3 Why? An increasing proportion of healthcare is provided in the community in integrated teams yet education and training is still mostly hospital focused and provided in professional silos The primary care workforce, in particular, has been poorly planned for and underinvested in Local resources and local needs are underrepresented in the current education and training pathway Health and social care training is done in isolation of each other There are currently too few community placements and insufficient capacity for delivering community training There is little local influence on the quality of education and training and how it is delivered Community based careers are sometimes seen as undesirable (e.g. limited career progression) The current skills mix within GP practices limits the services that can be delivered The current education model is overly reliant on the relationships between large academic institutions and acute provider trusts
