We could ot do what we do without our compassioate voluteers, doors, parters ad employees who work diligetly day after day ad year after year to brig lifesavig services to millios of people i eed. We are so grateful for your support. Whether istallig smoke alarms i vulerable commuities, respodig to historic floodig i Louisiaa ad West Virgiia or deliverig food ad relief items i the aftermath of destructive evets like Hurricae Matthew, i Fiscal Year 2017, Red Crossers were there to provide safety shelter hugs ad hope for tomorrow. While this report focuses o last fiscal year, FY 2018 has already brought uprecedeted disasters with the Red Cross lauchig wide-ragig relief operatios to three back-to-back, historic hurricaes (Harvey, Irma ad Maria) that severely impacted Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgi Islads ad beyod. Iteratioally, last year the America Red Cross helped respod to disasters ad crises, icludig Hurricae Matthew i Haiti, devastatig floodig i Peru ad Keya, ad the ogoig global migratio crisis. We also cotiued a umber of vital disaster preparedess ad disease prevetio iitiatives, icludig lauchig successful measles ad rubella vacciatio campaigs i Bei, Burudi, the Democratic Republic of Cogo, Malawi ad Zambia. I am proud to report that workig with our parters i the Measles & Rubella Iitiative, we estimate we have saved approximately 20.4 millio lives through vacciatios sice This year, as it has for the last 136 years, the Red Cross cotiued its oldest missio, providig comfort ad care to our courageous me ad wome i uiform by deliverig more tha 420,000 emergecy commuicatios ad offerig critical commuity services to members of the military, veteras, ad their families. The Red Cross also processed millios of blood products to meet the eeds of patiets sufferig a rage of coditios from trauma to cacer. We also taught millios of people vital health ad safety skills, like CPR, first aid ad water safety, all i a effort to esure people are prepared ad kow what to do whe cofroted with a emergecy. It is my hoor to serve as Chairma of this great istitutio ad o behalf of the people we serve, thak you. Your geerosity ad compassio represet the very best of our humaitaria spirit. As I write this letter, my heart is filled with gratitude for the dedicated voluteers, doors ad commuity parters who empower the humaitaria missio of the America Red Cross each ad every day. I Fiscal Year 2017 (July 1, 2016 Jue 30, 2017), these compassioate me ad wome respoded to 64,000 disasters, doated early 4.7 millio uits of blood, traied millios of Americas i vital health ad safety skills, delivered comfort ad care to our military members ad veteras ad assisted our eighbors abroad with critical disaster respose ad disease prevetio iitiatives. This past year, I visited a umber of places impacted by disaster icludig Louisiaa after last summer s terrible floodig ad the Carolias after Hurricae Matthew brought destructive coditios ad floodig to much of our atio s Easter Seaboard. More recetly, I ve traveled to Texas, Florida ad Puerto Rico as part of the massive Red Cross respose to Hurricaes Harvey, Irma ad Maria. While I will ever get used to lookig i the eyes of someoe who just lost everythig they re both frighteed ad icredibly brave at the same time I retured from each of my visits ispired by the tremedous resiliecy ad geerosity I witessed. I also retured more grateful tha ever for our remarkable Red Crossers who work aroud the clock to provide food, shelter, comfort ad hope to those facig great eed. I additio to our resposes to large-scale disasters, the Red Cross cotiued to build mometum for our lifesavig Home Fire Campaig i FY 2017, istallig more tha 472,000 free smoke alarms i homes across the coutry. Similarly, our Aquatics Ceteial Campaig cotiued its icredibly positive impact, resultig i more tha 1,000 lifeguards ad swim istructors as well as 900 juior lifeguards who received traiig ad certificatio i 88 commuities throughout the U.S. The past fiscal year also saw the Red Cross cotiue its tireless work to esure a safe ad reliable blood supply for patiets i eed, as well as the ogoig growth of our Service to the Armed Forces missio icludig the additio of a Military Vetera Caregiver Network to help our atio s 5.5 millio military ad vetera caregivers meet the uique challeges they face. Ad, workig with our parters i the Measles & Rubella Iitiative, we also helped vacciate millios of at-risk childre aroud the world. Of course, everythig we do is oly possible because of the support ad geerosity of dedicated idividuals, like you. 3 Fightig for Home Fire Safety Each year, the America Red Cross respods to tes of thousads of disasters. Major evets like hurricaes or floods make headlies across the coutry while home fires the most commo disaster ofte garer less visibility, but that does t make them ay less devastatig or deadly. More tha 90 percet of the disasters to which the Red Cross respods are home fires. They ca happe to ayoe at ay time. O a typical day, a average of 7 people die ad 36 more suffer ijuries due to home fires. The Red Cross Home Fire Campaig aims to chage that. With geerous support from doors, Red Cross voluteers ad parters cavas eighborhoods to test ad replace smoke alarms for free ad educate families o fire prevetio ad safety. Oe such voluteer visit i April 2015 made all the differece for a family livig i Orage, New Jersey. Just before 5:00 a.m. o November 8, 2016, Madeleie Milord ad her brother Claude were awakeed by the soud of a smoke alarm. We heard the beep, beep, beep of the smoke alarm, said Claude. The house felt warm, ad I could smell smoke, but we saw o smoke or fire. Makig his way dowstairs, Claude opeed the basemet door, releasig a plume of smoke. It s i the basemet, he yelled as he ad Madeleie raced through the house wakig up loved oes. Thaks to the Campaig, all 17 family members ad a overight guest made it out safely. Afterwards, the Red Cross provided the Milords with emergecy assistace icludig temporary lodgig, food ad clothig. Their relatioship cotiued all the way through to the istallatio of smoke alarms i the Milords ew home. I Fiscal Year 2017, more tha 472,000 smoke alarms were istalled i homes across the coutry. This put the Campaig o track for a major milestoe 1 millio istallatios i FY 2018 (reached i October 2017). Durig the Louisiaa flood respose i fall 2016, for example, RC View was key to helpig idetify those most 4 severely affected. Voluteers from Islamic Relief USA assisted Red Cross by completig damage assessmets ad uploadig iformatio to the system i real time, eablig respoders to visualize flood-affected areas ad idetify areas i eed of services. This data was also itegrated ito the case maagemet system, providig the verificatios ecessary for fiacial assistace services. It was further utilized by parterig commuity orgaizatios to help coordiate service plaig ad delivery. Measles & Rubella Iitiative Workig to Eradicate Measles As a foudig parter of the Measles & Rubella Iitiative, the America Red Cross plays a pivotal role i worldwide vacciatio campaigs. I fall 2016, America Red Cross worker Jeelle Eli spet a moth aboard the Respoder a ship operated by the Red Cross Red Crescet etwork ad Migrat Offshore Aid Statio with teams whose purpose is to rescue ad care for migrats i dager of drowig. O October 2, Eli s day bega before surise whe a woode boat carryig 31 people was spotted i the distace. It was the first sightig of the day but ot the last. Before ightfall, the team cared for 324 people they d rescued from overcrowded boats crossig the Mediterraea Sea. Ragig i age from 2 to 70 years old, the migrats had o chace of makig it to lad o their useaworthy rafts ad boats. Safe aboard the Respoder, the Red Cross Red Crescet team provided emergecy medical care, food, water, blakets ad basic saitatio. Some wated to call loved oes, others were happy just to brush their teeth agai ad some shared their stories while Eli listeed. I did ot take this jourey for me. It s for her. The America Red Cross is the coutry s leadig provider of lifesavig blood products. At the age of 6, Liviya was rushed to the hospital. She was bleedig iterally ad eeded a immediate trasfusio of platelets to stop the bleedig ad save her life. Thaks to geerous voluteer doors, platelets the clottig portio of blood were available for Liviya. As doctors worked to treat her rare disease, aplastic aemia, Liviya received almost daily trasfusios of blood ad platelets over a period of three moths to help keep her alive. Each day, the Red Cross holds early 500 blood drives. These blood drives would ot be possible without the commitmet of commuity orgaizatios that voluteer to serve as sposors or hosts, providig opportuities for blood doors to roll up a sleeve for patiets i eed. Type O egative blood ca be trasfused to patiets of ay blood type ad is what emergecy room persoel reach for whe there is o time to determie the blood type of patiets i the most serious situatios. I FY 2017, Delta collected early 9,400 doatios at its blood drives across the coutry, which is more tha 15 percet growth over the previous year. 9 Teachig Water Competecy Celebratig 100 years of water safety i 2014, the America Red Cross lauched the Aquatics Ceteial Campaig to create a ecosystem of water safety i commuities where the drowig rates or umbers of drowigs were higher tha the atioal average. Four years ito the five-year effort, the Campaig has surpassed its origial goal of providig 50,000 sets of swim lessos i at-risk commuities. Through 204 facilities, more tha 52,000 sets of swim lessos well over 400,000 idividual lessos were coducted i 88 commuities across 17 states as Fiscal Year 2017 wrapped up. If the Ceteial Campaig did ot exist, we would struggle, says Ree Foteot, Aquatics Director for Ward 3 Recreatio i Lake Charles, Louisiaa. We would ot have water competecy for most of our commuity which is where we were ad have bee for as log as I ca remember. I Lake Charles, the Campaig is traiig lifeguards to teach swim lessos. These swim lessos equip childre ad adults with water safety kowledge ad skills that ca save their lives as well as others. We are goig to be able to see the beefits for the ext 10, 15, 20 years because we are settig the foudatio for years to come, says Kip Texada, Ward 3 Director of Recreatio. The effort also impacts studets directly. A scholarship provided by the Campaig, i coordiatio with the Chicago Park District, made it possible for Lakisha Booker to eroll her 11-year-old daughter, Aryeale Lee, i swim lessos at the Foster Park Pool. Booker lives with her daughter i Eglewood, a Chicago eighborhood, ad was referred to the facility while lookig for a safe ad fu place for Aryeale to play. The Campaig ad its emphasis o repeated swim lessos util reachig water competecy provided that ad more for Aryeale. She achieved a level of swimmig ability that opeed other activities ad opportuities to her. The skills developed from these lessos eared her a spot o the swim ad water polo teams, ad the latter wo a champioship touramet. Traiig Lifesavers Every year, millios of people lear lifesavig skills through the Red Cross. Rebecca Satella is oe of them. More tha 15 years ago, she took her iitial Red Cross First Aid ad CPR traiig class for a job as a daycare worker. Satella ejoyed the class ad cotiued traiig, became a Red Cross voluteer ad discovered a passio that led her to pursue her EMT certificatio. But Satella was t o duty as a EMT that day i July whe she pulled over i Hollad, Michiga, to save Betty DeWilde s life. She was just o her way to see her daughter, ad she witessed the car crash ad heard the driver s screams. Satella told a passerby to call 9-1-1, ad the wet to check o DeWilde. Whe she pulled back the deployed airbag, Satella saw boe ad blood the crash had early severed DeWilde s had. She kew she eeded to keep the driver calm ad stop the bleedig util paramedics could arrive. Speakig i a reassurig toe ad sedig a bystader after DeWilde s escaped dog helped take care of the first issue. The, she borrowed a belt to create a touriquet to address the secod issue cotrollig the bleedig. 10 Supportig Heroes The seed for the America Red Cross was plated o the battlefields of the Civil War with the compassioate care that fouder Clara Barto offered soldiers, regardless of side or rak. As such, servig ad developig ew ways to care for members of the U.S. military past ad preset as well as their families has remaied at the heart of the Red Cross missio. Today the Red Cross Hero Care Network provides emergecy commuicatio support ad referral services for military members i eed, icludig those o active duty, members of the Reserve or Natioal Guard, retirees, veteras ad family members. Ofte it meas otifyig a service member, like Joatha Ramey, about a emergecy back home. Shortly after Ramey, a Captai i the U.S. Army, was trasferred from Fort Huachuca i Arizoa to Joit Base Lewis-McChord i Washigto State, his father s health took a tur for the worse with a diagosis of ioperable cacer. Ramey s mother used the Hero Care Network to cotact her so, ad the commuicatio was routed through his chai of commad, esurig that Ramey was able to get home to sped quality time with his dyig father. Ramey believes that the professioalism of the Red Cross plays a key role, ad that this ca lead commaders to a better uderstadig of the eed.
