1 Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Training Syllabus Summer 2015 Course Length: July 28 to August 11, 2015 (Tuesdays and Thursdays) Live Meeting Dates: July 28, July 30, August 4, August 6 and August 11, 2015; all assignments are due August 25, Meeting Time: 9:00am- 1:30 pm CST (10:00-2:30pm, EST, 8:00-12:30pm MT, 7:00-11:30am PST) All live course sessions will be archived to watch after live broadcast. Training Description The purpose of this training is to provide medical personnel with knowledge specific to the pediatric sexual abuse examinations for collection of evidence and identification of injury that might have been sustained. The nurse or physician will be trained to conduct and complete the evidentiary examination on a child or adolescent as well as focus on techniques and issues that will assist them to accomplish the task. This training does not certify nurses or physician s to perform evidentiary examinations. While it is recommended that you watch and participate in all live online broadcast sessions, it is not required. If you do not have the ability to attend a live session you are expected to access and watch the archived video for the class session you missed. In order to receive a Certificate of Completion you must watch all 24 hours of the course by the last day of the session (August 25, 2015). Satisfactory completion indicates that the medical personnel has attended and participated in the intense 40 hour training (20 hours of lecture, 20 hours of assignments). Please note that materials distributed and/or discussed in this training should be protected meaning no copies, sharing, or redistribution of materials is permitted. Homework outside of participation in the live online streaming will be given and completion expected. Post clinical requirements will be the responsibility of the attendee to arrange after the course with their employer. II. Continuing Education Credit 40 CEU Hours will be awarded to those who complete all course requirements. IAFN states: SANE Education must be a minimum of 40 hours of coursework that yields 40 nursing contact hours/academic credit/national equivalents to be eligible to sit for the SANE- P Certification Examination. 1

Learning Objectives: WEEK WEEK 1- Class 1 (July 28) Week 1- Class 2 (July 30) WEEK 2- Class 3 (August 4) WEEK 2- Class 4 (August 6) WEEK 3- Class 5 (August 11) Recorded Panel Discussion LEARNING OBJECTIVES Recognize the diverse psychosocial issues associated with underserved patient populations such as children with disabilities, Familial perpetration and mental health issues. Describe the role and scope of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner State the definition of Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) List two obstacles health care professions may face when trying to report suspected Child Abuse Describe two reasons for late disclosures of child sexual abuse from children Identify key concepts associated with offender typology and related impact on sexual abuse/assault patient populations List several grooming behaviors that child molesters use on the children and their families State several reasons why best practice points to a child abuse center for evaluation of child sexual abuse. Label the different anatomical areas of the female and male anogenital anatomy. Demonstrate an understanding of normal anatomical variants such as septate hymen and inter vaginal ridges. Verbalize the effect that estrogen has on the female genital area Able to describe the difference between an acute and non- acute child sexual abuse examination for the pediatric and adolescent patient. List two developmental milestones for a one or a two year old. Give a case example of a tanner scale assessment on a 11 year old child. List several reasons for the use of photography in child abuse cases. Discuss difference between RAW and JPG photos Discuss patient s rights during a forensic examine using a case study to demonstrate patient consent. Demonstrate bookend photograph and state the procedure you would follow for taking orientation photographs. Verbalize why it is Normal to be Normal for children examined for sexual abuse and give a case example List two referral s that a child and family will need following the child sexual abuse evaluation. State two different types of examine positions that child will be placed in for the anogenital evaluation examination. Identify 2 congenital variants that often look like injury in the female genital area List several symptoms or complaints in urethral prolaspse Locate the STD treatment recommendations from the CDC web site for children who have been sexually assaulted or molested State two indications for culture testing in children List two genital symptoms or complaints you might see in children with Chlamydia infection Describe the purpose of the Forensic Interview Explain the role of the Forensic Interviewer vs SANE patient interview State two examples of open ended questions you might ask a child during the nurse interview. Define the importance of peer review and quality improvement as it relates to diagnostic accuracy and best practices Discuss the roles and responsibilities Child protective services, Law Enforcement and the Forensic Interviewer as they relate to pediatric and adolescent sexual abuse/assault Describe what you should do when you receive a subpoena Discuss the Crawford Decision Discuss the key processes associated with pretrial preparation State the difference between fact and expert witnesses Differentiate between family, civil, and criminal judicial proceedings to include applicable rules of evidence Describe the roles and responsibilities of the various multidisciplinary team members involved in the CAC response to Child Sexual Abuse 2

Instructor Bio Diana Faugno, MSN, RN, CPN, SANE- A, SANE- P, FAAFS, DF- IAFN A native of Minnesota, Diana Faugno graduated with a degree in Nursing from the University of North Dakota in 1973 and she received her Master s in Nursing from the University of Phoenix. She is a Founding Board Director of End Violence Against Women International as well as a board member of CAPSAC California American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. She is Treasurer of the foundation for the International Association of Forensic Nurses. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Forensic Science, as well as a Distinguished Fellow in the International Association of Forensic Nurses. She provides trainings across the country to assist teams in development of staff on topics using curriculums and educational standards on various topics relating to sexual assault. She is the nurse examiner at the Barbara Sinatra Children s Center and a nurse examiner for Eisenhower Medical Center. Ms. Faugno is also the co- author of Color Atlas of Sexual Assault (Mosby Publications 1997). This was the first book of its kind in the nation. She is also co- author of Sexual Assault across the Life Span, (GW Medical 2003, Entry- Level Adolescent and Adult Sexual Assault Assessment SANE/SAFE Forensic Learning Series 2012) and numerous other publications. V. Course Format Online Live Streaming: This course will utilize the Midwest Regional CAC elearning portal and web conferencing via Webex to broadcast the weekly course sessions online. If you have participated in EduNet Webinars through Midwest Regional CAC, you will notice that we will be utilizing a similar online platform. If you are unable to attend the session live, the weekly course sessions will be archived in the elearning Portal for you to access at a later time. You will receive instructions on how to access, log in, and use the Midwest Regional CAC elearning Portal and WebEx during your orientation. Orientation is MANDATORY prior to the start of class to ensure your familiarity with the different tools that will be utilized and for you success in completing the coursework. VI. Required Costs and Course Materials This course requires a tuition payment and an additional expense for reading materials purchased by the participant. Ordering information: Evaluation- Child- Sexual- Abuse/dp/ VII. Course Assignments There are 20 hours of additional assignments to be completed outside of the classroom. All assignments are due 2 weeks after the end of class (due: August 25, 2015). You will not receive a certificate of completion/ attendance without successful assignments completion with a passing grade as assignment hours are accounted for in the curriculum. All assignments must be completed in Times New Roman 12 pt. type with your name, the date, title of 4

5 assignment and assignment # in the upper left- hand corner. *Please see Assignment Instruction Sheet for more information. VIII. Evaluation and Course Completion After the first and last scheduled module you will have the opportunity to complete an evaluation in the elearning Portal, which will in turn help us to improve the course for future participants. At the end of the course and once all assignments are completed you will asked to complete an end of course evaluation after which, you will receive a Certificate of Completion for 40 hours. You will not get a Certificate of Completion if you do not complete the end of course evaluation and receive a passing grade on all assignments within the allotted course time. 5
