1 Standards and Procedures for Student Supervision and Safety Packet
2 To ensure the staff understands their responsibilities for providing children with a safe and secure environment.
3 To ensure active supervision is implemented as an essential element for creating childcare environments that are safe and secure.
4 SAISD must ensure that children are actively supervised according to the children s age and stage of development. Our learning environments are designed and arranged so that they are conducive to being easily supervised, while respecting the increasing independence and abilities of children.

6 All staff must be made aware of Program procedures regarding adequate and responsible supervision of children. All staff must be trained annually. The Principal/Directors must at all times make sure adequate staff is available for the supervision of children.

9 Planning for supervision of indoor and outdoor areas must be shared with regular and relief staff. Plan for safety transitions. Plan for student pick-up (sign-in & sign-out) Staff follow campus procedures for releasing children and ensures they are released only to authorized people.
10 Staff must consider implications for supervision during any changes to the physical environment of the campus. Where the design of buildings and grounds make effective supervision difficult, a plan (covering both the short and long term) must be developed for supervising children while facilities are being corrected.

12 Children are supervised at all times by two staff members. All children are within sight and/or hearing of all staff at all times. Children are not to be left unattended at any time. Staff effectively supervises all areas accessible to children. Children are supervised while sleeping. Children are always attended when they are eating or drinking. Volunteers are never to supervise children alone, indoors or outdoors.
13 Staff are aware that they must at all times remain readily accessible to students. Staffing arrangements are to be flexible enough to allow supervision of individuals or small groups of children. Staff ensures that the health and safety are not compromised by the age ranges in groups. Staff communicates effectively about supervision of children. Volunteers are at all times within the visibility of other staff while with the children. Staff members are not to be engaged in any other activities such as cleaning, preparation, administration, etc. while supervising children to ensure an interactive process of supervision.
14 Supervising staff will give their full attention to the children in their care and not to any other duties. When children are resting or sleeping, supervision is provided for the entire sleep period. During hand washing and/or toileting times, children will be supervised in the bathroom area. Children undergoing toilet training (if required) will not be left unsupervised in the bathroom.
15 No child is to be left unattended at the table during meal times. All students will be supervised for all transition activities during the day (example: moving from one room to another or one activity to another).
16 Two staff members must be present for supervision purposes. Staff supervising outdoors should be positioned to see as much of the play areas as possible. One staff member should be positioned close to the playground equipment. Staff must monitor gates and ensure that they are closed and secured properly (stand by gates if necessary).
17 Except for necessary discussions or concerns regarding children, staff must not congregate together outside. Staff members must spread out in the yard to ensure adequate supervision of all areas. Students must be supervised during all transitions indoor/outdoor.

19 Principals/Directors are responsible for insuring safe environment (Classroom, Hallway, Outdoors). Teachers are responsible for daily monitoring (Plugs, Wires, Ratio, Chemicals, Personal Items, Proper storage Also, see Teacher Classroom Checklist located in the Emergency Health & Safety Flip Chart. Custodians are responsible for the maintenance of both indoor and outdoor environments (Classrooms, Bathrooms, Playground/Outdoor Areas). Monitoring must be performed daily
20 Head Start Central Office Staff must monitor for safety on the campus during visits and assist with any corrections that may be needed.
21 Staff regularly evaluates and documents the effects of their supervisory practices and adjusts their approach accordingly. Director/Principal evaluates supervision on an ongoing basis and completes a supervision audit as needed.
22 Each Campus is required to collect the following documentation by October 26, 2012: 1. Agenda of Training 2. Staff Attendance (Sign-in Sheets) 3. Individual Signed Head Start Standards of Conduct document (Each Staff Person). All documents must be turned into the main office for pick-up by October 26, Please attention the packet to: Dr. Kampol at SAISD Head Start A certificate of completion will be sent out after the training has been completed.
