4 Welcome from Clive Spencer, Director, NHS North East Leadership Academy Welcome to the North East NHS Leadership Recognition Awards We re proud to host these awards the fourth such event which showcase the immense talent and commitment of NHS leaders working in health and social care across our region. Whether an established leader, or at the start of their leadership journey, the awards finalists have all demonstrated a commitment to tacking the challenges facing today s NHS. They have gone the extra mile to make a positive difference to their peers, teams, organisations, and most importantly, to their patients and service users. On behalf of the NHS North East Leadership Academy team, I d like to congratulate everyone nominated for an award you should feel proud of your achievements. Since its inception, our team has offered NHS leaders like you access to development opportunities to help you deal with a changing landscape. Over and above skills development training, we take a holistic approach to develop the competency and wellbeing of a strong community of professional leaders. It s vital that we use the talent, skills and efforts of the entire healthcare system to transform and sustain the high quality, affordable services we aim to deliver for patients and service users. A regular conclusion from numerous reviews is that constant investment in leadership and organisational development is pivotal to achieve this ambition. Our excellent team of Academy staff plus our growing community of associates and partners have worked innovatively and effectively to increase the quality, quantity and range of services we offer. An increasing number of participants and alumni, along with requests for assistance, demonstrate that we deliver training in line with the interest and practice of our leadership communities. As always, thank you for your continued support. I hope you enjoy today s event and leave inspired to develop your leadership practice even further over the coming year. Clive Spencer Director, NHS North East Leadership Academy

6 Today s guest speakers Matthew Syed Born in 1970 to a Pakistani father and Welsh mother, Matthew Syed attended a state school in Reading, leaving at the age of sixteen to focus on table tennis. He taught himself A Levels in the downtime after training, working his way through various text books, before applying to the University of London Examination Board to sit his papers in a small room near King s Cross along with students doing their re-sits. Having passed his A Levels, he was accepted by Balliol College, Oxford University to study for a degree in philosophy, politics and economics. He played in the Olympic Games in Barcelona towards the end of his first year at Balliol, and gained a prize-winning First Class degree four months after becoming the British table tennis number one in He is, perhaps unsurprisingly, a strong believer that sporting and academic excellence are not mutually exclusive. Indeed, he argues that developing the body and mind provides a powerful synergy a point well understood by the Ancient Greeks. Matthew was a co-founder and is a trustee of Greenhouse, a charity that empowers youngsters through sport. Greenhouse currently supports more than 10,000 young people on 31 full-time school programmes. He is also a member of the FA s High Performance Committee alongside Sir Dave Brailsford and Baroness Campbell, and an ambassador for the PiXL educational foundation. Tim Rideout Tim has more than 25 years of experience in senior management in the NHS and a sustained track record of health system leadership and management. He joined the NHS as a financial management trainee in 1989 and has since held a number of senior posts across the Midlands. These have included Director of Finance of South Humber Health Authority and North Lincolnshire PCT, and Chief Executive of West Lincolnshire PCT and Leicester City PCT. From 2010 to 2011 Tim led on the establishment of the NHS Commissioning Board, before leaving the NHS to undertake a number of regional and national freelance assignments. Alfie Joey Alfie Joey is a writer, comic, actor, impressionist, singer, presenter and cartoonist who has appeared everywhere from the Comedy Store to Coronation Street. He currently hosts the award winning BBC Newcastle breakfast radio show and is in demand as an event host and stand-up comedian. His comedy impressions appearance on Britain s Got Talent impressed the judges and audience alike and the YouTube clip had well over 1 million views. His stand up work has taken him all over the world with performances in Seoul, Shanghai, Dubai and Singapore.
