2 2/7 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT Dr. Jacquelyn Fisher at Texas Children s Hospital in Houston, TX. Dr. Fisher, is working on a fabulous project on Human Trafficking, with the help of Doctors for Change. Who s Who District Coordinator & Assistant District Coordinator Some of the fine work that Dr. Fisher has either pioneered or was a part of consists of developing an educational course aimed to provide information to healthcare providers and spread awareness of human trafficking to the medical community. The course focuses on presenting the local statistics (Houston is a major hub for human trafficking world wide), providing the definition of trafficking, a brief understanding of the psychology of how and why people become victims, how victims may present in a clinical encounter, and how we as providers can intervene and provide resources for survivor restoration. Within the course, they advocate for providers to call the National Human Trafficking Hotline Number. Dr. Fisher have been giving these presentations, along with case study discussions, around the medical center with very positive responses. They are collecting pre and post educational data to try to validate the course. As a result of giving the presentation to the Baylor pediatric residents, one victim was identified within 1 week and referred to appropriate services! Dr. Fisher and her fellow residents are working on giving the course to residents in all specialties across the Texas Medical Center. Shana Godfred Cato, DO Baylor Scott and White Hospital/ Peds District VII Coordinator *Please let me know what you are doing at your program! sgodfredcato@sw.org FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY Global Pediatric Fellowship in Health Service Delivery Boston Children s Hospital is now accepting applications for their Global Pediatric Fellowship in Health Service Delivery for July 2015, with potential field placement with their collaborating partners in Rwanda and Haiti (Partners In Health) or with an affiliated partner in Liberia. The fellowship aims to provide training in clinical care in low resource settings as well as in the training, development, management and evaluation of programs and projects aimed to improve child health in low resource settings. For more information visit their website at If you have questions about this opportunity, please contact Tony Tran. Deadline: October 10, Lauren Gambill, MD UT Southwestern Austin/ Peds District VII Assistant Coordinator
3 3/7 Let s PAVE the way! By: Shana Godfred-Cato, DO, Ashley Lucke, MD, and Lisa Costello, MD, PAVE Tri-chairs Please send updates on on what your program is doing to PAVE the way to firearm injury prevention. Some programs are involved in quality improvement projects within their continuity clinics by handing out information on firearm safety. Others have increased their firearm injury prevention counseling of parents during well child visits. There is a large variety of program projects out there and we would light to turn the spotlight to your program! Baylor Scott & White is holding a program in local schools called poetry for prevention. Residents and medical students are going to local schools to educate students of all ages on how to improve safety with firearms in their homes and lives. The students then create a piece of poetry or artwork to reflect their feelings and desires for firearm safety. Shana Godfred Cato, DO Scott and White Hospital/Med Peds District VII Coordinator More information about P.A.V.E. Residents Needed to Participate in Community Water Fluoridation Initiative In April 2013, the U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, MD officially endorsed community water fluoridation as one of the most effective choices communities can make to prevent health problems while actually improving the oral health of their citizens. The Pew Children's Dental Campaign is working with staff in the Division of State Government Affairs and Division of Pediatric Practice to defend community water fluoridation in various areas of the country. Residents interested in participating in this initiative should contact Lauren Barone at LBarone@aap.org. Opportunities to write blog posts on the topic as well as engage in social content marketing strategies will be available! Tell us about oral health in your residency program Does your program offer fluoride varnish in your continuity clinic? Do you have opportunities to work with your local pediatric dentists in your community? Do your residents go into schools to work with dentists to provide care to kids? If so, tell us about it! We know there is a lot going on at your programs that other residents would like to read about. Let us know how your residency program is providing oral health services in your community.
