2 DISTRICT SPEECH CONTEST TOPIC The Rotary District 6710 Speech Contest started in Since its inception, the annual topic for the Speech Contest has been the Rotary International President's chosen 'Theme'. This year RI President John F. Germ has selected "Rotary Serving Humanity as Rotary s theme. As Rotary looks to seeing its more than 20 year battle for Polio eradication worldwide finally being accomplished in the upcoming year, RI President Germ states that As we continue to work tirelessly toward our goal of worldwide polio eradication, we must also look beyond it; preparing to leverage our success into even greater successes to come. No more than 20 words by someone else can be used without crediting the person of origin. Speeches are to be 5 to 8 minutes long. Penalties are assessed if this time window is broken. Speeches may not be read although cue cards or notes will be permitted but only at the local club level contests. Excessive reference to notes or reading of speeches at the club level contests will result in points being deducted from the student s score. Speeches must be memorized for all advanced contests. There will be speeches at the club level and three advanced levels - Sectionals, Regionals and Finals. Prize values increase as winners advance. The District Winner will have finished first at all four contest levels. President Germ continues We know that if we want to see Rotary Serving Humanity even better in the years ahead, we ll need more willing hands, more caring hearts, and more bright minds to move our work forward. We ll need clubs that are flexible, so that Rotary Service will be attractive to younger members, recent retirees, and working people. We ll need to seek out new partnerships, opening ourselves to more collaborative relationships with other organizations. Every day that you serve in Rotary, you have the opportunity to change lives. Everything you do matters; every good work makes the world better for us all. In this new Rotary year (July 2016 to July 2017, we all have a new chance to change the world for the better, through Rotary Serving Humanity. The District 6710 Speech Contest is open for all Kentucky High School Students who reside within the District's service area, which is basically the western half of the state. Students should prepare their speech by addressing this year's Theme or Topic. This can be applied to the student's personal observations and experiences or to Rotary or other organizations who have similarly engaged and had a significant impact on a personal, local, national, or international level. Speeches may reference Rotary and/or its purpose and past accomplishments, but the real objective for each speech is for each contestant to address the topic on a personal level. What does this theme mean to each student and in what ways can they see it being fulfilled? Detailed questions may be directed to your local Rotary Club or to the District Speech Contest Coordinators listed on the Rotary District 6710 web site. "For the latest contest information, students are encouraged to visit our web site at and click on the Speech Contest tag. Here you can find downloadable Speech Contest packets and other valuable information. Any changes in the advanced contest schedule will be posted here. The District web site will also track the contest as it progresses and will post contest rules, schedules, times, locations, prizes and reference links and materials that may be helpful to student contestants. Students and Speech Contest coaches are urged to check the Speech Contest Pages on the District 6710 web site frequently as they prepare for the contest. Students entering this year's contest -please take note that the winners of Club level contests will be notified as to the date, time, and location of their Sectional Contest and all advanced level contests.

Rotary International is a volunteer organization of business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service, and help to build goodwill and peace in the world. There are approximately 1.2 million Rotary club members belonging to 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Founded in Chicago in 1905, Rotary celebrated 100 years of service in The Rotary Foundation has awarded more than US$2.1 billion in grants, which are administered at the local level by Rotary clubs. What is the purpose of Rotary? Rotary clubs exist to improve communities through a range of humanitarian, intercultural and educational activities. Clubs advance international understanding by partnering with clubs in other countries. Rotary also encourages high ethical standards in all vocations. What do Rotary clubs do? Rotary clubs address critical issues at home and abroad by providing health care and medical supplies, clean water, food, job training, youth development, and education to millions of people in need. Examples of Rotary s focus areas include: Polio Eradication - In 1985, Rotary International created PolioPlus a program to immunize al the world s children against polio. To date, Rotary has contributed US$800 million and countless volunteer hours to the protection of more than two billion children in 122 countries. Rotary is currently working to raise an additional US$200 million toward a US$355 million challenge grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. These efforts are providing much needed polio vaccine, operational support, medical personnel, laboratory equipment and educational materials for health workers and parents. In addition, Rotary has played a major role in decisions by donor governments to contribute over $4 billion to the effort. With its community-based network worldwide, Rotary is the volunteer arm of the global partnership dedicated to eradicating polio. Rotary volunteers assist in vaccine delivery, social mobilization and logistical help in cooperation with the national health ministries, the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Peace -In an efort to educate tomorow s peacemakers and ambassadors, up to 110 Rotary World Peace Fellows are sponsored each year to study at one of the eight universities for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution. Since 2002, 339 fellows from over 75 countries have participated at a cost of more than $23 million. International Education- Rotary is the world s largest privately-funded source of international scholarships. Each year, about 1,000 university students receive Rotary scholarships to study abroad. Rotary clubs also coordinate a high schoolage student exchange program that has sent nearly 8,000 students abroad for three months to a year. Humanitarian Projects - Rotary clubs initiate thousands of humanitarian service projects every year. These volunteerdriven projects address the root causes of conflict, such as hunger, poverty, disease and illiteracy. Literacy - Rotary clubs work to improve literacy rates worldwide. A unique, Rotary-pioneered approach called the Concentrated Language Encounter (CLE) has proven very effective in resource-strapped developing countries. It was so successful in Thailand, that the Thai government adopted the program nationwide. Water Management - Recognizing the importance of clean water, many Rotary clubs help to install wells and develop water treatment and distribution systems to increase access to fresh drinking water for communities in need, especially in developing countries. Attend your club s next assembly and help plan club activities. IMPROVE MY COMMUNITY Volunteer to help with your club s signature project one your club is known for in the community. Work with a youth program sponsored by your club, such as Interact. Identify a need in your community and suggest a hands-on project that addresses this need. BUILD MY NETWORK Attend as many club meetings as you can. Connect with different people each time. Join a Rotary Fellowship and meet Rotarians in other countries who share your interests. Go to your district conference and the RI Convention. Check out another Rotary club s meeting. If you truly want to give back to the community and to the world at large you join Rotary. Foundation grants support projects that provide clean water, medical care, literacy classes, and other essentials to people in need all around the world. Since 1947, Rotarians have contributed nearly US$2.9 billion to the Foundation to fund these vital efforts.
