From an employer s standpoint, the issue of someone undergoing gender transition can be challenging as coworkers and the residents they serve may not understand, nor have the sensitivity necessary to continue to focus on one s job and not on the person involved. Learn how HR policies may need to be adjusted to protect all concerned. S.A.F.E. reviews critical food safety and sanitation concepts such as personal hygiene, preventing cross contamination, and controlling time and temperature. S.A.F.E. workshops provide food safety training for new employees and refresher information for more experienced staff. Bureau of Health Facilties Administration-Licensing Triple Header Medical Marijuana One Year Later Dispensaries and How to Serve the Needs of Residents John Martin, Manager, Bureau of Licensing and Certification, Department of Health and Human Services We welcome back John Martin for a brief update on where things stand in terms of the creation and start up of the three medical marijuana dispensaries in the state and how residents in need of the use of medical marijuana will access what they need. 1:30 P.M. - 2:30 P.M. Life Safety: What s New, What s Changing and What s On the Horizon? Wendy Smigelski, Life Safety Coordinator, Chris MacDonald, Health Construction Coordinator I and Beth Ferrell, Health Construction Coordinator I, Bureau of Licensing and Certification, N.H. Bureau of Licensing and Certification, Department of Health and Human Services After a two year hiatus, we welcome back Wendy Smigelski for a discussion about important life safety issues including the latest on fire drill and evacuation requirements. Update and Q & A with the Clinical Survey Team and Discussion of the 805 Rules and Status of the 804 Rules Rod Gagne, Stacy Nachman, R.N. and Mae Burke, R.N., Licensing and Evaluation Coordinators, Bureau of Licensing and Certification, N.H. Department of Health and Human Services Next, the new 805s will be the focus of a discussion to remind providers of the important changes in the rules and how those rules are already creating change within member communities. Changes in wound care assessment and care is just one example. We will cap off the session with the opportunity to hear from the bureau s survey team about some of the more common items for which they issue citations and learn about ways to avoid citations in the future.

Carleton, NH DHHS, Bureau of Elderly and Adult Services With the recent retirement of Susan Lombard as our go to operations person within the Bureau of Elderly and Adult Services, we welcome Karen Carleton who is now assuming the role and who will be our contact moving forward. Karen is no stranger to our CFI providers, but in her new role, her contact with our member providers will increase. While this session is open to all NHARCH members, those who are not CFI providers are free to leave immediately before the start of this final session of the day. 4:30 P.M. Sheena Royce of Powers Guaranteed Generators will lead the generator portion of the program and will take your questions. Then, we welcome Ken McGee from Clark Mortenson for a discussion on the importance of having a solid business contingency plan in place. Contingency planning is more than just thinking about emergency planning, it s vital to the continuity and reputation of your business. How might you handle rumors or bad press associated with an incident or problem at your facility? What steps should you be take to protect your facilities reputation? Will you know what to say to your residents, their families or to the press during a time of crisis? Emergency planning and business contingency planning can often go hand-in-hand, especially if an emergency is not handled effectively, but your business contingency plan can be an important tool to keeping your good reputation intact. Approach to Behavioral and Psychological Symtoms of Dementia Dr. Tricia Mendoza, Geriatric Psychiatry Outpatient Medical Team, Frisbie Hospital During her session, Dr. Mendoza will discuss the significant health issues with which our residents struggle with including dementia, Alzheimer s disease, behavioral issues, major depression and other forms of mental illness. 9:30 A.M. - 10:00 A.M. Refreshment Break with Vendors - Sign up for raffles! 10:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M. How to Say No to the Hospital: When Returning to to Your Home is Not an Option Your Right to Say No Michael E. Fleming, Bureau Chief, Bureau of Licensing and Certification, NH Dept. of Health and Human Services, Concord, NH Whether for an acute emergency or for management of a chronic illness, the occasional hospital stay may not significantly impact a resident, but what about a more serious surgery, fracture, or other illness which results in a significant change in your resident? Will you be able to continue to meet their needs? When is it time to evaluate both the resident and the situation, in order to decide whether to take them back or to send them on to a nursing home or other facility offering a higher level of care? Saying no is not something you likely want to say, but there are times when it is in the best interest of the resident to speak up and tell the hospital that it must work to find them another placement. 11:00 A.M. 12:00 P.M. Update from the N.H. Board of Nursing and the Implication of H.B. 484 on Medication Administration by LNAs Carol Brody, MSN, Ed., RN, N.H. Board of Nursing Earlier this year, the N.H. legislature passed H.B. 484 relative to medication administration by LNAs and certain exemptions from regulation for certain nursing care and attendant care services. Though this is an important achievement, further changes in laws and rules under the NH Board of Nursing must fall into play before we know what the true landscape will look like in terms of how medications are handled within the assisted living setting. Presently, the rules governing nurse delegation and their ability to delegate to LNAs (and others) are undergoing changes which could have implications for our facilities that have nurses and LNAs. Carol Brody, RN, will offer an update on the activities of the board and how they relate to medication supervisor and administration within our communities.

Advocacy & Alzheimer s Disease; Making Alzheimer s Disease a Federal and State Priory Heather Carroll, Regional Manager, State of New Hampshire, Alzheimer s Association, MA/NH Chapter The presentation will offer an update on the New Hampshire Federal and State priorities for Alzheimer s and related dementia. It will go over legislation that is in the works as well as recently passed. It will also go over the Alzheimer s Association s presidential primary work and goals. 2:00-4:00 P.M. Front-Line Supervisors/Team Leaders: The Single Most Important, Probably Most Neglected. Group in Your Organization Bruce Mast, President, Bruce Mast & Associates, Inc. A strong case can be made that managing assisted living facilities has gotten, and continues to get, a lot more challenging. On the one hand, there are higher performance expectations from potential residents and their families, the higher levels of acuity (physical, cognitive, emotional) of residents, and the substantial structural changes affecting all aspects of the healthcare delivery system. On the other hand, there is the growing difficulty of finding and developing employees with the capability, attitude, etc. needed to meet these increased demands who are willing to work for the available pay range. The over-arching hypothesis of this (admittedly) ambitious session is that the only sustainable way to keep from being overrun is to find a cost-effective way to build the capability and sophistication of your organization s management systems and managers faster than the growing demands. 2:45 A.M. - 3:00 A.M.
