1 Philippines Definitive Surgical Trauma Care (DSTC) Course PH Gains Presence in Asia Pacific Photos (Left-Right): Participants learn how to prioritize competing trauma injuries as Course Faculty teach surgical decision making and different techniques of repair; participants pose for a groupfie with the DSTC Faculty led by Dr. Narain Chotirosniramit, Head of the Trauma and Critical Care Unit of the Trauma Center Office of Mahgarajnakorn Chiangmai Hospital in Thailand, and Atty./Dr. Joel Macalino, DSTC Course Director and attending Surgeon at the Division of Trauma Surgical Intensive Care of the Philippine General Hospital. THE DEFINITVE Surgical Trauma Care (DSTC) COURSE in the Philippines, a collaborative effort of (AA) Philippines and the Philippine Society for the Surgery of Trauma (PSST), is slowly gaining presence in the Asia Pacific region with the participation of foreign delegates in the 4 th DSTC Course conducted on June 10-12, 2016 at the Philippine Center for Advanced Surgery (PCAS) in Cardinal Santos Medical Center, San Juan City. A feather in the cap of AA Philippines, the DSTC Course has been running in the country since 2014, and has reached its highest attendance so far this June with a total of 18 participants, including a consultant from UKM Medical Center in Malaysia and a surgical resident from Singapore s Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Developed under the auspices of the International Association for Trauma and Surgical Intensive Care (IATSIC), the DSTC Course aims to address the process of surgical decision-making and operative techniques involved in the management of lifethreatening injuries in the trauma patient. The intensive three-day course is a mixture of lecture-based learning, case discussion, and handson surgical skills training which involves probabilities of organ injuries, technical surgical strategies, and decision making in trauma surgery The course faculty for the 4 th DSTC Course was led by Dr. Officers and members of PSST completed the roster of local faculty.
2 Philippines Philippine Oncology Nurses Association Seals Its 5th Year of Partnership with AA Photos (Clockwise): Signing of Memorandum of Agreement between PONA and (AA); PONA President Edilaida Garcia facilitates the station on the standard operating procedures in preparing and administering chemotherapy drugs through a central venous access device; using a dummy arm, participants demonstrate how to administer drugs through a peripheral intravenous line; participants learn how to infuse the right rate and dosage of drugs with the help of an infusion pump; guided by a set of questions, participants develop critical thinking skills required prior to the administration of chemotherapy treatment; and, participants learn how to calculate drug dosage and rate of administration, as well as verify if values are within acceptable parameters. THE PHILIPPINE Oncology Nurses Association of the Philippines (PONA) and AA kicked off its 5th year of partnership with the back-to-back conduct of the enhanced modules for the Basic Chemotherapy Course for Nurses as well as the Advanced Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Course on May 24 and 30-31, respectively, at the AA facility in Taguig City. calculation, and procedural tasks aimed to adequately prepare them, as oncology nurses, in chemotherapy preparation and administration. Around 50 nurses from different hospitals and cancer centers in Metro Manila, Luzon and the Visayas completed the requirements of the 2 courses and received the first ever PONA Chemotherapy Nurse Identification Card. As part of the requirements of the improved modules, participants were provided more critical thinking exercises, which centered on actual clinical-based scenarios that challenged both their cognitive and clinical skills, and evaluated their initial response by applying the fundamental chemotherapy concepts learned during the didactic sessions. In addition, participants underwent a more exigent skills training comprised of a timed chemotherapy drug On July 5 and August 11-12, PONA and AA organized another round of the Basic and Advanced courses which trained a total of 83 nurses. 2 2 PONA and AA officially renewed their partnership on May 30 with PONA President Edilaida Garcia and B. Braun Philippines Managing Director Lih Chyun Yeong representing the two organizations.
3 Philippines Association of Training Officers in Surgery Intensifies Leadership Workshops for Fellows and Residents HARD SKILLS obtained through years or learning or practice can make a professional work excellently in their field. And, it is under this thrust that (AA) recognizes how technical skills are important factor in determining the competency level of healthcare professionals. However, soft skills are equally important especially in developing quality leaders who will pave the way for the improvement of the healthcare system in the Philippines. In 2009, AA partnered with the Philippine Association of Training Officers in Surgery (PATOS) in conducting leadership and management trainings for its Fellows. Having been recognized as PATOS s official school, AA, with the support of the Closure Technologies Division of B. Braun, manages the three annual seminars and workshops of the Association which have already gained recognition among surgeons all over the country as evidenced by more surgical training officers and members of allied healthcare professionals enrolling in the programs. This year, PATOS and AA reached a milestone with the successful simultaneous conduct of the 2 nd Leadership Summit for training officers and the 1 st Leadership Workshop for Surgery Residents which were both conducted on August 3 at the AA facility in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City. A total of 69 training officers, including allied health professionals from Asian Hospital and Medical Center, attended the 2nd Leadership Summit which tackled leadership in the healthcare workplace and academic setting; work-life integration for effective leadership; and, new trends in leadership concepts. On the other hand, 59 surgery residents participated in the first-ever leadership workshop designed to provide senior residents with the basic leadership principles that will equip them with competencies in handling such issues as disruptive behavior and violence in the workplace, as well as in managing the different temperaments of people around them. Meanwhile, the Effective Communication seminar conducted at the Seda Atria Hotel in Iloilo City on May 12 and the special two-day run of the session on The Training Officer as a Teacher Expert in Chong Hua Hospital in Cebu City on June were likewise a success after having recorded a total combined number of 100 participants. Subject matter experts who discussed the different leadership topics include the PATOS Officers Drs. Shirard Adiviso (President), Jorge Concepcion (Vice-President), Melbert Gulfan (Treasurer), and Board of Directors Drs Malen Gellido, Michael James Busa, Alfred Lasala III; PATOS Past President Dr. Robert So; Past President of the Philippine College of Surgeons, Dr. Maximo Simbulan, Jr.; President and Medical Director of Adventist Medical Center Bacolod, Dr. Hector Gayares, Jr.; Vice President for Academic Affairs of the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center, Dr. Gemiliano Aligui; and, Managing Consultant for Sales Operation of Franklin Covey and Professor at the Ateneo Graduate School of Business, Mennen Aracid. The next leadership seminar is scheduled on December 3 at the. 3 3
4 Philippines Key Hospitals in Cebu and Manila Participate in WHO Hand Hygiene Audit & Monitoring Workshop Photos (Left-Right): Infection Control Nurse Felicia Teo presents the World Health Organization (WHO) hand hygiene guidelines, as well as hand hygiene observation techniques and practices; participants watch WHO training videos featuring hand hygiene practices; using case scenarios, participants go through the WHO Self-Assessment Framework to identify key issues requiring attention and improvement; participants share best practices in hand hygiene compliance. IN PREPARATION for the Hand Hygiene Excellence Award, a joint collaboration of the World Health Organization (WHO) and (AA) Global, a Hand Hygiene Audit Workshop was conducted on June at the Harold s Hotel in Cebu City and the AA facility in Taguig City to equip professionals, who are in charge of implementing a strategy to improve hand hygiene in the hospital, with knowledge in monitoring and auditing hand hygiene compliance using the WHO s Self-Assessment Framework a systematic tool designed to obtain a situation analysis of hand hygiene promotion and practices within a healthcare facility. Felicia Teo, an Infection Control Nurse and the Clinical Educator for Infection Prevention of Asia Pacific, provided participants a comprehensive review of the new WHO Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Healthcare and its role in the reduction of healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs). With the aid of WHO s training videos on hand hygiene practices, the 53 participants, who are mostly Infection Control Nurses, performed audit and monitoring exercises using the WHO Self- Assessment Tools. They also shared best practices as well as their plans and programs to monitor and audit hand hygiene compliance in their respective healthcare facility. Chong Hua Hospital, Cebu Doctors University Hospital, St. Vincent General Hospital, University of Cebu Medical Center, St. Luke s Medical Center, Asian Hospital, Philippine Children's Medical Center, Philippine Heart Center, Calamba Medical Center, Jose Reyes Hospital, UST Hospital, The Medical City, Unihealth Southwoods Hospital, and Lung Center of the Philippines were among the hospitals that participated in the audit workshop. Young Tiger Program: Basic Clinical Skills Training for Medical Students IN FULFILLMENT of the corporate claim of Sharing Expertise, AA and B. Braun collaborated once again with the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health (ASMPH) in training its 166 Year Level 7 students on the proper and aseptic technique in inserting intravenous (IV) cannula. On 23 May, under the guidance of certified IV Therapists from the Philippine Heart Center, students practiced on dummy arm models using safety IV Cannula. To further augment the skills training, students also performed actual catheter insertion on each another, with strict instructions to follow the guidelines of the Association of Nursing Service Administrators of the Philippines (ANSAP) on safe cannulation. In this file photo, a participant tries her hand at IV cannulation, with the guidance of a preceptor. 4 ASMPH, AA and B. Braun have been partners in educating medical students since 2010 when the annual Basic Clinical Skills Training was first offered. 4
