3 Why? An increasing proportion of healthcare is provided in the community in integrated teams yet education and training is still mostly hospital focused and provided in professional silos The primary care workforce, in particular, has been poorly planned for and underinvested in Local resources and local needs are underrepresented in the current education and training pathway Health and social care training is done in isolation of each other There are currently too few community placements and insufficient capacity for delivering community training There is little local influence on the quality of education and training and how it is delivered Community based careers are sometimes seen as undesirable (e.g. limited career progression) The current skills mix within GP practices limits the services that can be delivered The current education model is overly reliant on the relationships between large academic institutions and acute provider trusts

6 Community Education Provider Networks - CEPN What is the big idea? A network of providers delivering training in the community Our future workforce benefits from high quality training delivered in the community We are stronger if we work together.

8 What is a CEPN An alternative to a large trust education provider A Network of Community Education Providers (GP Federations / Pharmacist / Care Homes etc.) Can take on education and workforce planning at scale Can bring in education funding into the community

13 CEPN Next steps Federations working in partnership with CCG Building network of practices and other providers Building relationships with HESL + NHSE Bidding for funding and a good deal (from HESL) to run more education in the community Supported by good workforce data this will support our bids for future funding

15 Opportunities CEPNs developing to support long term strategy Delivery of 5 year forward view and OHSEL priorities continue to examine local requirements to develop new roles within the community (e.g. Physician Associates) support service transformation by promoting culture and behavioural change interventions. support commissioning workforce development to deliver the OHSEL transformation programme (e.g. through Communities of Practice) support existing workforce development and engagement support the development of leadership and management at all levels
