My daughter has, for the past three months, had some swallowing issues and I called Nurse Mechell every day asking her to please get word to Dr. Hunt. And she did. When my daughter was losing weight and aspirating, I called Nurse Mechell on it very quickly. She got us in immediately. When we got to the office, Dr. Hunt took one look at our daughter and said that it s best that she get the G-button procedure done. And also I can t forget to mention she called our DME company and just really listened to my concerns and fears, and helped ME stay strong through it all! 5 Don t mess with this sorceress, my sweet little dear, or this Halloween night, I ll make all of your candy disappear! That was my poem for our Halloween assembly in 3 rd grade- ahh, memories Halloween has long-since been my favorite holiday. My old neighborhood still has people coming from across town to hold out their plastic Jack-O-Lanterns and have a Snicker s dropped inside. For about four years in a row (during which my costumes included Jasmine, Mr. Peanut, a Hershey s Kiss, and a Treasure Troll Bride), my family even passed out cotton candy to trick-or-treaters. The Monster Mash can be heard blasting up and down the street, while kids run screaming through yards that are better decorated than the set of Hocus Pocus. While my dad continues to think it s hilarious to blow fog across the porch and have black lights light up a life-size Frankenstein, not all kids are going to find that quite so amusing and many may find Halloween night to be very scary. Before the big night, have a conversation with your children about what is real and what is not. Skeletons, costumes, and masks may all need explanations in order to make sense to your children. Especially young children may have difficulty understanding that brother hasn t really turned into Casper overnight. If children don t want to go trick-or-treating, no big deal! Have a movie night at home or let them be your helpers by passing out candy on the doorstep. If children want to dress up, let them pick out their own costumes so they feel comfortable (even if that superhero costume is the cutest thing you ve ever seen!) Lastly, try making up a code word with your children so they can tell you when they ve had enough fun for one night, but without worrying that their big sister will make fun of them for being scared. Lastly, Safe Kids Worldwide reports that on average, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year. Reflective tape, glow sticks, flashlights, close supervision, and hand-holding can all help keep your children safe. I hope your Halloween is SPOOKtacular! -Kate Jennings, L.P.C.
