1 PRESS RELEASE 2016 SOUTH AFRICA ITALY SUMMIT THIRD EDITION BUILDING A COMMUNITY OF LEADERS FOR GROWING THEIR ENTERPRISES IN THE TWO COUNTRIES AND CONTINENTS. October 18 and 19, 2016 Hyatt Regency #southafricasummit Sub-Saharan Africa is still in the international spotlight. Over the past 10 years, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the area has more than doubled and its population has topped the billion mark, and despite the slow-down in emerging countries, it grew at a rate of 3.4% between 2014 and 2015, faster than the world average. The number of foreign direct investment (FDI) projects in the area rose from 569 to 605 between 2014 and South Africa is the most important economy in the area with a GDP of almost 310 billion euros, equivalent to 20% of the GDP of Sub-Saharan Africa attracting approx. 17% of the continent s investment projects. Africa has aroused the keen interest of Italy once more: the number of FDIs in the continent between 2014 and 2015 doubled, generating 7.4 billion dollars and creating over 3,800 jobs. A favorite destination is, of course, South Africa, where Italian SMEs, coordinated and sustained by the strong business community between the two Countries, can seize unprecedented opportunities for cooperation in various sectors. Among these the automotive sector, which accounts for 7.5% of South Africa s GDP, making the country the 21st vehicle manufacturer in the World. The leading international players are increasing their involvement in the country while the Italian players are still under-active, missing out on important opportunities for growth. The agrifood sector also offers important mutual advantages: South Africa is an excellent base for manufacturing and exporting on a regional scale, while Italy is consolidated in niche markets at the highest level for agricultural machinery and its respective value chain. With regard to the energy sector, the situation is different, since a number of leading Italian operators are already present and well-consolidated in the country also in the renewable energy sector, but potential for cooperation along the supply chain especially in relation to the new smart grid and storage technologies has not yet been explored. Another rapidly expanding business in South Africa is the digital sector. The greatest opportunities are to be found in the sector of infrastructure and other enabling technologies, but there are also possibilities for cooperation between the institutions of the two countries in the context of e-government.

2 Johannesburg - The European House Ambrosetti has organized the third South Africa Italy Summit which will take place on Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 October 2016 in Johannesburg at the Hyatt Regency Hotel (the first two editions were held in Capetown). The Summit is sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Italian Embassy in South Africa, the South African Embassy in Italy, the National Foreign Trade Institute ICE, the South African Italian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Emilia- Romagna Region and the Secretariat of State for Industry, Handicraft, Trade, Transport and Research of the Republic of San Marino. This year, the Summit will also have the sponsorship and active cooperation of the Province of Gauteng which accounts for 34% of South Africa s GDP and 10% of the GDP of the entire continent the main driver in the continuously multiplying relations between Italy and South Africa. Paolo Borzatta, Senior Partner of The European House - Ambrosetti, underlines the importance of reinforcing relations between South Africa and Italy/Europe: South Africa and the countries of southern Africa tend to remain outside the radar of the majority of the Italian businesses. This is a strategic error because the opportunities and potential synergies between Italy and South Africa are partially unexplored. Moreover, in the decades to come South Africa will be one of the development hubs of Africa, the great world economy of the future. The Summit, very exclusive and by invitation only, will bring together the highest echelons of Italian and South African business leaders, eminent economists and representatives of government to discuss strategic opportunities in the two countries. The Summit will provide a common platform for entering and expanding into the Sub-Saharan continent. The goal is to significantly increase investments and trade synergies between the two countries and the respective continents. This edition will welcome approx. 150 business leaders, half of whom are Italian. A number of delegations from various parts of Italy will also take part in this year s forum and the Summit will provide an occasion for concluding agreements with South African companies and organizations: from Lombardy, represented by the Deputy-Governor of the Lombardy Region, Fabrizio Sala, to Emilia-Romagna, represented by its Governor Stefano Bonaccini. This year, for the first time, there will also be corporate delegations and representatives of Institutions (Ministries and Embassies) from other African countries (Botswana, Namibia) and other European countries (Greece, Portugal and Spain), as well as from South Africa and Italy. Alongside and during the Summit, the following documents will be signed: a Ministerial agreement between the Italian Ministry of Environment and Protection of Land and Sea and the South African Ministry of Water and Environmental Affairs; a Memorandum of Understanding between the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Province of Gauteng. The Summit will also be the backdrop for the presentation of the preliminary results of the Social Initiative launched with the 2015 edition, during which the leaders taking part in the Summit offered to act as mentors for young South Africans: two startuppers will present a pitch during the gala dinner on October 18. 2
