Degree Programme in Social Services The basis of the education is helping people cope in their everyday life, in different social environments and activities. The degree programme gives the students the possibility to extensively study social and behavioural sciences, which form the theoretical basis for work in the social services. In addition to this attention is paid to the development of different creative problem-solving methods and creative thinking, as well as the mastering of the professional skills required in social work. Graduates are qualified for specialist duties in the social services sector. The degree is called a polytechnic degree in social services (Bachelor of Social Services). The student can choose one option of the following: o Option of Social Services for Intoxicant Abusers and Mental Health Work o Option of Social Insurance o Option of Social Services for the Disabled and Special Education o Option of Social Services for the Elderly o Option of Early Childhood Education, Child Welfare and Social Youth Work The Degree Programme in Social Services is divided into basic studies and professional studies. The basic and professional studies include obligatory and optional courses. The purpose of the optional basic studies is to level out the differences in the students initial level of competence. The Degree Programme also contains free-choice studies, which the student can use either to further develop his/her professional expertise in a specific area or to extend it to other areas. It is recommended that the free-choice studies are chosen from the other degree programmes of the polytechnic. The wide choice of free-choice courses enables the student to develop an extensive range of skills and make individual decisions in the development of his/her professional expertise. This is essential in the everyday work in the social services today, and the education aims at creating new varieties of expertise and developing the social services to better meet the changing needs of the clients.
