2 About The Association The Maine Health Care Association is a statewide association of providers of services to Maine s older and disabled populations. MHCA represents more than 300 adult day service providers, assisted living/residential care facilities, home health service providers, independent living/congregate housing providers, nursing facilities, rehabilitation and skilled nursing providers, and other organizations and individuals who provide housing, health care and supportive services to more than 10,000 Maine residents. The mission of the Maine Health Care Association is to promote and advance the delivery of high quality health care, housing and supportive services to meet the needs of Maine s older and disabled populations. Program Description: Climate change, increasing energy demands, limited resources, and diminishing energy supplies are likely to have an impact on how energy affects your organization in the future. Is your facility prepared for the energy challenges that lie ahead? Becoming energy efficient isn t a difficult process nor does it require significant capital expenditures. If a few operational changes had the potential to significantly reduce your operating expenses and, ultimately, your bottom line, doesn't it make good business sense to give it consideration? This workshop is designed to offer an overview of operations and maintenance best practices, tools and resources for managing your building, energy fundamentals, energy accounting, using benchmarks to evaluate your performance, energy audits, energy conservation, and more. Good care goes beyond providing for the basic medical and physical needs of our residents. How a facility operates has a significant impact on the health and wellness of our residents. Presenter: Rickard Meinking is a Certified Building Operator with over 18 years of facility operations and maintenance experience. After spending 9 years in the Active duty Navy, Rick began his career as a maintenance man for a large Property Management company and was later promoted to Maintenance Director. Rick has also served as a Maintenance Director for a commercial building owner and, later, as the Facility Manager for a Maine School Administrative District. Rick has been the Plant Operations Director for Seventy Five State Street in Portland for nine years. For the past five years, he has been involved in helping many facilities with energy efficiency issues as well as improving the facilities operations and maintenance activities. He has spoken at many conferences on subjects ranging from computerized maintenance management systems, maintenance work order systems, and energy efficiency measures. For the last eight years he has been Maine Health Care Associations Chairman for the Environmental Services Committee. 5 Ethical Challenges for the Geriatric Social Worker: Mastering a Sound Decision Making Process Dates/Locations: February 10, 2009 Hilton Garden Inn (Freeport) June 19, 2009 Senator Inn & Spa (Augusta) Time: 8:00 AM Registration 8:30 AM 4:00 PM Educational Program Audience: Licensed Social Workers and Conditionally Licensed Social Workers with an interest in ethical decision-making would benefit from attending this workshop. This program is designed especially for Social Workers who provide services to individuals in a Long Term Care facility but other Social Workers are welcome to participate. Program Description: Social workers serving residents living in a long term care facility face multifaceted ethical challenges and decisions on a daily basis. Complex issues such as resident rights, family dynamics, care at the end of life, intimacy between consulting residents, caregiver stress, resident abuse, neglect and exploitation, and similar circumstances present ethical challenges that demand careful consideration and a sound decision making process. Through the use of lecture, discussion, instructional videos, case studies and group work, participants in this workshop with have the opportunity to utilize the NASW Code of Ethics and a decision making model to develop an ethical framework for addressing ethical dilemmas in long term care. Case studies and instructional videos will offer a framework for identifying, defining, discussing and resolving complex issues and enhancing the quality of life for residents in Maine's long term care facilities. Presenter: Kelly Mills-Dick, MSW, is a Lecturer in the Social Work Department at Skidmore College. She received her MSW at the University of California at Berkeley and is currently a doctoral candidate in Sociology and Social Work at Boston University. Ms. Mills-Dick has been in the field of gerontology for over 10 years, with experience in a variety of long-term care settings, including skilled nursing facilities, assisted living, and dementia care facilities. She has both clinical and research experience in the areas of housing and homelessness among older adults, and geriatric mental health and substance abuse. Previously, Ms. Mills-Dick was the Curriculum and Evaluation Manager at the Institute for Geriatric Social Work at Boston University where she helped to design and evaluate education and training programs in geriatric social work. 6 End of Life Educational Series: Tools & Strategies for Creating an Effective End of Life Care Program Date: February 26, 2009 Location: Maine Health Care Association Augusta Time: 12:30 AM Registration 1:00 PM 4:00 PM Educational Program Audience: This educational series is intended to raise awareness as well as offer up to date information and resources designed to help providers enhance the quality of care provided to residents at the end of life. It is intended for owners, administrators, directors of nursing, department managers, nurses, social workers, therapists, activity professionals, and any other individuals interested in learning to communicate clearly about end of life issues, help residents face end of life decisions, honor residents' wishes, and implement the services that will ensure the best possible care when they are nearing the end of life. Program Description: Long Term Care Facilities are increasingly becoming the final place of care for many of our elders and adults with chronic illness. Currently 25% of persons with chronic illnesses die in nursing facilities. With the growing number of elderly persons being discharged from hospitals quicker and sicker", and this trend may continue to be on the rise. This session was originally presented as a break out session at MHCA's 2006 Fall Conference and it was very well attended. Participants will learn how to develop a vision for improving end of life care in your facilities as well as discover some of the practical tools that can help transform that vision into a reality. Topics to be addressed will include: pain management, advanced care planning and physician orders, collaborating with community based hospice programs, recruiting hospice volunteers, creating an end of life care team, accessing the right tools for training and development, developing protocols for identifying residents with palliative care needs, life review and bereavement programs and tools for quality improvement. Education is the first step in developing a strong end of life program in your facility. Maine's long term care providers have shown a strong commitment to providing quality care to their residents. Responding to the urgent need for improving end of life care is simply a reflection of your dedication to your residents. 7 End of Life Educational Series: Educating Direct Care Staff on End of Life Care Date: March 26, 2009 Location: Maine Health Care Association Augusta Time: 12:30 AM Registration 1:00 PM 4:00 PM Educational Program Audience: This educational series is intended to raise awareness as well as offer up to date information and resources designed to help providers enhance the quality of care provided to residents at the end of life. This particular session is intended for nurse educators who provide end of life and palliative care training to direct care staff. In addition, owners, administrators, directors of nursing, department managers, nurses, social workers, therapists, activity professionals, and other individuals who are responsible for leading and directing caregivers are welcome to participate. Program Description: Education is the key to providing quality end of life care to residents living in a long term care setting. This training offers a curriculum adaptation of the key concepts outlined in the book "Improving Nursing Home Care of the Dying" written by Martha Henderson, Laura Hanson, and Kimberly Reynolds. Attendees will receive a copy of the book as well as an electronic copy of the power point curriculum adapted from the information provided in this textbook. Topics from all 8 modules will be discussed in detail and include these topics: envisioning a good death, recognizing the final phase of life, grief and loss, advance care planning, choices about eating and drinking, pain management, emotional and spiritual, and caring for the care giver. 8 Certified Residential Medication Aide (CRMA) and Recertification Course Descriptions & Process The Certified Residential Medication Aide (CRMA) courses follow the standardized CRMA curriculum designed and provided by the State of Maine, Division of Licensing & Regulatory Services, Community Services Programs. The curriculum requires hours of classroom time offered over five days, as well as a clinical component under the supervision of a clinical supervisor (RN). Upon successful completion of this course, participants will obtain a certificate from the State of Maine and be certified to provide medication administration in the residential setting. Re-certification is required every two years. The registration fee includes all training materials. Class enrollment will be limited to 12 participants. The one-day CRMA Recertification course is designed for CRMA s to maintain certification to administer medications in residential care facilities. In addition, an individual wishing to upgrade from a 24-hour to a 40-hour certificate may take this course as a Bridge (see page 12 for details). Recertification training is required every two years and MUST be completed no later than 30 days beyond the expiration date. If a CRMA s certificate has expired, the individual must CEASE administering medications until he/she has been recertified. The Fortiter (CRMA Recertification) Study Guide is available on the MHCA web site (see Professional Development page, Schedule of Upcoming Education). Class enrollment will be limited to 15 participants. Things to Remember: In this article, we have taken the liberty of reminding you of the key components of each course. Please take the time to carefully review this information. CRMA 40-Hour Course: The curriculum is designed to be taught in hours. The course covers State of Maine regulations, standard residential facility policies, basic anatomy and physiology, common medications in the majority of drug classes, and the practice of safe medication administration procedures. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to practice taking vital signs, transcribing physician orders, administering medications in the classroom setting and completing medication cards/worksheets or some other type of learning tool. Discussion will focus on the uses of medications, common side effects as well as the client s response to the medication side effects. Once enrolled, participants must complete all classroom and clinical components, without exception. Mock med passes are completed as part of the classroom experience. In addition, participants are required to perform 3 med passes supervised by an RN in a clinical setting. Documentation of these med passes is due within 45 days of the completion of the course. Grading is based on the following: 25% participation, 25% final exam (must pass with 80%), 50% module quizzes (must pass with 80%), and clinical (pass/fail). 7
9 Certified Residential Medication Aide (CRMA) and Recertification Course Descriptions & Process (continued) CRMA Recertification Course: The CRMA 8-hour Re-Certification course and the Bridge Course have been combined into this one 8-hour course. This course is still designed as a competency based testing program. Students coming into this course should already possess the knowledge base in order to successfully pass with the required grade. There is no curriculum, however, the Fortiter (CRMA Recertification) Study Guide is available on the MHCA web site (see Professional Development page, Schedule of Upcoming Education). We recommend that, when you register your staff for the recertification, you provide instruction to each individual on how to access the study guide and encourage them to spend time preparing for the recertification course. In order to participate in the Recertification / Bridge Course each student must come to the class with the following items in hand: Copy of the Current CRMA Certificate A photo ID As a reminder, in order to become recertified, each student must successfully complete all of the following without exception: 1. Transcription Exercise: This portion is pass/fail and designed to test the student s ability to transcribe doctor s orders onto a MAR with 100% accuracy. Students who cannot complete the transcription exercise with 100% accuracy will not be able to continue the recertification course. 2. Mock Med Pass: This portion is pass/fail and designed to test the student s ability to pass the meds transcribed from the doctor s orders using the MAR completed in the transcription exercise with 100% accuracy with a maximum of two (2) times. Students who cannot complete the Mock Med Pass with 100% accuracy will not be able to continue the recertification course. 3. Final Exam: The student must pass the final written exam with an 80% or better. If the student does not complete the items listed above, they will be required to retake the course in its entirety. CRMA Bridge Requirements: A student can upgrade from a 24-hr certificate to the 40-hr certificate by completing the following: Passing the 8-hour recertification course, and Completing a minimum of 3 actual med passes, supervised by an RN in a clinical setting, within 45 days of the end of the class. The Bridge Clinical Checklist must be completed and sent in with the final paperwork. 8

12 Certificate Course Listing Personal Support Specialist (PSS): This 50-hour training is designed for unlicensed entry-level workers. Successful completion of this course satisfies training requirements for direct care workers for certain home care programs and residential care facilities. The PSS curriculum is a standard curriculum and replaces any programs previously approved for Personal Care Attendants (PCAs) and Residential Care Specialists I (RCS 1s). 13 Program Policies & General Information Registration You are strongly encouraged to register early as space for MHCA programs may be limited. To register for an upcoming educational program, MHCA must receive a completed Registration/Invoice Form via regular mail, fax or an online registration form. Registrations cannot be accepted over the telephone. Full payment must be received at least 5 business days prior to the start date of the program to confirm your enrollment. Tuition Fees for programs may vary as they reflect specific costs for each program. MHCA strives to keep tuition fair, affordable and consistent. Payment is required at the time of registration or at least 5 business days prior to the start date of the program. Acceptable forms of payment include cash, checks and credit cards. For programs with limited enrollment, priority will be granted to paid participants. Group Discount If a facility is registering more than one (1) participant for the same educational program, a discount of $10.00 for each additional participant from the same facility may apply. Since fees vary based on the costs for each program, MHCA reserves the right to decide when group discounts can be offered. Group Discounts are not applicable to Certificate Courses. Note: Group discounts for the Fall Health Care Conference & Expo is applied differently; please refer to the conference registration packet for more information about group discounts for that event. Confirmation Letters With the exception of the Fall Health Care Conference & Expo, confirmation letters (including driving directions) are sent to all registrants approximately one week prior to the program. Anyone registering less than a week in advance may not receive written confirmation. However participants are always welcome to contact MHCA to verify registration. Substitutions If a registrant is unable to attend a program, a substitute from the same facility can register to take his/her place at no additional charge. If possible, MHCA would like to receive advanced notice of the substitution (including substitute s name) however, walk-in substitutions are also accepted. Certificate of Attendance A Certificate of Attendance will be provided to all registered participants at the end of each workshop. Certificates of attendance for substitutes will not be available the day of the program. Note: Certificates for Personal Support Specialist (PSS) and Certified Residential Medication Aide (CRMA) courses are not issued by MHCA. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) When a program meets the appropriate criteria, Continuing Education Units (CEU s) may be granted to participants as long as proof of attendance can be verified. MHCA retains on-site sign in sheets and other documentation for programs where CEUs are granted. In order to earn the number of CEUs a program is approved for, you must be present for the entire session. Partial CEUs will not be granted except for extenuating circumstances. In this case, the attendee must notify a MHCA staff member at the point of departure so that a certificate with the appropriate number of CEUs can be issued. 12
14 Program Policies & General Information Canceled Programs MHCA reserves the right to cancel programs due to low enrollment or for other extenuating circumstances. Under normal conditions, if a program is canceled, registrants will be notified in advance by telephone, or fax. In the event of inclement weather, the Director of Education will make a decision concerning cancellation by 6:00 AM on the day of the program. Only if a change has been made will MHCA s voic message be modified. For updated information about the status of a program, participants are encouraged to contact MHCA at (207) after 6:00 AM. If a program is canceled due to inclement weather, we will make every effort to reschedule as soon as possible. If we are unable to do that in a timely fashion, a full credit or refund will be granted to all registrants. If inclement weather prompts a delayed start time or an early dismissal, the Director of Education in collaboration with the instructor will determine how to adjust the schedule in order to adequately cover the content and we will offer CEU credit within the appropriate guidelines. Enrollment Caps MHCA reserves the right to limit the number of participants for certain workshops. When enrollment is limited, registrations will be accepted based on a first come/first served basis with paid registrations having priority placement in the program. Refunds All cancellations must be submitted in writing. For General Seminars, a 100% credit/refund will be issued if written notice of cancellation is received at least 10 days in advance of the program; cancellations received 1 to 9 days in advance will be charged a $25 late withdrawal fee; and no credit/refund will be issued for cancellations the day of the program (or no shows). For the Fall Conference and Leadership Symposium, a 100% credit/refund will be issued if written notice of cancellation is received at least 10 days in advance of the program; otherwise no credit/refund will be granted. For Certificate Programs (CRMA, CRMA Recertification, PSS, ServSafe), a 100% credit/refund will be issued if written notice of cancellation is received at least 5 business days in advance of the program; otherwise no credit/refund will be granted. 15 Call for Presentations The Maine Health Care Association invites you to submit written proposals for educational seminars. To submit a presentation proposal, please indicate which program you are submitting the proposal for. Multiple proposals may be submitted using separate copies of the form. General Seminars General seminars are half-day to full-day programs offered on a variety of topics throughout the year. Seminar proposals should target one or more of the following: owners, administrators, business/financial staff, activity coordinators, dietary/food service staff, environmental services personnel, directors of nursing/nursing staff, social work professionals and direct care staff. Assisted Living/Independent Living Conference - April 2009 The goal is to offer topics of interest and relevance to adult foster care homes, assisted living programs, independent living, and residential care facilities. Topics will be geared toward owners, administrators, business/financial staff, directors of nursing, and department heads.
