2 Torrance Memorial Earns Magnet Recognition Holiday Festival Holiday Festival Brings in $14.5 Million for New Patient Tower The 28th annual Holiday Festival raised a record $14.5 million toward construction of the hospital s new $450 million patient tower. More than 5,000 community members enjoyed the six-day event. At Friday evening s Gala Dinner Torrance Memorial announced the largest collective donation in the history of the hospital, a $13.5 million gift. Donald and Priscilla Hunt of Manhattan Beach provided a gift of $11.5 million as a thank you to the hospital for its dedication to caring for the community. In recognition of the gift, the Donald and Priscilla Hunt Cancer Institute and the Donald and Priscilla Hunt Nuclear Medicine Center will be named and housed within the new patient tower upon its completion in The hospital s 850-member volunteer group, the Auxiliary, announced a separate $1 million multiyear pledge, the largest gift from this group in its 60-year history. The gift will be allocated toward the Healing garden in the new main tower. Longtime hospital supporters Melanie and Richard Lundquist made a matching $1 million gift as honorary co-chairs of the $200 million main tower capital fundraising campaign in the hopes of inspiring the generosity of others. On the heels of these announcements, an additional $436,700 was raised through a live auction. Auction highlights included the heartwarming Gifts from the Heart opportunity for guest to come forward with donations starting at $1,000. As the excitement grew, Ralph and Sigrid Allman of Ranch Palos Verdes and the Graziadio Foundation each came forward with a donation of $100,000. Sam and Rose Feng of Manhattan Beach contributed $50,000. As a bonus to the week s festivities, Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc., donated a Lexus CT 200h as the Opportunity Drawing Grand Prize, with an estimated value of $35,000. Alfredo Robillos, the father of Lana Kubota from Health Information Management, purchased the winning raffle ticket. 2 The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has awarded Magnet Recognition to Torrance Memorial Medical Center, making it the first hospital in the South Bay to receive this designation which measures nursing care quality. ANCC delivered the news on Wednesday afternoon during a conference call in the West Tower lobby to a crowed fo several hundred Torrance Memorial employees wearing Magnet red shirts and waving pom poms. As a representative from ANCC broke the news to Peggy Berwald, R.N., senior vice president, Patient Services/CNO via speaker phone, the crowd burst into cheers and applause. A magnet hospital is a facility that has embarked on an extensive review oand systematic evaluation by ANCC. Magnet hospitals must meet stringent quantitative and qualitative standards that define the highest quality of nursing practice and patient care. During the conference call, Torrance Memorial was praised for its transformational leadership by the Chief of Nursing Officeer and its ability to influence change through its Shared Decision Making structure. It was also recognized for development of its quality care model. Torrance Memorial is one of only 26 hospitals to achieve the prestigious designation in the state and among 6 percent of hospitals worldwide. New White Boards in Patient Rooms Torrance Memorial will be installing new patient white boards in patient rooms. The boards will be used as a communication tool between the patient, family and care team. Information on the board will be updated by the nurse at the beginning of each shift and as needed based on updates to the patients plan of care. The admitting nurse will orient the patient and family on the white board and its use. On a daily basis the nurse will update and review the information on the board with the patient and/or patient designated primary family member. The information on the white board will be written in non-medical, easy to understand language and will include the current date and day, contact names and phone numbers of the care team, individualized focused plan of care including pain management, activity and diet, discharge goals and anticipated discharge date. All information will comply with HIPPA regulations and will not include the patients diagnosis, identifiers or sensitive health information. The patient has the right to refuse having their information displayed on the white board.
