3 Types of Reading Interaction The reader will interact on different levels with the text as they comprehend the meaning of the text. Initial Understanding: The reader will demonstrate basic understandings of the text s general content. Determine the central idea or theme within a written work; Identify or infer important characters, settings, problems, events, relationships, and details within a written work; Select and use relevant information from a written work in order to summarize; and Use context clues to determine meanings of unknown or multiple meaning words or figurative language. 5 Demonstrating a Critical Stance: The reader will elaborate on the text and make judgments about the text s quality and themes. Use information from the text to make a prediction based on what is read; Analyze the author s craft, including use of literary devices; Evaluate explicit and implicit information within a written work to include in a response to or extension of the work; and Demonstrate an awareness of values, customs, ethics and beliefs included in a written work. 4

7 Processes of Writing Writing is a process that includes a prewriting phase where ideas are generated, A composing and revising phase where ideas are refined and elements of presentation are considered, And a proofreading phase where the presentation is adjusted in order to conform to standard written English. 6
8 Generating Ideas (Prewriting) Requires the writer to select and limit topics, Draw upon their own knowledge, as well as other sources, Set purposes, And define his or her own audience. 7
9 Developing Ideas and Clarifying Ideas (Composing/Revising) Requires the writer to develop, clarify, organize, and support ideas; The Multiple Step Process format of writing exercises allows ideas to develop clearly. To rethink his or her writing; To make changes to improve content and form. 8
10 Proofreading Requires the writer to assess a piece of writing in terms of accepted standards for paragraphing, sentence structure, and the mechanics of written English. 9
