5 4 Patient Rights Patients have rights that are to be honored and met. These include the right to: Effective communication Be involved in the plan of care Considerate, safe, and responsible care Privacy and confidentiality

6 Protected Health Information (HIPAA) In order to maintain the confidentiality of patient information, the HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) rule addresses protected health information (PHI). PHI is accessed only on a need to know basis. We use a PIN number to address who receives patient information. We never release information related to AIDS/HIV status, psychiatric treatment, substance, or alcohol abuse-even with a PIN # PHI is information that can identify a patient This information includes: Name Date of birth, social security number Address, phone number, fax number, and address Names of relatives Photographs Medical record numbers or health information, such as history and laboratory or radiology results

7 Confidential Information Health care providers and students can read medical records only when they are involved in: Treatment Education Quality assurance Research Utilization review The use of identifiable medical record information for activities other than treatment, payment, or health care operations is prohibited. You should never read a chart if you are not involved in the patent s care. Failure to maintain confidentiality can result in dismissal from the hospital and charges for invasion of privacy

8 Discussions of Patient Care Information Health care staff discuss patient care information to share information and the treatment plan Every effort should be made to protect the privacy of the patient by minimizing the risk that others will overhear the conversation The discussion of PHI should never be done in public areas such as the cafeteria or elevators Use shredder boxes to dispose of any papers that might identify a patient

9 Safeguarding Electronic Records Health care students may have has access to confidential information via electronic records. The confidentiality of these electronic records must be safeguarded through the following actions: Computer workstations should be secured at all times. Logoff the record when not in use Students are not allowed to print anything from the EMR Passwords should not be shared Access to electronic information should be limited to those who have a need to know the information Any breach or potential breach of patient information should be reported to the Director of HIM and Education

10 Risk Management Incidents and Events An Incident is any untoward event that has occurred outside the normal routine activities of the hospital. It may, or may not cause injury." Incidents may also involve patients, visitors, volunteers, and other people not employed by Florida Hospital Flagler. Report these events to your instructor and the Education department immediately. These happenings are reported by completing the electronic Risk Master Event Report found on the hospital Intranet

11 Risk Management Issues Follow hospital and school policies- our policies are found by clicking on the Internet Explorer Icon Do not step outside your scope of practice Florida statutes require any person who knows or has reasonable cause to suspect that a child, aged or disabled adult is abused, neglected or exploited shall immediately report such knowledge or suspicion to the Central Abuse Registry and Tracking System at ABUSE ( )

14 Fire Safety You should be aware of where the pull stations, fire extinguishers, smoke doors, and fire exits are located in your work area Never block pull stations, fire extinguishers, smoke doors, and fire exits with any type of equipment Know how to report a fire: Call ext 2222 & report Code Red and the location then pull the fire station closest to the fire and call out for help Use R.A.C.E (Remove/Rescue, Activate/Alarm, Close/Contain, Evacuate/Extinguish)

15 Fire Safety How to use a fire extinguisher: Remember to PASS: Pull the pin Aim at the base of the flame Squeeze the handle Sweep from side to side

16 Protecting ourselves and each other Wear your ID at all times Always try to walk with a group, rather than alone, to your vehicle (especially during darkness hours) Always look around when traveling to and from your car Report anything suspicious by dialing zero & asking for security Keep valuables out of sight when they are in your car. Either lock them in the trunk or place them under the seat of your car Bring limited items with you into the hospital- the safety of these can not be guaranteed

17 Electrical Safety Do not use any equipment you have not been trained to use Only use equipment that has the manufacturer's name, trademark, or a mark that identifies the organization responsible for the product All electrical equipment should have an sticker detailing the latest maintenance date. Do not use equipment that has an expired sticker and notify Clinical Engineering (Biomed) Do not use equipment that has a frayed cord or any other visible damage that may present a danger to you or a patient. Take it out of service and ask someone to enter a work order Red plugs and switches will work in the event of a power failure- plug all life-saving equipment into these outlets

18 Equipment Safety Per the FDA, any equipment that was involved in an illness, injury or death of a patient, student, or employee must be reviewed to see if it needs to be reported Sequester the equipment and notify Clinical Engineering, the supervisor & complete a Risk Master event report

19 Hazardous Materials At FHF, each department submits a list of chemicals used in their department annually Information about these chemicals (SDS Safety Data Sheets) is located on the hospital intranet under the I needto Access section Do not use chemicals that you are untrained to use Chemical, Radiological, Biological Hazards and Terrorism Plans are included in the Safety Manual on-line

20 Get Help! Proper Body Mechanics Stand close to object; feet apart Squat, bending at hips and knees Use leg muscles--not back No twisting--keep back straight; pivot Keep low back arched Push--don t pull Practice good posture

21 Standard Precautions If students are at risk of coming into contact with blood, body fluid, secretions, excretions (except sweat), non-intact skin, or mucous membranes, they should follow standard precautions and wear personal protective equipment (PPE). Stay away from icky stuff PPE includes: Gloves Masks Eye protection Face shields to protect workers mucous membranes Gowns or coats to protect workers skin and clothing from becoming soiled Shoe covers Hair covers

22 Guidelines for Students Follow Policies of Florida Hospital Flagler Follow dress code set by your college or ours-ask Education for more information Perform documentation per policy-ask your instructor or department for more information Perform procedures within your scope per instructions from your instructor or the department Stay in the department the majority of the time Report to instructor and/or staff member covering if you are leaving Maintain a professional attitude Stay home if you are ill Wash your hands often with soap and water or alcohol foam/gel to prevent the spread of germs

23 Student Parking Students are to park in employee lots only. Please do not park in the front spaces Green paint at parking space divider lines indicate employee parking Consider car pooling to save on gas and parking spaces Do not park in visitor parking
