3 Our Journey 1/05 - As part of the VON QI collaborative, we were challenged to actively involve families as part of QI teams VON team identified staff champion and recruited parent graduate advocate 4/05 - staff champion and parent attended Institute For Family-Centered Care (now IPFCC) 3-day conference Journey Continues Invited Parents to Focus Group and Developed a Parent Satisfaction Survey 4/05 Parent Advocate hired as part time, paid FAC Coordinator 4/05 Held first organized FAC Meeting FAC developed Purpose and Mission Statement Began scheduling monthly FAC meetings yearly (continues today) April 5,

4 The FAC & What we did next Originally composed of past NICU graduate parents, FAC coordinator, Staff coordinator/qi Coordinator, Social Worker & Lactation Consultant FAC drafted & prioritized list of potential improvement ideas Improvement themes: -family space (rest, eat, classroom, lockers..) -resources (books, computer..) -access to information (handouts, newsletters..) -support (peer to peer, Pizza Night, NICU 101..) -education (parent handbook, intro video..) Additional Accomplishments / Involvement FAC representation on NICU team: at least one parent attends each QI collaborative meeting as active team member and FAC coordinator attends multidisciplinary rounds and nurse council meetings Policy Input & Development: family presence guidelines (parents, siblings, designated others), banked human milk, hand hygiene... Developed Educational Materials for Parents: (sensory development pamphlet for small baby room, sibling guide..) April 5,

5 Sustaining a FAC In a word: FLEXIBILITY Can work on some initiatives from home or be involved on less frequent basis (i.e. Nurses Week) Have conference line available to call into monthly meetings Always be recruiting - Continuously collect names of potential new FAC members around discharge Nurture your FAC April 5,
