Who Challenged Authority Florence Nightingale Was born in Italy on May 12, She was named after the city where she was born. Her favourite colour was blue. Florence also had a older sister named Parthenope. Florence was never married and did not have any kids. She declined her chance to get married, and decided to take on a nursing career instead. Florence died August 13, 1919, in London, United Kingdom
Florence's Character Trait #1: Committed -Florence chose a path full of effort and commitment to caring for others who were hurt and wounded. -Florence did not ask information about pay and benefits before leading her team of nurses to Crimea, because she was committed. Crimea was located in Eastern Europe, in the Ukraine and was across the black sea from turkey. -She survived in hard living conditions that nowadays would be considered as intolerable living conditions. She did this because she didn t care about how she would be paid she just had a passion for helping the sick and wounded and that s exactly what she did.
Florence's Character Trait #2: Capable -Florence believed she was capable of being a nurse, despite her parents objection to nursing -Florence had to be very capable of nursing and helping the sick because if she wasn't then the war office and military wouldn't of let her in to help the soldiers -Florence was more than just capable of nursing, she was also a very good at writing. She wrote at least 50 books in her days.
Florence's Character Trait #3: Courageous -Florence didn't allow opposition from the British Aristocracy or military leaders to prevent her from doing her work -Florence stood up for what was right instead of going home and letting the military say she couldn't become a nurse. She went to Crimea and became the best nurse she could possibly be. -She went across the ocean and left home as a young girl away from her parents, she also choose a profession that can be depressing at times. She chose nursing over everything.
Florence's Character Trait #4: Loyalty -Florence was a team builder and cared a lot about the people under her wing and the soldiers that were under her care. -Her loyalty to the soldiers she helped, lead to the fact that when she was buried, her coffin was escorted by veterans from the Crimean war. -Florence was also loyal to her family
Authority Figure -Her parents(william and Frances) - didn't want her to become a nurse because a young lady of nightingale was suppose to marry a man of means, not to take up a job -Her mother France's Nightingale, came from a family of merchants -Her father William Shore Nightingale, was a wealthy landowner who had inherited two estates -War office - there were female nurses stationed at hospitals in Crimea. The reputation of last female nurses had led the war office to avoid hiring more.
How Was The Authority Figure Challenged -Florence challenged her parents by turning down her man and pursuing her true calling despite her parent objections, Florence enrolled as a nursing student at the Lutheran Hospital of Pastor Fliedner in Kaiserswerth, Germany -Florence challenged the war office by going into nursing when nursing wasn't an ideal job. -She used her own money to make the hospital a cleaner and healthier place for patients -She sent reports back to London about how to improve the conditions
Was Florence Justified In Challenging Authority -I think she did the right thing by going into nursing because everyone thought that women wouldn't be good as good at nursing as men, because the female nurses in the past hadn't been that good, when Florence went into nursing she did something people said she couldn't and she also lead the way for other women who want to pursue nursing. It also wasn't like something came bad out of her nursing, great things came from her nursing career. After the war she opened up a training school for nurses, young women everywhere aspired to be like her.
What Was The Impact Of The Authority Being Challenged -Before Florence came along, nurses considered their jobs to be unimportant and of low-status, they were untrained and were not taught about nursing, but learned through experience. Florence s efforts turned nursing into a respectable profession raising the standards by incorporating education and responsibilities into the job. Nurses were no longer looked down upon, but became respected and appreciated. -Florence also improved hospitals. As a nurse in the Crimean War, she took notice of the dirtiness and failure of the military hospitals. By making sanitary improvements and establishing standards for clean and safe hospitals, she helped bring down the death rate for soldiers being treated in them.
