Braun Managing Director; Juan Miguel Ignacio, B. Braun Product Manager; and, Ma. Cecilia Victoria Cannon, Aesculap Academy Manager. AA Strengthens Partnership with Association of Nurse Administrators A MEMORANDUM of agreement has been signed between B. Braun Philippines, through its continuing education arm Aesculap Academy, and the Association of Nursing Service Administrators of the Philippines, Inc. (ANSAP) last March 17, ensuring the continuation of safe and quality nursing practices in intravenous therapy through its Intravenous Therapy Refresher Courses. The Intravenous Therapy Refresher Courses are designed to provide nurses with the latest information and skills related to infusion therapy. The three-day program gives participants 24 continuing education units, which may be applied for renewal of ANSAP IV Therapy Cards. Since 2004, the course has seen a total of 25,754 nurses taught over 362 courses. Under the renewed MOA spanning March 17, 2016 to March 17, 2019, the Intravenous Therapy Refresher Courses will continue to be offered in Aesculap Academy, in coordination with ANSAP, utilizing qualified lecturers and trainers as designated by ANSAP s board of directors. Representing B. Braun Philippines during the MOA signing in the Manila Hotel were Managing Director Lih Chyun Yeong and Aesculap Academy Manager Ma. Cecilia Victoria Cannon, with ANSAP representatives President Dr. Maria Linda Buhat and ANSAP Healthcare Institute Director Dr. Elsa Castro. Aesculap Academy is an independent division of B. Braun, involved in providing continuing education to healthcare practitioners through partnerships with strategic medical and allied societies. - Katherine Rose Francisco, B. 2 Aesculap Academy PH Completes 50th Hemodialysis Training Program for Nurses ON 29 FEBRUARY 2016, 38 aspiring renal nurses graduated from Aesculap Academy and B. Braun Avitum s 50 th Hemodialysis Training Program for Nurses. First offered in 2007, the Hemodialysis Training is known among young Filipino nurses as one of the most comprehensive seminars on renal nursing available in the country. On top of the week-long didactics, which equips participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide hemodialysis treatment and efficient care to renal patients, it also includes a four-week clinical skills training in a B. Braun Dialysis Center in which participants are able to apply the principles of hemodialysis in an actual dialysis facility. Class topnotcher Amazing Grace M. Carlos shares her experience during the training: I felt more confident with my skills especially when cannulating. I was able to familiarize myself with machine operation, including priming, termination, disinfection and troubleshooting. This course has also taught me to be flexible. I was not just a renal nurse during our training but also a dialysis technician and, I loved it! Nurses and Techs Enhance Skills in Dialysis Treatment and participating B. Braun dialysis centers. Having recognized the dialysis technician s role as member of the renal healthcare team, the 24 participants were trained on the principles of water treatment system, basic piping procedure, and dialyzer reprocessing. Daniel Romano, an aspiring technician, said that he was clueless on how dialysis works and what technicians do; and, the course helped a lot in giving him the needed information and skills. Participants with Mr. Eduardo Rodriguez, Managing Director of B. Braun Avitum Philippines (fifth from right) and Course Director Muhammad Hanif (fourth from Left). AS PART of Aesculap Academy s comprehensive education program on renal care, a Dialysis Technician Course (DCT) was conducted on April 4-29 at the Aesculap Academy facility Another participant, Sherwin Chu, who is also a nurse, shared, [the course] was a big help on my part, especially about the [water] system, because all of the things that I have experienced in the unit is more on patient care only. The DCT course complements the clinical skills being taught during the Hemodialysis Training, as well as provides technical skills necessary for nurses who wish to work outside the Philippines. 2
3 AA, ORNAP Educate a Hundred Nurses Thru Periop Nursing Workshops AESCULAP ACADEMY (AA) and the Operating Room Nurses Association of the Philippines, Inc. (ORNAP), led by its President Aurora Aralar and Continuing Education Chair Odella Antonio, conducted a series of seminars and workshops on perioperative nursing from January to April A total of 114 participants from different hospitals in Metro Manila nearby provinces in Luzon attended the four learning sessions which focused on the most common surgical procedures in the Philippines: cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, and laparoscopy, including the proper care and maintenance of surgical instruments. Medical experts in the field of surgery were invited to discuss the anatomy and surgical procedures as well as the roles of nurses as members of the surgical team, as seen from the eyes of a surgeon. Highly skilled and experienced perioperative nurses from the Philippine General Hospital, Philippine Heart Center and St. Luke s Medical Center, on the other hand, talked about the standard operating procedures for each surgery as well as the competencies required of operating room nurses. The course is an eye-opener Learning must go on because there are new trends in the [perioperative nursing] field that we must be familiar with. Sterile Processing Specialists certified by the German Sterile Supply, Rony Fajilagutan, RN and Dr. Bong Castro, also discussed the instrument cycle, and demonstrated how to perform various tests to check the functionality of the surgical instruments. Participants were especially appreciative of the hands-on workshop, in which they had first-hand experience in handling different basic and special instruments, and also shared best practices with nurses from other institutions. The course is an eye-opener Learning must go on because there are new trends in the [perioperative nursing] field that we must be familiar with, shared one participant. ORNAP and AA have been in partnership since 2010 and are due to renew the memorandum of agreement after the ORNAP National Convention in July Photos (Top-Bottom): Dr. Avenilo L. Aventura, Jr., a Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery Consultant from the Philippine Heart Center provides a review of the anatomy of the heart and circulatory system as well as an overview of Coronary Artery Bypass Graft; Mark Mendoza, a Minimally Invasive and Robotics Operating Room Nurse from St. Lukes Medical Center - Global City discusses the phases of operative nursing care in minimally invasive surgery; Lydia De Castro, Vice-President of ORNAP and Head Nurse from the Philippine General Hospital demonstrates the use of different surgical instruments for neurosurgery; German Certified Sterile Processing Specialist Dr. Bong Castro demonstrates how to perform visual inspection on surgical instruments. 3
