly evident from their sharings on the theme of Who is God to Me? that they had put in a lot of thought and personal reflection into their work, displaying much wisdom and understanding well beyond their years, which was gratifying to behold. I am especially thankful to the team led by Reverend McCoy from St. Andrew s Church for faithfully coming to teach us the Word of God during assembly on Friday mornings. To close this report, I would like to thank the Members of the School Council, the School Management Committee, in particular, the Chairman of the School Council, the Rt. Rev.
