1 Volume XIII Number 4 Online Edition 10 ELEANOR HOBBS, PH.D., ANP, Editor MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The end of the year is fast approaching and as we look back, we can reflect on how much we have accomplished. We made progress towards eliminating mandatory collaborative practice. We gained support from many of our elected officials, as well as increased individual support from our physician colleagues. We are all preparing to help meet the needs of the new wave of insured individuals. The state campaign to increase membership has been successful. We all know that there is strength in numbers. With the increase in our numbers, we are a more powerful group. I encourage you all to stay active and encourage your non-member colleagues to joins us. It has been a pleasure and an honor to be your President the past year and I wish all of you Happy Holidays and a Healthy New Year. I want to extend my personal thank you to all the members of the Board of Directors who work tirelessly for this organization. Their dedication and commitment is admirable and has been invaluable in promoting our profession. In addition, to all our members who were victims of super storm sandy a special wish for a better new year. Patricia A. Sullivan, President Community Service CommitteE As the year ends, we are once again grateful for the generosity of our members. In October, Community Service members completed the Walk for Beauty to benefit Breast and Prostate Cancer. We collected 50/50 money along with personal donations. All together $ was donated by you, our members. In November, the dinner meeting was cancelled due to Super storm Sandy. A $ donation was sent to Long Island Cares from the NPA LI. At the December dinner meeting, we collected for Toys for Tots. My car was completely filled with the toys that you all donated. Our next Community Service Committee meeting is planned for January 14, We would love to have new members join us. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Debbie at or Liz at Elizabeth Kollar & Debbie Deierlein Scholarship committee Due to Hurricane Sandy, the Scholarship Committee meeting scheduled to review SNP and DNP candidates was postponed until early January. Unfortunately, since the names are anonymous until we convene, I could not contact the candidates individually. NPALI did send out a blast message to that effect. This change will not affect the Spring applications. As always, feel free to contact me at rosemcassidy307@gmail.com or refer to our Website. Have a Happy New Year! Rose Cassidy - Scholarship Chair
2 Legislative Issues Committee The New York State Legislature is not in session at this time. The results of the election are in. It seems that while the Democrats will hold a slim majority after some very astute maneuvering by Senator Dean Skelos the Republicans will share control of the Senate with the Democrats. Five Democrats have chosen to caucus with the Republicans. Skelos will alternate with the Democrats every three weeks as Majority Leader. Both the Democrats and Republicans will now be allowed to introduce legislation. This arrangement should prove very interesting and it is hoped that The NPA will be able to capitalize on this situation and bring our NP Modernization Act to the floor for a vote. How this will all play out remains to be seen. Our NP Modernization Act came very close to being sent to the floor for a vote. We are hoping that this will be the year Mandatory Collaboration ends and we are waiting for direction from The NPA New York State. The new legislative session due to begin in January 2013 is the beginning of the two (2) year cycle and all bills will have to be reintroduced and receive new bill numbers. Mary Beth Koslap-Petraco Legislative Issues Chair Public Relations We have had an exciting fall between the Sandy super-storm and then the snow. I was scheduled to make NPA PR presentations at several events this fall but unfortunately these all had to be cancelled due to the storm aftermath. So, we will just carry them over into 2013 and work to keep up the momentum. Those of you who were at the December meeting were privy to the presentations in honor of NP week, which were delayed due to the storms. We received a NYS Assembly Citation in honor of NP s, presented by Tom McKevitt who is one of our NYS assemblymen; and then a Nassau County Legislature Citation in honor of NP week, by Norma Gonsalves who is the Presiding Officer of the Nassau County Legislature. Both presenters offered very supportive commentary on NP s, our role in health care, and our positive and significant impact on the populace of Long Island. They spoke to our expanding and critical role in patient care in relation to the Affordable Care Act implementations. It is critical that we as NP s, and our associations, foster positive relationships with our politicians, and garner their support for our efforts and our pending legislative bills. To this end, please take a few minutes to respond to the action requests from the NPA-NYS when you receive their s. December 4th, 2012, NPALI meeting Citation presentations. (left to right) Susan Marks, ANP-C, NPALI-Public Relations, chairperson; Tom McKevitt, NYS Assemblyman-LI District 17; Norma Gonsalves, Presiding Officer-Nassau County Legislature; Pat Sullivan, FNP-C, NPALI-President. Please also take every opportunity to educate and inform others regarding the role and functionality of the NP. Many people still do not know who and what we are, what we can do, and how we can play an active role in their, and their families health care. 3 Program Committee Please mark your Calendars with the date for Practice Issues It is Friday, April 5, You will earn 6.5 AANP contact hours, which includes 4.5 pharmacology contact hours. Registration flyers will be in the mailboxes of all current NPALI members the first week of January Registration will only be accepted from current NPALI members prior to March 1, If there is still availability after March 1, 2013, we will open registration to nonmembers. For the past three years, the conference has sold out in about six (6) weeks, so do not delay registering if you plan on attending. In addition, there are considerable savings to you if you register before March 1, If you have not received your flyer by mid-january, it probably means your membership has expired. The November dinner meeting on Women and Heart Disease was cancelled due to the hurricane, and will be rescheduled for March As soon as I have a confirmation from the speaker, I will release the exact date. The program was at capacity, so I do not plan to re-open registration unless I have an unusual amount of cancellations. If you already registered and paid for the November 8, 2013 program, you are automatically registered for the March event, and will receive a new confirmation from me well in advance of the new date. I do appreciate that you let us hold-on to your registration fee, I just cannot imagine having to go through the refund and re-registration process so close to the April conference. The December 4, 2012, dinner meeting Dermatology 101 was a great success. NPALI member Danielle Well gave a great talk, and she had some excellent slides that really enhanced our learning. We earned 1.0 AANP contact hour for this event. I am working on the 2013 dinner meeting schedule now, so look to the NPALI web site for updates early I am always open to suggestions for new topics and new venues. If you know of any sponsors for dinner meetings, or for the annual conference please refer them to me. Feel free to me at debrachalmers@nyc.rr.com Awards Committee Laura Giardino was awarded the 2012 Nurse Practitioner of the Year Award on October 3, 2012 at the Annual Award Dinner held at Carlyle at Stonebridge, Smithtown, NY. Fifty attendees were present including Laura s family and co-workers from the Suffolk County Department of Health. Dr. Tomarken, Commissioner of Suffolk Department of Health, presented Laura with a proclamation. Additional proclamations were received by Senator Schumer and Town Supervisor, Patrick Vecchio. Assemblyman Fitzpatrick attended for a visit with members and to congratulate Laura. 5 REGIONAL DIRECTOR S REPORT Dear Colleagues, I hope that all of you made it through Hurricane Sandy in one piece. I know many of you suffered great loss and are still in the throes of recovery. As a gesture of goodwill, The NPA created a program called NPA Cares which solicited donations from members to create a relief fund. We raised a total of $6795, and The NPA, matched that amount. A check for $13,590 was donated to the American Red Cross to help those affected by the storm. Thank you to all of you who donated to this cause. It is a great way for Nurse Practitioners to help our own. The NPA Annual Conference Awards Ceremony 10/19/12. The NPA s Nurse Practitioner of the Year award: Left to right are: Dr. Mary Beth Koslop-Petraco, Dr. Rebecca Rigolosi, NPA Chair, Christina Drago, NPA Student NP of the Year recipient. As this article goes to press, The NPA s Legislative Agenda for 2013 is being finalized. We anticipate that our legislative priorities will remain the same and will be pursuing removal of statutory collaboration. Of note, this year The NPA is resurrecting Lobby Day in Albany. For some of you who have been part of this organization for a while, you may remember that Lobby Day was an annual event and sort of a rite of passage for many Nurse Practitioner students. I know that I cut my teeth on the legislative process when I first joined this organization by attending Lobby Day with some of my classmates and instructors. Please mark your calendars for Tuesday April 9, More details about Lobby Day to follow in the upcoming weeks. Also of note, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and the American College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP) are joining forces and as of January 1, 2013, will merge into one organization. This new entity will be called, The American Association of Nurse Practitioners, and will represent the interests of Nurse Practitioners on the national level. For more details of this merger, you can visit the AANP website ( The NPA of NYS held its annual conference at the Saratoga Hilton and City Center in Saratoga Springs NY from October 16, 2012 until October 21, It was a very successful conference with over 500 registrants in attendance. One of the conference highlights for me was presenting The NPA of New York State s Nurse Practitioner of the Year Award to our own Dr. Mary Beth Koslop-Petraco. Many of you know Mary Beth; so, I am sure it comes as no surprise that she received this very distinguished honor. On hand were many NPALI members to help celebrate Mary Beth s award, which made the event extra special. Congratulations again to Mary Beth! On a personal note, I would like to thank all of you who have supported me in my role as the Regional Director for Long Island over the past years. I am stepping away from this position to assume the role as President of The NPA of NYS beginning January 1, Replacing me as Regional Director will be Peg O Donnell, former Past President of the NPALI, who I am confident will do a terrific job. It has been a pleasure to serve you and I hope to continue to do good works in my new title. I wish you all and your families a very happy and healthy holiday season. See you all next year! Respectfully submitted, Jeanne Martin NPA Regional Director, Region #7 (Long Island) 5
6 President elect It is hard to believe that 2012 is nearing an end! Where did the time go? This year has been a learning year for me. In October, I went to the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Regions 2 and 3 Leadership meeting in Philadelphia, PA. Regions 2 and 3 include New Jersey, New York, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Virginia, and West Virginia. I can tell you the number one priority of these states is to get rid of mandatory collaboration. This year, New York came close to eliminating mandatory collaboration. Next year will be our year! We all have to do our part in contacting our State representatives to get their support. I hope you will consider going to Albany on April 9, 2013 for Lobby Day. The more Nurse Practitioners we have going, the stronger the impact we will have! I wish you all a joyous holiday season and good health and happiness in the New Year!
