6 Time Reporting All nursing and allied areas utilize a group sign-in in method, including per-diem and long-term assignments created by AMR ProNurse. Sign-in in binders are located on each unit, either in the report room or at the nursing station. Temporary employees are required to sign in and out and obtain NMH approval (signature) for all shifts worked. (Please note that all overtime and no lunch must have NMH approval prior to processing) The sheets will be collected weekly and faxed to our staffing partners by noon each Monday. 8 EMTALA The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act Assist anyone who needs help within NMH Campus Direct those needing emergency care to ER Not contingent on whether they can pay for services Must present services even if they initially refuse treatment Do the right thing 15 HIPAA Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 Information that Our Patients entrust to our Care Privacy & Confidentiality Should be practiced at all times This can include but not limited to.. 16
9 Proper disposal of patient information Use privacy screens, screensavers or Auto log-off Be careful with faxes, copiers, printers Privacy- Confidentiality- Security Do not look up information for you, your family, friends, or fellow workers Vendor visitation in patient care areas 17 Top 10 Privacy Concepts 1. Protected Health Information (PHI) Secure and restrict patient information to those who have a clinical relationship with the patient. 2. If it s not your job duty, do not view information even if it s your own. 3. Minimum necessary to perform job only view assigned patient information for clinical purposes Other information should not be viewed. 4. Provide Notice of Privacy Practices pamphlet 5. Patients can opt out of general directory No one will be able to access whether they are in the hospital at all; family members, florist, etc. 18
10 Top 10 Privacy Concepts 6. Restrict or amend records for patients Restrictions on who can view/ modify patient records can be made. 7. Complaints & questions Can be directed to Corporate Integrity Office or Patient Representative Department. 8. Proper disposal of sensitive information Use of shredder bins. Ensuring paperwork is not laid out in public view. 9. Incidental disclosures Protected health information that is unintentionally overheard or seen (elevator, nursing stations, registration desk, etc.). 10. 20 ID Badges ID Badges Wear and display your NM badge prominently this is a requirement. $100 fee if lost or damaged Visitor Badges (paper badges) Indicates date Indicates where they are to be - location Security officer may ask you to show your ID 39 General Access with ID Badge Access Control In place from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. If you cannot gain access to required areas, notify your coordinator/ manager Some departments require ID access General Access Level General Access Level Stairwells are locked except the first floor Must have ID to open Automatically becomes unlocked in the event of a fire or other alarm 40
21 Staying Safe Personal Safety & Crime Prevention If parking at NMH garage, take the shuttle during 2 nd / 3 rd shift Security at garage can escort you to car Secure your valuables/personal property Bomb/ violence threats should be reported immediately to Security s main number or emergency number Alert security of any suspicious activities Report any workplace violence or threats Emergency phones are also located throughout the campus. 41 Northwestern Medical Campus Emergency Phone Locations There are various campus phones located on various corners NMH NU VA These red boxes will call security directly 42
22 Telephone Numbers Security Services Emergency Number Dr. Fairbanks - code word used when in a dangerous situation. Call number, mention code, and state your location (building name, floor, room number) Non-Emergency: Lost and Found, lock outs, battery jumps, escort services, etc. Numbers are also on the back of your badge 43 Infection Control 44
23 Infection Control Employee Safety Standard Precautions Sharps Safety Tuberculosis Prevention 45 Employee Safety Obtain up-to to-date vaccinations Dispose of materials properly NO EATING/DRINKING in nursing or patient care areas Wear proper protective equipment when handling patients and when signs are posted 46
24 Standard Precautions is a management program used to prevent transmission of blood-borne borne pathogens in the healthcare environment. Assume everyone is contaminated, and assist them without endangering your own health 47 Standard Precautions Used at NMH Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and attire procedures/ policies Wash hands for at least 15 seconds Hepatitis vaccine is available at no cost at NMH Engineering controls are provided Bio-hazardous waste management Sharps management procedure No artificial nails permissible in patient areas 48
25 Common Myths Wearing gloves will prevent contamination and there is no need to wash your hands It is OK to apply lip balm or personal items near the nurses stations since it is away from the patients As long as you re not in the patient areas, you can wear what you want 49 Standard Precautions - PPE Gloves Masks Goggles And Face Shields Gowns And Aprons Head Covers Shoe Covers CPR Pocket Masks Proper use of these will be provided on your unit orientation 50
26 Standard Precautions Attire No open-toed shoes allowed No sleeveless tops without a lab coat or jacket throughout the hospital Socks/hose must be worn at all times Hospital scrubs must be covered when leaving the work area Jewelry is allowed if it does not interfere with safety of self or patients 51 Sharps Management Sharps containers are located in every patient room Dispose of all sharps in the container till ¾ full Call Bio-Engineering if container needs replacement Place only sharps in the container Never recap, bend or break sharps!!! 52
27 Biohazardous Waste Management Bio-hazardous waste is any disposable item that is visibly contaminated with blood or other regulated body fluids Bio-hazardous waste is segregated at the point of use Containers are in every patient room These are considered red bag waste 53 Soiled Linens Use only foot-operated operated covered laundry receptacles provided by the hospital Place only laundry in the containers Double tie bags before sending down the chute All soiled linen is treated the same, no isolation linen is used 54
28 Accidental Exposure Wash the affected area with soap and water Rinse eye with copious amounts of water or use eyewash Notify your supervisor Call Corporate Health (6-8282) *Any emergency during 7-5pm: 7 Go to Corporate Health. *After hours: go to ER 55 TB Control Program Identify cases early Negative airflow rooms Pulls air in towards the room Masks may be required Follow policies and procedures Annual testing is required Color Coded Alerts: Take note of visual signage TB is always BLUE 56
