All drafts and pre-writing are to be completed on loose leaf paper, final copy of the essay must be word processed. (25 marks) Topics: 1. Courage In Elizabeth Alder s novel The King s Shadow, one of the main characters, Harold Godwinson, defined courage as knowing that what you do is necessary (254). Do you believe Parvana from Deborah Ellis s Parvana s Journey would agree with this definition? When does Parvana act courageously, and how are these acts of bravery necessary? What events challenge or force her to display courage? Supporting Evidence: Provide at least two examples of courageous behavior on Parvana s part. Commentary: Explain whether or not each act is necessary, then argue whether or not the behavior is courageous. Can an unnecessary act still be courageous? Why? 2. Maturity Parvana s Journey is largely a coming-of-age novel about the main character, Parvana. In other words, it is about how she grows from a carefree child into an increasingly aware, responsible adolescent/ young adult. Explain how Parvana matures in her thinking and in her actions as she struggles to meet the challenges presented to her throughout the novel. Supporting Evidence: First provide an example of Parvana s immaturity, and then provide at least one contrasting example from the novel that shows how she has matured regarding that particular task, relationship or thinking. Commentary: Explain how the first example displays immaturity, then discuss the transformation Parvana goes through in order to behave in a more mature fashion. What has brought about this change? You can also use examples from The Breadwinner to demonstrate Parvana s maturity. 14
