3 1 Dear friends and neighbors, The report that follows outlines community benefit programs and services offered at Kaleida Health during 2010 by our dedicated physicians, employees and other providers/partners. Many of these services are offered in collaboration with community organizations and philanthropic partners that support our ability to deliver high quality care. The dedication and support of these organizations and individuals are essential to Kaleida Health s ability to serve the healthcare needs of those living in poverty. Despite the downturn in the economy, which produced a greater number of families in need throughout the community, Kaleida Health continued meeting the healthcare needs of this most vulnerable population. On behalf of the 1,800 medical staff members and 10,000 employees at Kaleida Health, I am pleased to share with you this 2010 Community Benefit Report. If you desire additional copies, please call (716) or download a copy at Sincerely, James R. Kaskie President and CEO Kaleida Health In Kaleida Health participated in 74 community health and wellness screenings and informational health fairs at community centers, churches, schools and senior centers throughout Western New York, reaching 92,370 participants.
4 2 Financial assistance Kaleida Health offers assistance to access affordable health care, including: The Kaleida Health Financial Assistance Program provides free or reduced-prices for patients treated at Kaleida Health hospitals, outpatient centers, emergency rooms, or longterm care facilities. Applications for financial assistance are available at any Kaleida Health hospital, outpatient center, by telephone at or at Kaleida Health Facilitated Enrollers assist individuals with health insurance enrollment by offering education and application assistance for Medicaid, Child Health Plus, Family Health Plus, the Prenatal Care Assistance Program, and/or State Aid for Children with Special Needs. For more information, call (716) Facilitated enrollers are available at Kaleida Health facilities and at numerous community-based organizations. Community Health needs assessment Kaleida Health assesses the health of the community through several means, including (but not limited to) reviewing local health needs assessments, such as: Kaleida Health: Community and Provider Health Care Assessment (January 2009) Erie County Department of Health Community Health Assessment (March 2010) Community%20Health%20Assessment%2003.pdf
5 3 Niagara County Department of Health Community Health Assessment (September 2009) Project CODA: Creating Options for Dignified Aging in Erie and Niagara Counties (June 2009) CODA_final_06_30_2009.pdf Western New York Health Care Safety Net Assessment (February 2008) Health_Care_ Safety_Net_Assessment_2008_Feb_Final_Report.pdf Reaching for Excellence: Community Vision and Voices for WNY Health Care (July 2009) ACommunityReport.pdf Kaleida Health utilizes the results of these and other community health needs assessments to shape strategy for prioritizing its efforts and identifying areas of focus for community benefit programs and interventions. Many community benefit programs and services offered by Kaleida Health focus on the elderly, lowincome individuals and families, children and youth, women, and persons with special needs. In Approximately 50,000 individuals were assisted with health insurance enrollment by Kaleida Health staff; 25,475 applications for health insurance were processed.
