15 What our patients say Ian's story * Before Ian came to the Bamburgh Clinic he was in jail, suffered from depression and thought there was no point going on with his life. Ian now feels that since he was admitted to Bamburgh Clinic his life has improved a great deal. When Ian first came he found it very difficult to even look people in the eye. He used to struggle with feelings of low self- esteem, self-doubt, extreme anxiety and nervousness. With the help of Psychology staff, Ian learned more about himself especially how to be open and honest about his feelings and emotions as well as to trust that others could help him. All names have been changed and library photos used to protect identity. During his time at Bamburgh, Ian has worked well with staff in occupational therapy to establish coping skills which he can use in a variety of situations and currently feels that this experience has been invaluable to help him deal with anything that crops up. Ian has now successfully completed education accredited courses giving him more confidence and feeling more self-assured. Ian's time on the Bamburgh Clinic has made him feel more positive, optimistic and hopeful about himself and the future. Ian often states that the Bamburgh Clinic has given him a second chance in life. Shining a light on the future
16 John's story * John is a 34 year old man who had experienced symptoms of depression and had suffered from anxiety for a long period of time. He had given up on life and felt extremely low. John's relationship with his family had become increasingly problematic and he was struggling to cope. Initially, he felt very confused and unsettled being away from home but was surprised by how supported and relaxed the atmosphere at the Bamburgh clinic was. John found the staff very helpful and eventually began to trust them. John received regular CBT sessions which helped to give him insight into how his behaviour had affected others. He was supported in ways to help reduce his anxiety by socialising with other people and learning the skills to do this. John has participated in regular group activities and developed his abilities in cooking and other daily living tasks. He attended weekly education sessions at Bamburgh clinic which improved his academic skills and enabled him to attain Level 1 & 2 in English and is working towards the same in Maths. John now feels much better about the future and is looking forward to living in the community again.
