4 Founding of Seattle Children s Children s was founded in 1907 by Anna Clise after the death of her young son from inflammatory rheumatism. The founding vision of Children s, that all children should receive care regardless of the complexity of illness or injury and their ability to pay, still holds true today.
5 Growing Seattle Children s 2004 Our research efforts expanded with the move to dedicated facilities in South Lake Union to eventually become one of the nation s top five pediatric research centers. Seattle Children s Research Institute is dedicated to making breakthrough discoveries that help prevent, treat and cure childhood disease.
6 Growing Seattle Children s 2004 The Janet Sinegal Patient Care Building expanded inpatient beds to a total of The Melinda French Gates Ambulatory Care Building opened to meet increasing demand for outpatient clinics.
7 Growing Seattle Children s Building Hope provided additional beds for our most critical patients
8 Outreach and Regional Services Seattle Children s is the regional pediatric referral center for children in the northwest
9 Our Mission We provide hope, care and cures to help every child live the healthiest and most fulfilling life possible.
10 Our Vision Seattle Children s will be an innovative leader in pediatric health and wellness through our unsurpassed quality, clinical care, relentless spirit of inquiry, and compassion for children and their families. Our founding promise to the community is as valid today as it was over a century ago. We will care for all children in our region, regardless of their family s ability to pay.
11 Methods for Success This house symbolizes Children s approach to success by always placing Patients and Families first, supported by an emphasis on Quality, Cost, Delivery and Safety. The foundation of the house relies on the engagement efforts of our staff.

17 Patient Safety Compliance with National Patient Safety Goals is top Priority for Children s Significant work underway to: Improve hand hygiene Reduce rate of hospital acquired infections Guarantee right procedure on right patient Ensure timely receipt of test results Eliminate use of dangerous abbreviations
18 Health and Safety Precautions Review Guidelines for Infection Control. Become familiar with the standard precaution symbols. Always wash hands or use gel when entering and leaving a patient room. Watch for and follow signs on patient doors.
19 Health and Safety Precautions Occupational Health Feeling Okay? Compliance with immunization requirements Stay home if you are ill If you become sick at work, notify your supervisor If you have been exposed to a communicable disease notify OHS immediately Symptoms indicating you should stay home: Fever (38ºC/100.4ºF, or higher) Skin eruptions with drainage Uncontrollable runny nose, sneezing, coughing Prolonged sore throat; cough lasting more than 2 weeks Influenza-like illness Diarrhea (associated with acute illness) Nausea/vomiting
20 Health and Safety Precautions Report injuries to supervisor immediately Complete an efeedback for injuries only Call to report exposure to bloodborne pathogens or communicable diseases For adult medical emergencies at the hospital, call
21 Health and Safety Precautions Stay safe on the job by practicing good back safety Use good judgement; ask for assistance, particularly for lifts and transfers When lifting bend knees, not back Keep center of gravity low and close to body Don t bend over patients Pivot, don t twist Maintain healthy weight and conditioning
22 Health and Safety Precautions Chemical Safety Chemicals are used everywhere: It s your Right to Know what they are and how to use them safely Hazardous materials in your area to be covered in department orientation Safety Data Sheets (SDS) provide authoritative info about chemicals. SDS information is listed on Children s intranet site. For on-site assistance with chemicals, contact Environmental Services
23 Health and Safety Precautions Children s expects you to provide a safe work environment by following all policies. Unsafe behaviors are not acceptable. Think Safe! Work Safe! Be Safe!
24 Emergency Response Procedures You will receive a pocket guide when you are issued your photo ID badge It contains all emergency and safety phone numbers and emergency procedures for fire, earthquake, bomb threat, hazardous materials and medical emergencies Please keep this with your ID badge at all times Think Safe! Work Safe! Be Safe!
25 Emergency Codes & Procedures FIRE CODE RED If you see or suspect a fire, follow these actions: -- Remove patients/ staff from the immediate area -- Activate the alarm by calling from any internal phone -- Confine the fire by shutting the doors and windows -- Extinguish the fire, or evacuate to safety Think Safe! Work Safe! Be Safe!
26 Emergency Codes and Procedures FIRE CODE RED If you use a fire extinguisher: Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher Aim the nozzle towards the base of the fire Squeeze and release the handle to discharge the extinguisher Sweep the nozzle back and forth slowly at the base of the fire
27 Patient Information, Privacy and Security Children s takes patient privacy seriously and any violations to policies will not be tolerated. Children s requires all staff to be compliant with existing policies and expects staff to: Protect patient information in any form Ensure the accuracy and integrity of patient information Keep your passwords private Call the Privacy Helpline with any questions

29 Compliance Corporate Compliance Children s must obey laws pertaining to billing, reimbursement, employment, Medicare/ Medicaid, etc. Employee vigilance helps prevent activities that may violate laws and regulations Report compliance concerns to your Seattle Children s sponsor, or if needed, you can report concerns anonymously by calling Seattle Children s Corporate Compliance Officer is Pru Arnquist
